Elegant Vintage-Inspired Outdoor Wedding at The Ridge Asheville

June 22, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Katie and Kenneth’s winter wedding at The Ridge Asheville was equal parts elegant and quirky. They chose North Carolina because of the mountain views and the beer scene, both of which they incorporated into their day by having an outdoor ceremony and giving custom beer glasses as favors. They even managed to show off their inner Star Wars nerd love with not one but two themed cakes and a lightsaber exit too adorable for words! Between the classic black and white color palette, the elegant design put together by the team at The Venue, and understated floral design created by Flora, Katie and Kenneth fully embraced a formal look and feel while keeping their wedding down-to-Earth. Photography Anthology perfectly captured every moment of this unforgettable wedding!

Katie and Kenneth

The Wedding:

The Ridge Asheville and The Venue, Asheville, North Carolina

There were a few things we wanted to keep in mind while planning our wedding–first, to make sure our inner nerd shined through! And second, to make sure our love of music was honored. We made all of the major decisions about our day together and that made all the difference!

For both of us, the most memorable part of the day was the ceremony. Specifically when we saw each other for the first time that day. It had been a bit overcast most of the afternoon, but all of a sudden beautiful sun shined through right as I walked down the aisle. The string trio was playing “Can’t Help Falling In Love with You” and it was absolutely perfect. We also very much enjoyed our lightsaber exit! It was such a blast walking through the tunnel of our friends, family, and lightsabers.

We knew we wanted to get married in Asheville, NC. It is our favorite city for weekend getaways and where we got engaged! The reason we love Asheville is both for its wonderful Blueridge Mountain views and the downtown beer scene. We looked for venues that really showcased both of these things.

Our wedding planning advice would be to stop making decisions and finish planning as soon as possible. We made all our big decisions (venue, photographer, dress) about a year out, then slowly picked our other vendors. We had made all our plans so that the entire month or two before our wedding, and we didn’t have anything else to decide or arrange. It was a very relaxing time leading up to the wedding because of our early planning and our amazing planning team!

We were absolutely blown away by the speeches given at our reception. My dad (father of the bride), matron of honor, and best man (groom’s brother) gave speeches. They were all so sweet, funny, and impressive. It was such a humbling moment to have our friends and family speak so highly of our love for one another and them.

This Couple Leaned Into Their Darker Aesthetics for Their Alderbrook Spa & Resort Wedding

June 21, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Dark, moody, and oh-so-romantic: Katherine and Matthew’s wedding at Alderbrook Spa & Resort was what PNW dreams are made of! Using a mix of their own artistic skills and the styling expertise of Simply Wed, the couple brought the elegance with a black, white, gold, and green color palette and added a modern flair with handmade arches, terrariums, signage, and photo booth props table. Even their wedding day attire had a moody and modern edge with Katherine rocking an intricate, long-sleeved lace Martina Liana gown and bold makeup and Matthew donning a black-on-black layered look with a thick scarf and custom metal necktie from Angelflie Design. Every moment of this wedding was unique and visually stunning, and photographers Nick + Danée didn’t miss a beat in capturing it all.

The Couple:

Katherine and Matthew

The Wedding:

Alderbrook Spa & Resort, Union, Washington

The moments leading up to the ceremony were very memorable because, once we saw each other, the rest of the day was a swirl of emotions and events. For Matthew, standing with our officiant and watching everyone file in before I came into view was his favorite part of the day. For myself, waiting with my father to walk down the aisle and hearing our guests right around the corner. There was so much anxiety and excitement in those moments that it sticks out.

We worked within a few parameters since most of our guests were flying in from out of state. It needed to be in our desired location of a wooded/forest area, be a reasonable distance from a major airport, and have convenient lodging for all ages. Our venue was actually the first one we visited and we instantly could imagine our friends and family there.

We didn’t have any specific inspiration besides our own darker aesthetics and comfort. From the beginning, I was set on having my dress have a high neck and long sleeves. I love intricate details and Matthew prefers minimalism, so I wanted my dress to reflect both of us. The ability to combine our preferences is the favorite thing about my dress, which was actually 2 pieces. Our party wore dark greys and the bridesmaids have some liberty about the style of dress to choose from.

Most of our wedding felt very DIY! We put together table number terrariums, table decor for the reception foyer, arch, all photobooth props, and menu board. We spent many weeks leading up to the wedding putting everything together. Matthew made our wedding arch, finalizing it on site with the help of groomsmen and bridesmaids’ significant others. We also had a photobooth with handmade paper masks of woodland animals such as a fox, cat, bear, and owl.
