This Art Nouveau Bridal Inspiration Shoot at The Dorian is Styling Goals

March 30, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Beautiful things happen when designers stretch the bounds of creativity, like in this bridal shoot at The Dorian designed by Olea & Fig Studio. The glamorous hotel was the perfect backdrop for this shoot that blurred the line between the bold, sleek style of Art Decor and the naturalistic, ornamental design of Art Nouveau. The multidimensional floral arrangements created by Ash + OAK added a moody yet vibrant feel to the elegant gold and white table decor, and that same vibrance was echoed in the hand-painted turquoise cake from Butter&. The showstoppers of this entire shoot, though, were the brides’ BoLee Bridal Couture gowns, which embodied both design styles. This bridal shoot was packed with nuance, and Kindred Wedding Storytellers captured it all brilliantly.

While Art Deco has been quite a popular event design trend, we wanted to expand upon such well-known style of visual arts and integrate design components from a subsequent movement, Art Nouveau, a distinctive style that is often compared and discussed with Art Deco.

The Dorian in San Francisco provided the perfect setting that incorporated the retro opulence and extravagance for this photoshoot, and the rich teal color, gold accents and rich classic chocolate brown were the core colors. For floral and makeup, we applied a touch of that luscious and rich wine and burgundy to echo that lavish and glamorous overall feel. “While Art Deco features bold shapes like sunbursts and zigzags and broad curves, Art Nouveau focuses mainly on naturalistic elements in a stylized form.” The outfits selected showcased geometric design embodying Art Deco and more intricate and organic design implied Art Nouveau.

The Rengstorff House Set the Scene for This Modern Victorian Wedding

March 30, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Victorian weddings are all about refined elegance and grace, which made the stately mansion and sprawling gardens at The Rengstorff House the perfect setting for Ebony and Rafael’s Victorian-inspired celebration. Plan My Wedding Please helped the couple bring modern and romantic vibes together in perfect harmony with an outdoor ceremony that relied mostly on the natural beauty of the garden space and a reception that featured minimal greenery, natural textures, geometric accents, and calligraphy signs. Even the bride’s elegant gown from Essense of Australia, romantic waves, and overgrown bouquet created by her step-mom stayed true to the vibe. But Ebony and Rafael did add their personal stamp by hiring the Madd Mex Cantina food truck to cater the event. This wedding definitely lived up to the Victorian style without being stuffy or expected, and we love how Photography by Ben and Kadin and videographer Jake Hilger documented every dreamy moment.

The Couple:

Ebony and Rafael

The Wedding:

The Rengstorff House, Mountain View, California

The first thing that drew our attention to the venue was the cost. We wanted to be as cost efficient as possible, and we felt the cost was within our budget. When we saw the venue in person, we knew right away it was where we wanted to get married. It was outdoors but also had a beautiful Victorian house to prepare in. We felt it would offer enough space for guests while also providing an intimate feel. It was the only venue we visited.

The first look, oh man that was special! It’s as if that moment happened in slow motion and all the nervousness disappeared. All we felt was love. (That probably sounds super cheesy but it’s true!)

I think the greatest surprise was how the bouquets and boutonnieres turned out. My step-mom decided to take on the task of making them all for the very first time. I had no idea how they would turn out until I saw them shortly before the first look. We all loved them!

While we didn’t personally DIY anything for the wedding, our friends and family did and we’re so thankful! My step-mom made all of the bouquets and boutonnieres. Rafael‘s cousin arranged the flowers on the arbor. My mother’s coworker made the copper arbor, and my mother and grandmother arranged all the succulents in the glass votive holders. Originally I wanted to do a bunch of DIY but I accepted the reality that I am the ultimate procrastinator, and I would not have given myself enough time.

We didn’t want many decorations for our ceremony because we loved the natural look that the surrounding trees gave. We did, however, have a personalized copper arbor covered in florals. We wanted our first act as a husband and wife to be partaking in communion together. This was such a beautiful time for us because we had the chance to give thanks to our savior Jesus Christ and pray for one another. During communion, one of the bridesmaids played and sang, “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.”

Choosing our venue was the first thing we did after we got engaged, so that really helped guide the vibe we wanted to create. We combined a bit of Victorian style with modern and industrial details to create the visuals we wanted. We also created a chill vibe with lawn games and a food truck.

Advice from the bride: Wedding planning can be overwhelming. I would encourage those planning to remain kind to their spouse, family, and friends even when under stress. Have fun and get creative, and let your wedding really reflect who you and your spouse are (even if people think your ideas are weird or non-traditional). Use your engagement season to not only prepare for your wedding day but to really invest in preparing for marriage.

The food was one of the things we were most excited about. We had a delicious food truck cater our wedding and it was some of the best tacos we’ve had. Our menu consisted of many different tacos, rice, beans, carne asada fries, burritos, and burrito bowls.

Advice from the groom: The day goes by really quickly, don’t freak out, and stay calm. And don’t forget to eat! This is a beautiful time that you will remember forever. Again, don’t forget to eat.

This Couple Crafted All the Quirky Cool Details for Their Ace Hotel Palm Springs Wedding

March 29, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

If you think mid-century modern, celestial, bohemian, and earthy vibes can’t go together, just wait until you see the details in Lindsay and Sam’s Ace Hotel Palm Springs wedding. Even though this famous desert hotel offers plenty of personality on its own, the creative duo handmade nearly every piece of decor to add their own brand of quirkiness. The wood signs that the groom designed and engraved had both a celestial and a mid-century modern look, while the bride’s potted plants, greenery wall hanging, and sage bunches added a perfectly bohemian and earthy touch. That same free-spirited feel was also echoed in the bride’s relaxed Rue De Seine dress and her bridesmaid’s boho-chic frock from For Love and Lemons. In the end, Lindsay and Sam pulled all four styles together into an unforgettable event, and the photos captured by Kindred Wedding Storytellers highlight every ounce of the couple’s unique personalities.

The Couple:

Lindsay and Sam

The Wedding:

Ace Hotel, Palm Springs, California

We really wanted a warm night and a pool, as those things always make for our favorite memories. Also, Sam’s friends and family were coming all the way from England so we wanted them to have a proper holiday. We live in San Francisco, so we knew that a warm night would never be guaranteed, so we really gravitated to the California desert. After settling on the location we focused on planning a blissful day full of our favorite music, food, and people.

I had been terrified to walk down the aisle. Before the wedding I could barely think of that moment without feeling queasy. All eyes on me seemed like a nightmare. When it came to the moment though, I loved it. We had done such a good job creating our perfect day, not worrying about what we should do and focusing on what felt right to us, so it all felt so good. As I walked down the aisle, I saw the faces of so many people we loved who were all there to cheer us on, and Sam was standing there waiting to marry me. Oh man, it was amazing!

We decided to write our vows together. It was such a great thing to do to prepare for our marriage. For weeks we wrote down all of the values we wanted to bring into our marriage, and then we took that list and wrote our vows. We still go back and read them, to remind ourselves of the pillars we want to build our marriage on.

Plan your heart out before but, the day of, let it go and have fun. We made the decision to not to stress about anything the day of. We knew things wouldn’t go exactly as we planned and we were okay with that. Instead of stressing about the details, we paid a little extra and got a day-of coordinator so we could enjoy ourselves and cherish the day. We spent the morning swimming with our friends, slowly getting ready with our siblings, and sharing long lunches with friends and family. We really got to be present and relaxed all day. When the time came for our wedding to start, we were already so blissed out, we couldn’t have been more ready to get married and celebrate.

We really loved doing the more crafty things for our wedding because it allowed us to be creative when some of our other planning tasks felt a bit administrative. Sam is a designer, so he designed all the invitations and wooden boards (seating chart, welcome board, table numbers, etc.) and engraved them in wood he had cut. I wrapped all the sage sticks for our favors, dyed the napkins, painted candle votives, potted lavender for the ceremony (we loved the calming smell), and made a wall hanging.

I love the photo of us kissing in the pool. When I look at it I can go right back to that moment. The warm air, the sounds of our friends and family playing in the pool, and the feeling of making out with my new husband!
