This Floral-Inspired Villa Grabau Wedding was a Multicultural Celebration of Love

When Lilian and Fabio were planning their floral-inspired Villa Grabau wedding, they knew it would be a celebration of love, culture, and a little bit of sparkle! Lilian stayed true to her style by mixing her elegant and whimsical dress with fun, starry embellished socks. We also love how the florals Anthea Studio created add the perfect touch of romance in the reception hall and on the ceremony altar backdrop. The vibe was probably the most important thing for me. I wanted a wedding that celebrated who we are as two individuals but also as a couple. Hence the occasion was infused with a diverse mix of elements (vespa, gelato, batik, tea ceremony!) reflecting our ethnic background and traditions. Fabio is Italian, meanwhile my mum is Singaporean-Chinese and my dad is Indonesian. Ultimately, it’s the rich cultural mishmash that made the wedding unique and special to me.

Wedding planning advice from the bride: Planning the wedding in 9 months from across the world without a wedding planner was certainly no cakewalk. For couples considering a destination wedding, do solid research on the wedding planner to hire, if you are planning to get one. If you have a personalized wedding theme and aesthetic in mind, consider a competent wedding planner as one the more important and worthwhile investment to make.

Anthea Floral Studio really delivered–they were easy to work with, responsive in terms of the ideas I bring up and communication was quick and easy! I felt I was in good hands.

I couldn’t resist throwing in a sprinkle of sparkle into the mix which really became some of my favorite detail, like my starry socks and bridesmaids’ dresses. They radiate under the amazing Tuscan light!

We had a spreadsheet of up to 20 venues to begin with but a Villa Grabau wedding was always high up there. I fell in love with the villa’s 17th century limonaia, a greenhouse for citrus plants, where we held the reception. From the terracotta exterior to the big arched doors that connect the green area outside to the rather ‘raw’/rustic indoor space, there’s something special about the setting. It’s striking without being stuffy. The clincher was the climbing Fiscus that hangs from the high ceiling.

I’ve loved pastels all my life and chose these hues to add a touch of elegance to the wedding. Peach is the primary color & theme that we use across the various elements (including the invites and decoration) of the wedding. My nickname for Fabio is “momo,” Japanese for peach and it symbolizes longevity in the Chinese culture.

Dusty Pastel Dallas Wedding at The Place at Tyler

Hannah and Micah wanted to create a simple, yet beautiful wedding, so they chose minimalist venue The Place at Tyler and made it their own with hues of dusty pastel and lots of greenery! We love how Valerie Thompson Photography captured all of the sentimental moments of this couple’s day — and lots of rad portraits on the couple’s Indian “getaway” motorcycle. I chose to have my bridesmaids wear three different colors-a rusty mauve pink, sage green and mustard yellow. I loved the look of each color and how their more subtle tones blended together to add warmth and beauty to the ceremony and the venue. It took me a long time to decide on one color and I remember my sister finally saying why not just do all three? Beyond the color difference, I gave each girl the option to get a jumpsuit or a slip style or long flow dress. I personally love jumpsuits and knew that since the vibe of the wedding wasn’t going to be too formal jumpsuits could add a cool touch. I also really wanted to give each girl variety in what they chose because I wanted them to feel beautiful in the color they were wearing and beautiful in the style dress they wore too.

As for flowers, our venue helped us order florals from a wholesale company which was incredibly cheap and then my brother, sister in law, bridesmaids and friends helped put all the bouquets together the day before. Lastly, I had been on the edge about having a flower crown but decided the day before that I really wanted one so my sister and I made my flower crown the morning of the wedding!

My husband would argue that having me walk down the aisle was the most memorable part of the day, but we also both felt extremely loved, known and celebrated during the speeches made by my sister and Micah‘s two brothers. It was such a beautiful thing to be affirmed and celebrated together by such wonderful and loving people. Even though the entire ceremony and dancing afterward were something we’ll never forget, there was just some thing so uniquely special about sitting tougher as husband and wife and having beautiful words of blessing and encouragement spoken over us. We’ll forever be grateful for that moment.

When planning our wedding it was really important to us to create an environment that was both beautiful and comfortable. We knew we were going to have people coming from all over the world, since we both grew up abroad and we wanted to make sure that our guests were able to enjoy themselves at our wedding and celebrate with us. Beyond this though, since our faith is the most important thing in both of our lives, we really wanted to make sure that our decisions were rightly motivated. We wanted our guests to see the truest reason for our wedding-the deep, unrelenting love of Christ. 

Our photographer, Valerie Thompson and her second shooter, Kat Malone were incredible to work with. Not to mention fitting a bridal party of 22 people into one picture, getting all the family shots and then making us feel like a million bucks the whole time! Our videographer, Rex Hendricks also did an incredible job capturing the celebration and joy of our wedding day. We were truly SO lucky to have found them and wish everyone could experience working with such a wonderful crew.

We did give out wedding favors but they had also doubled as decoration. I knew we weren’t going to have a ton of extra space at the venue and I also wanted to have simple but beautiful decorations for the venue. Having grown up overseas in East Africa, both Micah and I had the privilege of traveling a lot. During high school I was able to take a trip to Morocco and loved just about everything there. So for our favors I had a friend, who lives there, buy 200 small moroccan pots/bowls the were about 2 inches high. They were hand made and painted with beautiful floral designs. We decided to order succulents and re-pot them in the pots for decoration on the table, down the aisle, even the cake, but then to have guests grab one on their way out.

All Our Fall Color Palette Dreams Came True in This East Austin Wedding

Give us all the cozy, Autumn vibes! Sophie and Adam’s cool East Austin wedding has us feeling cozy and ready for a cocktail to celebrate! If you know us at Junebug, you know we love a good fall color palette — and this one blew us away. The planning team at Bird Dog Wedding was behind all the goodness for this fabulous East Austin wedding, and we love how they assembled the perfect team to pull of the vision for the day with excellence. Austin, Texas

Our venue was actually a cocktail bar and restaurant in a historic house. We had been for happy hour before and loved the vibe, but we didn’t know they hosted events until our planner suggested we look into it as an East Austin wedding venue. As soon as we revisited the intimate courtyard and the gorgeous indoor bar we decided on the spot. It was low-key, but so special.

I wanted a dress that was simple but also unique. The sleek Sarah Seven dress and its cutouts made me feel classic with a little edge. I wore loose waves and natural makeup to contrast the sharp cuts of the dress. I was also set on having a massive bouquet, so I liked how the clean dress let it pop. Adam wanted an unstuffy look, and we loved the way his green linen suit fit with the organic feel of the wedding.

Gloria was amazing! She exudes calm and help put us at ease initially, then let us pretend to be cool taking photos lounging around the indoor bar while we waited on our guests. And she was able to get our dog Louie to pose for the camera. After portraits, Gloria and her team blended into the crowd capturing so many wonderful candid moments.

I love the range of photos that we have – serious and laughing, posed and candid – but my favorite is the portrait with our dog Louie under our ceremony space, which Gloria calls our “fridge photo.” As much as I love our serious photos, the brimming smiles are more reflective of us.

Wedding planning advice from the bride: Find an amazing planner that gets you, and then let them do their thing. Not only did Bird Dog take all of the stress out of planning, their vision and execution of our day was incredible. She pulled in an amazing team of vendors and handled every detail so that we got to focus on enjoying ourselves to the fullest.

We shared just a few phrases with Emily from Bird Dog about the vibe we were after – eclectic, organic, modern, and a little bit romantic – and she delivered on that and more. We knew we wanted lush florals, and Emily brought in Valerie Wolf of Davy Gray who ran with it. Valerie is so, so talented. Her creative vision and floral installations made our wedding – I am in complete awe of her passion for what she does. Plus, she is the kindest, most down-to-earth person. The result was absolutely stunning and more than we could have imagined. I was speechless when I entered the courtyard for the first time and I continued to be overwhelmed all night with how beautiful the installations were.

We had practiced some steps for our first dance, but when we got out there I realized my feet were going to be caught up in my dress. Adam didn’t realize and was so focused on following our routine that I fumbled through the whole thing, including tripping on the final dip. Now I understand why most couples just stand and sway…
