A Las Vegas Neon Museum Wedding Full of Quirk, Color, and Charm

December 11, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Alexis and Nathan’s Neon Museum wedding is the definition of fun. With pops of color, nostalgic vibes, and quirky accessories, it’s hard not to love this couple’s destination wedding! With family spread out all over the country, they chose to get married in Las Vegas, where they had visited years prior to their big day. We are in love with Alexis’ colorful Mylofluer bouquet and Mignonne Handmade hair piece, not to mention her pink dinosaur purse! As if it couldn’t get better, Alexis and Nathan opted for a cotton candy stand during their reception for the ultimate bit of nostalgia that took you back to your childhood. All of this goodness and more was captured by JamieY Photography and Lighten Films.

As soon as possible, sit down together as a couple and talk about what each of you envision on your wedding day. While you won’t see eye to eye on everything, communication about what are “must-haves” is key. Think back to the last wedding you attended – what stood out to you? What details do you not even remember? Write it all down and refer back to it. Constantly. As times goes on, people with the greatest of intentions will weigh in on what they think your wedding should and shouldn’t be. Don’t let their opinions take over what you initially wanted. Trust your gut and intuition. It’s ok to ask for advice, and then ignore it. Sometimes you just need someone else to weigh in to help you reach your decision.

The first look was the most memorable part of our day. Everything before and after the first look happened so fast. It was serendipitous to have an intimate moment to ourselves and remind us of the commitment we were about to make to each other. After the whirlwind of being surrounded by friends and family, it was amazing to see each other and talk in private. Bonus: The first look helped shake our nerves of walking down the aisle!

Nathan and I exchanged bike bells on the day of the wedding to symbolize the bicycles we bought for each other as wedding gifts. We love to go on adventures and often end up renting bikes when vacationing in a new city. Nathan received a wooden bike bell to represent his love of woodworking, andAlexis received a custom painted bike bell that included a tandem bicycle and our wedding date.

Early on we knew we wanted a very personal ceremony. We didn’t want to feel like we were just going through the motions to get married. We knew one of our closest friends, Will, officiated weddings for friends and family in the past, and we could trust him to present a funny yet heartfelt ceremony. He brought us together before the wedding and to ask questions about our relationship and in private, asked us to spill the beans about each other. It helped him craft a beautiful ceremony that included mentioning our cat, Tater Tot, and our love of craft beer. We also invited Nathan‘s mom to read a scripture from the Bible and we wrote our own vows. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

In 2015, Nathan and I went to the Punk Rock Bowling festival in downtown Las Vegas. We went to the Neon Museum for a night tour and casually chatted about how amazing it would be to get married among all of the signs. Fast forward to September 2016 right after our engagement. While sitting down at our local watering hole, we both picked the museum as our number one venue. Most of my family and friends live in Seattle or Portland and his are in Ft. Worth. Since it was going to be a destination wedding for almost everyone, we figured we might as well take the plunge and get hitched in Vegas!

Our highest priority was making sure our guests had fun and our wedding reflected us as a couple. I often joke that “classy” was never a word we used to describe what we wanted on our wedding day. We wanted unique details, rich color, and a hint of nostalgia.

Pastel Boho New Orleans Wedding at Race & Religious

December 11, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Ashley and Thomas’ boho wedding at Race & Religious has the most perfect pastel palette. The old books and light pink blooms and greenery from Leaf and Petal are the perfect combination for eclectic centerpieces on each table. Dressed to the nines in her Sarah Seven gown and his Suitsupply blue suit, Ashley and Thomas are looking dapper as ever. The New Orleans charm carries through the day, especially when Young Pinstripe Brass Band plays during Ashley and Thomas’ grand entrance into their reception – what better way to kick off a party by the Bayou! Aaron & Whitney Photography was there to capture the entire day’s festivities, even the surprise pool party at the end of the night!

It was incredible working with our photographers, Aaron and Whitney! They truly understood what we were looking for in our photos. Nothing too staged everything natural but with the people that meant the most to us.

My favorite photo is mine and Thomas’ wide smiles, hand in hand after our “I dos” walking down the aisle. The photograph is in black and white and it captured exactly what we were feeling and what everyone else was feeling.

We DIY’d signs, created a hashtag #idobythebayou, printed photos of friends and family who were coming to the wedding.

We were looking for a place that we didn’t have to do much to. It was already a stunning place. The venue had natural greenery everywhere and old fireplaces. If you know me, fireplaces were key. Thomas proposed in front of my family’s fireplace on my family’s farm.

A lot of the design of the venue guided us to our overall vibe. It was whimsical and rustic. Pastel colors tons of greenery and flowers all lit with candlelight under the stars.

Both my husband and I work in the hospitality industry and we truly wanted to create an experience that people would remember. Not only would they remember our wedding but how incredible the entire event made them feel as well.

The most memorable part of the day is when the groomsmen decided to all jump in the pool at the end of the night in their suits! I have to say, I would have done it too – it was so HOT.

This Handmade Strongwater Wedding is Chock Full of Personality

December 10, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Chelsea and Shamus nixed the wedding traditions that they felt didn’t authentically embody their personalities for their celebration at Strongwater Food & Spirits – a restaurant, bar, and industrial event space in a century old warehouse in the heart of downtown Columbus. The super cool urban warehouse aesthetic featured gorgeous natural light, exposed brick, and rustic metal framework that was the perfect setting for their authentic and intimate celebration of tacos and tandem bicycles. A florist herself, the bride made and designed all of the lush blooms in shades of bright red, coral, and pale pink provided by her shop, Flowerman, and created the stunning hanging macramé installations throughout the venue. The Little Donut Shop created the teeny-tiny wedding cake and decadent donut spread that completed this whimsical and creative reception. The bride’s casual bohemian Show Me Your Mumu bell-sleeve wedding dress and fashionable groom’s fun floral tie from Dazi, the perfect look for a couple happy to run, jump, and cycle around the city following their nuptials, which was captured so beautifully by Candacelynn Photography.

The Couple:

Chelsea and Shamus

The Wedding:

Strongwater Food & Spirits, Columbus, Ohio

It was most important to us that our wedding authentically and uniquely represented who we are as a couple. We didn’t want to have any of the traditional “fluff” if it didn’t have meaning to us. We really wanted our wedding to be intimate and down to the bare bones so that our love is all that was felt that day. We nixed the idea of the typical bridal party standing next to us, they picked their own outfits andsat in the audience. No party favors, no bouquet or garter toss, no something old, something blue. We ate tacos and donuts and rode off on a tandem bicycle – all things that represent us.

The most memorable part of our day for us was our first look. I wasn’t nervous at all in the days or hours leading up to the wedding except for the moment we pulled up to the old stone church where we would see each other for the first time. I got butterflies as I saw him standing there waiting for me. The emotions came flooding in all at once – this was the day we had been waiting for our whole lives and more intensely for the past year! I would soon get to marry the man of my dreams!

At first, I thought I was crazy for trying to plan a wedding in only 5 months but it forced me to stick to my decisions, it limited the amount of money I spent and it left me little time to hoard unnecessary wedding décor. I think 5 months was plenty of time so my advice is to just go for it, don’t waste time planning an elaborate wedding! Also, do not go into debt for your wedding. It’s a one day event, you don’t want to enter into marriage stressing about pay for it for the next few years. We created a budget, cut back on things and paid for everything in cash.

Strongwater was my dream venue but I did not expect it to be available or within our budget but by the grace of God, I reached out to them and they had the day we wanted available and at a reasonable price. The space fit our personalities andthe vibe we wanted for the wedding perfectly. Its industrial and unique, it accommodated our guests perfectly and the staff helped execute my vision perfectly.

I always thought I’d have a very neutral wedding but since we decided to have simple décor, we wanted the elements that we had to stand out. I pulled the copper, pinks and reds from the brick walls of the venue and tied those colors into the rugs, my flowers and the copper accents throughout the space. Everywhere else we just had cream mixed with greenery.

I handmade the large macramé piece for the photo op area, as well as hoops with macramé andgreenery above the dance floor. Shamus hand-cut our grey linen napkins and my brother cut the copper name card holders. I wanted to do as little DIY as possible because even though it can save money, it is very time consuming (just ask Shamus about the napkins).

After our first look, we got on top of the church where Shamus is the pastor. Candace had a Bluetooth speaker she carried on her hip, she played soft, acoustic music and we danced around. The pictures are beautiful and it is so special that we were over-looking the community that we serve.
