When it comes to planning your wedding, we know there’s always one thing that’s top-of-mind: budget. There are probably a million questions running through your mind when it comes to this topic. How much should we expect to pay? What areas can we save on costs? What services should we invest in? Luckily, you came to the right place for advice! Aside from the obvious advice to hire a planner who can help you map out the perfect budget for your needs, our Junebug top planners from around the world have provided their best wedding budget tips just for you!

Determine What’s Most Important

“Sit down and determine what is most important to you as a couple. Put more of your budget into what screams “you” and then it’ll feel better cutting back on other areas. Are you musicians? Focus your money there! Love being in the outdoors together? Allocate more towards a venue that embraces that!”

Simplify The Wedding Party

“Many of our couples recently have been skipping the wedding party. Instead, they’ve told their besties to wear a dress in a certain color family.  So no bridesmaids dresses or matching shoes needed, but you can still snag that cute photo with your friends! This has further benefits for budget, in not needing to fit wedding party gifts, groomsmen boutonnieres, bridesmaids hair and makeup, and bouquets into the budget. Bonus: Your friends will thank you when they can sit comfortably through the ceremony.”

Utilize Your Own Personal Treasures

“To our design team, bringing out nuances of the couples’ spirit is always our jam. Often I ask clients to look around their home and “shop.” Think of ways to incorporate decor elements and accents pieces you already own. Do you have Restoration Hardware wooden tooled candlesticks on your mantel? Grab those for me! Or Anthropologie baskets, vases or throws? Then pack them up and bring them!  As planners and designers we can incorporate what you already have. We can populate a welcome table with your wood trays from your home coffee table and we’ll use those trays to wrangle your Fugi Instamatic cameras. We can use one of your large West Elm vases as your gift card receptacle. You World Market wood frame makes great bar sign, your kilim throw pillows become accents to rented lounge furniture. Your grandmothers vintage china set?  Let’s use these for your dessert grazing table.”

Leave Some Room In Your Budget

“It’s essential to allocate an extra 5 to 10 percent of your money for surprise expenses like printing extra invites because of guest list changes, additional dress steaming, tailoring needs, umbrellas for a rainy day, and other last minute items.”

One Fine Day Events – New Zealand

Stick to Local Cuisine

If you choose to have destination wedding, go for local food. If you want French cuisine in Ecuador, the catering will cost you two to three times the cost of an amazing fusion or local cuisine made by a renowned local chef. You can also decide on having brunch or a local food buffet; this is another way of saving money by not having a plated reception. It will surely depend on the atmosphere you want on your wedding day.

Track Every Purchase

“First and foremost, be honest about your budget, having a realistic grasp on your budget will allow you to align with what you can afford. It’s easy to “break the bank” by not tracking the little things, like earrings, groom’s socks, new perfume or shoes. It’s these items people often forget to track and they wonder why they are running out of money.”

Whimsical Scandinavian-Inspired St. Paul Wedding at Paikka

October 30, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Megan and Charlie celebrated their love with a most fabulous Scandinavian-inspired wedding at Paikka in St. Paul, Minnesota! We must say, these two looked effortlessly cool with Megan wearing an eclectic, whimsical Mara Hoffman dress and Charlie dressed in a classic black and white getup from Suit Supply. We’re especially in love with the details of this day that planner Laine Palm Designs creatively pulled together. Everything was the perfect mix between elegant and fun — from the marigold bouquet and every arrangement Apricot Floral beautifully designed to the cat figurine cake toppers (yes, they’re incredible!). If you’re one who falls in love with intimate weddings and good vibes, we can’t wait for you to see how oh-so-talented Sarah Ascanio Photography captured these lovebirds’ most special day at Paikka!

The Couple:

Megan & Charlie

The Wedding:

Paikka, St. Paul, Minnesota

I have a deep appreciation for small businesses and designers, having worked closely with them for many years. I’ve since moved to the furniture world, but loved picking out a wedding look. I knew I wanted to find pieces that I could wear again. My mom gifted me the most elegant double pearl earrings from Sophie Buhai. I will treasure these forever. For my dress, I chose the Bette Dress by Mara Hoffman. I wanted dramatic sleeves, and this dress had that. Also, the cotton / linen fabric was so easy for an August wedding. My shoes are the Vitta Sandals by the impeccable Mari Giudicelli.

We moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles, two years ago. It was a long trip, caravanning with our friends, two cars filled to the brim with two cats and several house plants. We knew when we got engaged that we wanted to include our friends and family in the celebration and chose to have it back home in the Midwest, for this reason. We’re pretty untraditional – our dream was for a wedding that felt like a dinner party, with good food, lots of wine and shared memories.

Wedding planning advice from the couple: We had our wedding on a Thursday, didn’t invite kids, and had our friends bartend, DJ and officiate. A wedding can be whatever you want it to be – your people will be happy for you no matter what. Also, hire a great team and trust them to do their thing. We had no idea how valuable having a wedding planner would be, and we feel so lucky to have chosen Laine Palm. She is so professional and easy to work with, would definitely recommend to anyone.

The colors just happened – marigold for a golden day. We completely trusted our florist, Apricot Floral to create something soft, lush and memorable. She happened to choose strawflowers (also known as golden everlasting) for my bouquet and the boutonnières. My friends also happened to all wear marigold dresses!

Charlie‘s mom made our beautiful wedding cake. We had little figurines of our cats on the cake!

We had so many guests travel from all over the world. It was so special to have all those great friends and family in one place to share our day with us. Looking out during dinner and seeing everyone we love at these long tables, talking in the candle light, was exactly what we had imagined.

Wedding inspiration is crucial! I love some boho feels but also love a classic vibe. Inspiration helps stir up your imagination and gets you on the right track helping you pull your look all together! I absolutely loved my dress and accessorizing it was my favorite part. I wanted to have some statement pieces to make my wedding day look and feel like my everyday looks. I bought my beaded heels secondhand as well as my cream colored wide brim hat! I think the hat was my favorite, especially with the dried flowers!

Wedding planning advice from the bride: Try to balance out the duties between each other! Find the things each of you are interested in and have them be in charge. It helped us and we never felt too overwhelmed. Get creative with DIY and thrift decor. Communicate and have patience, it will all come together! The most important thing to us when it came to planning our wedding was to enjoy the process and to keep it as intimate as possible. Matt loved doing spreadsheets and timelines and I loved working on the decor so we found a balance and really enjoyed it!

I cannot say enough good things about our photographer Eve! There were so many amazing photos! I think our favorite is the shot of us outside of the iron gate. We couldn’t believe it was us! Working with her was the easiest part about the wedding. She was always went above and beyond our expectations. She was involved throughout the whole year and made a point to be extremely friendly and helpful. We felt like we really knew her so that when the day came, we felt comfortable and genuine. Her assistant was just as amazing. They captured everything!

Our venue hunt was challenging, neither of us had a dream plan so we considered all options! We were back and forth on eloping but decided to have a small wedding with family. We wanted to find something that was green, urban, and customizable to fit our style! That’s when we discovered Madera Kitchen. It was all of those things and more. It felt homey, green all in the heart of Hollywood.

We had a great team of wedding professionals! We are so grateful to have worked with them all. Our florist made it such a beautiful experience, we even saved the dried palms from the ceremony for home decor! I do have to say our photographer Eve was absolutely phenomenal. She truly loves what she does and is extremely professional and goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and excited about your big day. Also, our Dj Wes from good mood was so awesome! He was very reliable and gave us free reign to choose our music but also offer his professional advice. He made the dance floor flow seamlessly into a killer dance party!

We are vegan and tried to have a friendly menu to appeal to everyone. We had great veggie appetizers like hummus and pita, flat breads, and veggie burger sliders. For entrees we had vegan veggie lemon pasta, vegetarian ravioli, and to be fair to our more carnivorous family we added a pineapple white fish dish! We had a beautiful desert table with favorite vegan donuts from Donut Friend. We actually bonded over a box of these donuts the first time we met!
