The Lord of the Rings Meets Wes Anderson Wedding of Every Nerd’s Dreams

August 28, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Lindsey and Nicholas’ wedding day is straight out of a movie – or a couple of them. This Wes Anderson inspired wedding has Lord of the Rings influence that shines in the details. Lindsey and Nicholas had many DIY projects that include a Wes Anderson canvas tent, ceramic mugs for their guests, and thrifted pieces for the centerpieces. It all tied together with Jason Lucas Photography and his incorporation of Wes Anderson’s affinity for centered composition and aerial shots in his work.

The Couple:

Lindsey and Nicholas

The Wedding:

Ya Ya Farm and Orchard, Longmont, Colorado

Before my mom brought me to Nicholas amidst our guests so that we could walk everyone to our ceremony site together, I was standing in the barn so that Nicky couldn’t see me. But I could see him. It was a special moment for me, to see my sexy man cake laughing with all of our loved ones and just being him. I could also look out at the orchard and absorb what we had created together. We put a lot of sweat, tears, and laughter into that day. We designed, handmade, and collected everything. Having those minutes to be a fly on the wall, happy butterflies in my stomach, will stick in my mind forever.

Our ceremony was completely “unplugged” and raw–we were in the trees, after all! Our friend played the bugle to call us all together, but after that, all you could hear was the birds.

I am honored to have a really loving set of mothers now. My mother and step-mother-in-law handmade over 200 ceramic cups for us. Each cup was completely different from the next! As the guests made their way to the bar, they got to pick their cup for the night and then take it home. It was incredibly special to have so much of our mothers in the day.

Courtney at Windflower Events nailed it. Nailed it! I had no idea I was so picky when it came to flowers! (Sorry, Courtney). But she was incredibly patient and even got down into specific varieties with me all the way until she went to collect the blooms. Not only were they stunning and exactly what we wanted, I got to revel in them for days and days after the wedding in my home.

We like to describe the vibe as Wes Anderson if he were to film the Shire. My husband is a huge Wes Anderson fan and I am steadfast Lord of the Rings nerd. Surprisingly, these two concepts came together very well! On our invites we encouraged vests (both Wes Anderson-y and hobbitish), we chose dark, rich tones and incorporated an absurd amount of antiques we acquired through estate sale shopping the year before. We even hand-built a canvas tent. Moonrise Kingdom, anyone? Our attire we picked to be utterly ourselves–so I think it’s pretty evident how much we love Wes Anderson and those silly Bagginses just from that.

Jason, our photographer, was incredibly thoughtful and thorough. I didn’t notice him at all during the ceremony (sneaky!). And when we got to take photos as a couple he made the process not only easy but relaxing! It felt like Nicky and I just got time together after our ceremony. But DANG! The photos are absolutely incredible. People aren’t joking when they say that the photographer is the most important vendor of the evening–the evidence is right here.

Instead of a first dance, Nicky and I did a “first karaoke”. We sang “Endless Love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie – the most heartfelt duet you will ever find. We did not hold back.

This Caffino Ristorante Wedding Feels Like a European Getaway in Downtown Toronto

August 27, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

When Natalie and Mario stumbled across Caffino Ristorante, they realized their dreams of a European wedding could be recreated in downtown Toronto. The intimate space was perfect for a casual and fun wedding vibe true to the relaxed couple. Natalie, a graphic designer, created the invites, menus and thank you cards, as well as the fabulous lace chocker that went perfectly with her simple, sexy A La Robe wedding dress. Photographer Kayla Rocca captured the couple’s most memorable part of the day, their first look.

The Couple:

Natalie and Mario

The Wedding:

Caffeine Ristorante, Toronto

I didn’t have much style inspiration, I knew I wanted something simple and sexy for my dress. I kept my hair and makeup on the natural side, I wanted to look like myself. Bridesmaids wore different, long black dresses, that they choose.

I’m a graphic designer so I DIY’ed invites, menus, thank you cards, signage. I also DIY’ed the chocker necklace that I wore.

My photographer was amazing, I felt so comfortable with her and she was able to capture such beautiful moments. Our first look was the most memorable moment of the day.

Processional: Angels by The XX
Recessional: Real Love by Beach House
First Dance: Harvest Moon by Neil Young

We originally wanted to get married in Europe and came across Caffino which feels like a European Cafe. We choose Caffino because it was small, intimate and beautiful.

Stylish Succulent Wedding at The York Manor

August 27, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Rachel and Cody stripped down traditional wedding conventions to create a fun, minimalist summer ceremony at The York Manor. Fashionable botanic décor celebrated the bright white space with splashes of green and pastel from the potted cacti and succulents, which guests were invited to take home. The bride and groom created a low key vibe with an intimate guest list, taco buffet and plenty of margaritas to emulate a fun summer party and a completely stress-free zone. The couple was initially camera shy, but we love how Even Keel Weddings was able to put them at ease in a series of creative and unique portraits.

The Couple:

Rachel and Cody

The Wedding:

The York Manor, Los Angeles, California

Instead of flowers, we chose to decorate with handpotted succulents and cacti. As the wedding came to a close, we invited all of our guests to pick a plant (or two) to take home with them. We love that we were able to eliminate waste, as well as give guests something that they can have for many, many years.

We wanted to be practical, and eliminate traditions that didn’t suit us, or that we thought might impede on the low-key/stress-free vibe that we had envisioned. This showed in our decision to not have a bridal party, or assigned seating.

We were really so fortunate to have stumbled across such a beautiful space! Our decor decisions were about honoring the space, as well as the practicality of minimalism. We kept as much white as we could, which I think really highlighted the splashes of green and pastel from the cacti and pots. The crispness and brightness played well with the summertime bridal vibe that we were going for.

The emotional immensity of the day hit me right as the doors opened for me to walk down the aisle. This was combined with stage fright, and my walk down the aisle was very shaky and very tearful. I forgot how to walk! For me, the most memorable part of the day was when I reached Cody after a seemingly endless aisle. My nerves were immediately quieted, and my heart was calmed, and I could breathe and walk again. During the ceremony, the whole world faded out and it was just the two of us, smiling and laughing to ourselves.

My husband and I both despise posing for photos and she and Sean made it so quick and painless and allowed us to get right back to the party! She was so patient, and her calming energy quieted my bridal mania throughout the entire day. Her creativity and talent shine through in our portraits that ended up being so unique, and so true to Cody and I as people.

We wanted more than anything for our wedding to be fun. We wanted a summer party full of the people that we love most in the world. It is why we decided to have an intimate guest list and to serve tacos and margaritas. We wanted there to be good music, good food, good drinks and good friends. We felt that all the other details would sort themselves out.

There can be so much pressure and expectation when planning a wedding. I kept myself sane by having the presence of our friends and family be the only real priority. It is the one day of our lives that we can have all of the people we love most together with us, and acknowledging that brought me a lot of peace. If everything had gone wrong on the day of the wedding, and we had to serve pizzas and malt liquor next to a boom box, I really believe that we would have enjoyed it just the same. Let the details remain details!
