Scottish Destination Elopement in the Isle of Skye

March 6, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Compromise was the name of the game in James and Paul’s wedding planning process. While James wanted a 200-person wedding in Mexico complete with a street party and a tequila donkey, Paul wanted to opt for something a little more intimate and timeless. Enter Scotland’s gorgeous coastal area, Isle of Skye. The couple’s Scottish destination elopement was equal parts breathtaking and playful, and we can’t get enough of photographer Eric Rene Penoy‘s documentation of their day. Shoot Me Now Films captured every intimate moment of James and Paul’s elopement in a theatrical film, including the couple’s deeply emotional vows shared among the powerful winds and rain in the Isle of Skye. And, don’t worry, James got his giant Mexican-inspired wedding reception once the couple returned home to the United States!

The Couple:

James and Paul

The Wedding:

Isle of Skye, Scotland

The most important part of wedding planning was selecting a timeless destination that we could return to over the years and not have the fear of it being changed.

We were set on having our wedding outdoors, which is funny because we are not really outdoorsy people. We chose Skye for its timelessness, dramatic landscape and rapidly shifting climate–the lighting whether dark or bright was pure magic.

The most memorable part was the intensity of it being just us and the celebrant on a quiet beach truly away from the world. And of course the truly Scottish weather–from partly sunny and windy in the morning to full on horizontal rain and brooding clouds during our ceremony!

Since we eloped none of our family or friends were there, but Paul had a surprise in store for me! Paul collected letters from all of them–full of well wishes, love, and advice–and presented them to me during the ceremony saying that they were all here in spirit and we would read them later. We have all of them saved in a box at home now.

We wanted darker suits and classic white shirts with lightly patterned ties–we felt this would work well with the Scottish landscape. And, on the high chance it would rain, the darker colors were not affected by the wetness!

Our advice: Compromising is okay–even recommended, if you’re going to share a life together. I started out wanting a medium-big wedding 200 people in Mexico with a street party and a tequila donkey (yes, it’s a real thing!), but that would have been 100% my personality and none of Paul‘s. So eventually we decided on eloping and then having the big ol’ Mexican party for our reception back in the States.

Our photographer Daniel, our videographer Eric, and our officiant Leslie were phenomenal. Literally we started as strangers and left as friends. Even when the light was at its darkest and the weather at its wettest they did the impossible and got the shots which Paul and I can look back on for decades to come. More than just professional they were genuine and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Colorado Woodland Wedding with a 1920s Twist

March 6, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Elizabeth and Kramer’s wedding blended majestic Colorado woodland vibes with glamorous 1920s flair! The couple has family roots in Colorado’s Estes Park area, so they had their ceremony in the picturesque Camp St. Malo, also known as Chapel on the Rock. We love how the couple chose a color palette of earth tones and deep fig to complement their reception venue’s natural scenery, and we can’t get enough of A Florae‘s protea-heavy floral design that reflected that palette! Jordan Voth Photography captured every moment of Elizabeth and Kramer’s Colorado woodland wedding, including the bridal party’s splash around the St. Vrain River during the reception.

The Couple:

Elizabeth and Kramer

The Wedding:

Camp St. MaloRiver Bend, Lyons, Colorado

From the groom: I’ve driven past St. Malo hundreds of times in my life and each time, I told myself that if I ever was lucky enough to find love, I would get married in that chapel. My wife and I were one of the dozens of couples that are married in that chapel each year. The setting is stunning, but the reason I wanted to be married at St. Malo runs deeper than that. My family has been tied to Estes Park and the surrounding area for over one hundred years. We have been lucky enough to have cabins that have remained in our family since the late 1880s. Generations have come and gone, however, we all have shared a common love of this magical place. It only made sense to celebrate the best day of my life in my favorite place in the world.

We wanted to create a romantic and fun evening that felt like a 1920’s party tucked away in the woods. I fell in love with Riverbend immediately. I never really dreamed of my wedding as a little girl but as I grew older, I had this vision of a huge party in the forest with twinkling lights and candles. The Riverbend made my little dream a reality. It is nestled right next to the St. Vrain river and has these towering red rocks overlooking the area. The space itself is sprawling grass with beautiful and unique sections for various parts of the evening. The dance floor was right next to the river. It felt elegant and dramatic.

We wanted a 1920’s party feel with elements of Colorado mixed in. An elegant and dreamy feel. Ethereal and bohemian meets a 1920’s party.

Our wedding colors were earth tones and LOTS of various shades of green. The main colors were fig, olive, and emerald. The bouquets were full of texture and various greenery. We wanted to enhance the beauty of Colorado and really bring out the exquisite and majestic feel of the mountains.
