Urban Organic New York Wedding at The McKittrick Hotel

February 26, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Kristin and Courtney’s wedding at The McKittrick Hotel was everything we love about stylish New York weddings and so much more. The couple had one goal in mind: “Above all, we wanted our wedding to feel like a love letter to New York City and to the incredible humans in our lives.” They chose one of their favorite places in the city, which offered a cozy rooftop ceremony and an intimate dinner-party style reception. The bride, who is an art therapist and self-proclaimed calligraphy enthusiast, and her groom created nearly every detail – from the hand-painted, personalized invitations to the signs and programs to the memory wall that included a photo of every guest. It was quite an artistic feat, and we’re so grateful Alyssa McElheny Photography was there to capture every special detail!

The Couple:

Kristin and Courtney

The Wedding:

The McKittrick Hotel, New York, New York

As a southern boy and a west coast girl who met abroad and moved to the Big Apple on a leap of faith, we hold our city close to our hearts not only for its vibrant culture, but as the place we fell in love and began our lives together. As so many of our closest friends and family had yet to visit NYC, we knew that we wanted to give them a glimpse into “our New York” by sharing with them the favorite local hangs and secrets spots that make this concrete jungle so very special to us.

This thought process guided our entire wedding weekend, from the rehearsal dinner at Freemans Restaurant, an old-world tavern hidden at the end of a graffiti-covered alley, to our “Meet and Greet” at the Brooklyn Art Library, home of the traveling Sketchbook Project (a unique crowd-funded sketchbook museum to which I had contributed shortly after meeting Courtney many years ago). There, out-of-town guests received a welcome bag full of NYC staples, including black & white cookies, mini-pretzels, subway-themed tokens, and guides to the city.

The ceremony turned out to be the most memorable part of the day! After spending most of our planning focused on making the experience special for our guests, I hadn’t expected that moment to be quite so meaningful. But standing on that rooftop surrounded by our favorite people, listening to our officiant surprise us with words of love and encouragement from family and friends, hearing Court’s beautiful (and hilarious) vows, sharing a champagne toast before walking back down the aisle, and watching the clouds part as the sun finally hit our faces for the first time that day… turns out, it was pretty darn magical.

While we wanted as many of our loved ones present, it was also important that the day maintain the intimate feel of a smaller wedding. Therefore, as an art therapist and calligraphy aficionado, I immediately gravitated towards DIY projects that would allow our guests to feel more connected to us and to the day. PHEW – This was truly a labor of love. Along with hand-making the signs, ceremony programs, menus and table numbers, we hand-painted EACH and every wedding invitation, to gift all of our loved ones with a little piece of art; we also hand-dyed and lettered the escort cards with brass stamped table numbers and iron skeleton keys as a tie-in to the “hotel” theme.

Our desire to connect our favorite people to our favorite places made the wedding venue an obvious choice. Built in the spirit of an abandoned 1930s hotel, the McKittrick is home to multiple restaurants, bars, and, most famously, to the interactive play Sleep No More. Best described as Macbeth-meets-Hitchcock, this immersive theater was our first truly unique New York experience. Since, we have returned time and again for cocktails at Gallow Green, their lush rooftop, dinner at the Heath, their prohibition-era restaurant, and dancing with the Heathens, their mind-blowing house band. When we discovered that they had begun offering wedding packages, we were ALL in (literally).

The décor was largely dictated by the vintage aesthetic of the venue with some bohemian touches woven through, like the Mission Fiber Art macramé ceremony backdrop created by a close friend. To offset the cost of the space, we organized much of the decorations ourselves by collecting amber bottles, brass candlesticks, cigar boxes, antique glass cases, and vintage postcards at flea markets and yard sales. Luckily, The McKittrick Hotel is hardly a blank canvas, and is abound with eclectic odds and ends of its own!

We included “anti-small talk” question cards written by one of our favorite authors, Chuck Klosterman, in the cigar boxes at each of the tables as quirky conversation starters. These were the same question cards that Court brought to our first date!

We created a “Memory Wall,” which included a Polaroid picture of a moment shared with each of our guests, along with a description of that memory. We asked that our friends and family “trade in a new memory for the old one” and provided Polaroid cameras and props at our DIY photo booth station. Although scouring through social media for photos took some time, it allowed us to truly reflect on the significance of their presence in our lives.

Breezy Cream and Beige Beach Wedding at Levyland Estates

February 26, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Tori and Niko’s dreamy California beach wedding at Levyland Estates has us longing for warmer weather, sand between our toes, and picturesque sunsets. The couple created a vintage boho vibe by setting up a teepee-inspired arch for the ceremony and using a mix of antique and handmade decor. The bride’s vintage-esque Sottero and Midgley lace dress was stunning, and we love how she wore her hair down for the beach ceremony and then wore it braided with a simple greenery crown for the reception. Photographer Jami Laree did an incredible job capturing every moment of Tori and Niko’s wedding, especially the fun couple portraits by the water!

The Couple:

Tori and Niko

The Wedding:

Levyland Estates, Carlsbad, California

My look was vintage bohemian. I love the ’50s and ’60s era fashion, and I love the laid back, eclectic nature of bohemian fashion, so I combined the two. I loved the lace sleeves on my dress the most. My accessories were simple. I borrowed earrings and a pendant necklace from my forever fabulous Aunt Peggy. She has been collecting beautiful jewelry for many years and she was gracious enough to let me borrow some diamonds for a day!

Processional – Niko composed an original song and played it on guitar
Recessional – “Got to Give It Up” by Marvin Gaye
First dance – “Till There Was You” by The Beatles

We had an authentic Mexican taco cart at our reception. Tacos are so close to our hearts!

Industrial Glam Maine Wedding at 58 Fore

February 25, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Kate and Luke had two main goals for their glam wedding at 58 Fore: to have a meaningful ceremony that broke tradition and was uniquely “them,” and to throw a killer party for their family and friends. When you see these photos by Abby Lorenz Photography, you’ll agree that they totally nailed it! Their ceremony was filled with loving advice from married couples whom they admire, a special song from the groom’s parents, and even a slight mishap with the rings that had everyone crying with laughter. With the help of expert planner Sarah Goodwin of Daisies and Pearls, they were able to cohesively tie together an industrial + glam + rustic vision with flea-market finds, DIY décor, and moody floral arrangements from Broadturn Farm. All in all, this is a great example of how to customize a space to fit your personal style(s)!

The Couple:

Kate and Luke

The Wedding:

58 Fore, Portland, Maine

We both strongly felt that having a meaningful ceremony was important. We wanted someone who knew us and understood us as a couple to marry us, so we asked Luke’s uncle to officiate. Instead of traditional readings, we asked three couples we admire — my brother and sister-in-law, Luke’s sister and brother-in-law, and the couple who introduced us — to offer advice and wisdom on marriage. Luke and I did not know what they were going to say beforehand, and it was amazing to take in how each couple was able to express their love and our love so eloquently. Luke’s parents sang “Perhaps Love” by John Denver, which was also their wedding song and a moment we’ll never forget.

One of the most memorable moments was when our officiant reached for my wedding band from Luke’s brother, and it slipped from their fingers. Our ceremony space was incredibly rustic, and there were large spaces between the floorboards. We thought for sure the ring was a goner, but instead of panic, Luke and I just started laughing. Soon, the whole room was laughing. Luckily, Luke’s brother had kept a careful eye on the ring and was miraculously able to recover it. We’ve since deemed the event the “ceremonial tossing of the rings.” We have no illusions that life will be perfect, and we loved that our wedding day embraced wonderfully imperfect instances such as this.

Luke and I had an unbelievable experience working with Abby Lorenz. It’s not only her stunning pictures that make her such an excellent photographer, but it’s also the manner in which she connects with people. She made us feel so comfortable and was able to sense what each of us needed in the moment. She took our great dance party photos by jumping in and dancing right along with the guests. Abby recognizes that a wedding is about more than just capturing the memories — it’s about living them. This outlook allowed us to enjoy and take in every second of our day.

The DIY details were some of our favorite décor from the day. My dad and I went to the Brimfield Flea Market and found distressed windows that we used to partition the lounge and reception area. My mother-in-law made all the signs on vintage window panes. She also wrapped pencils with pages from each of our graduate theses. Luke’s aunt hand-wrote the menus, also on vintage windows, and one of my bridesmaids hand-wrote all the place cards on agate slices. To display our signs, Luke’s uncle made stunningly crafted easels out of metal fence posts. We also constructed a wall made of vintage doors to hang our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos. We are so thankful to have had so many talented hands work together to make our day so beautiful and personal!

Our first piece of advice is to have fun with the process and work together. We stayed up late nights and listened to music, carefully selecting our wedding songs. We ordered food and watched movies while stuffing our invitations. We embraced each step and made it an experience. We also loved including our families in the planning. Our next piece of advice — trust your vendors! Luke and I were so lucky to have fantastic vendors who understood our hopes for the day. With Sarah Goodwin of Daisies and Pearls at the helm, we could not have asked for a better team to make our vision a reality.
