Rustic, DIY, and Secondhand Wedding at Pencarrow Lodge

September 9, 2020 | riley

Yinny and Yong-Le wanted their New Zealand forest wedding to be a fun weekend getaway for their friends and family. When they stumbled upon Pencarrow Lodge, they knew it was the perfect spot. Their day was full of DIY touches including a copper painted PVC pipe arch, a picture frame installation that served as a photo backdrop, a faux flower photo wall, and personalized calligraphed driftwood that served as place cards. While it may be a bit time consuming, this goes to show you that a DIY wedding is not only one of the best ways to add your special touch to your day, it can also be the best way to make it sustainable!

Photographer Jane Lee perfectly captured the warmth of the day as well as the small touches that are easy to miss. So keep your eyes peeled and get those Pinterest boards ready, Junebabes. You won’t want to miss these details.

The Wedding:

Pencarrow Lodge, Eastbourne, Wellington, New Zealand

Why a Pencarrow Lodge Wedding

We were really fortunate to have found a gem of a venue for our wedding. It’s perched on a hill by the ocean, showcasing the amazing rugged coastal landscape Wellington is famed for. On a nice day–lucky for us our wedding day was beautiful–you can see the South Island on the horizon and sheep grazing on the rugged paddocks. We fell in love with having our wedding at the venue the first time we went for a tour. It was only about an hour out of the city, the view is amazing, and we knew we’d be making unforgettable memories for us as well as our family and friends flying in.

DIY Wedding Advice

If you’re planning to DIY, our advice would be to start early. Visit your local second-hand shops to see what’s out there already. Join Facebook groups–there are plenty out there where people are selling things they no longer want. And, at the end of the day, don’t forget to absorb and take in the moment–all the hard work came down to this.

A Charitable Wedding Favor

On behalf of all our guests, we donated to Kaibosh–our local food rescue charity–which rescues and redistributes food and produce from the hospitality industry to the people in need. In return, Kaibosh gave us magnets with a personalized message, which we paired with postcards we designed ourselves that explained our wedding favor for them. We decided to give the gift of giving as it bore more meaning and provided us a way to share this day with even more people.

A Reception Complete With a Haircut

Yong-Le had a head full of dreadlocks when I first met him and that was the only look of his that I knew. However, at our cake cutting, he whipped out a pair of scissors–which he presented to both our dads–and started untying his dread-bun. Let’s just say that both of our dads weren’t very keen on his dreads. By the end of the night, I went home with a transformed man. A few days later, I lost him in the crowd when we took my family sightseeing!

How to Put Together the Perfect Staycation Honeymoon

September 8, 2020 | riley

This post is dedicated to all of the 2020 couples who are navigating the uncharted waters of wedding planning during a global pandemic. Between postponing your wedding, opting for a more intimate micro wedding, and planning while quarantined at home, wedding planning looks much different.

We’ve talked a bit about planning a micro wedding and trimming down your wedding guest list, but what happens after you tie the knot–you know, the honeymoon?

The days of hopping on a plane and exploring faraway places are on pause for now. Unfortunately, this is affecting honeymooners all over the world.  While there’s a good chance that you would much rather celebrate your time as newlyweds sipping fruity cocktails on the beach, you don’t have to sacrifice celebrating You and your spouse should still enjoy a proper staycation honeymoon! Thanks to COVID-19, these staycation honeymoons are becoming increasingly popular.

So what are a few staycation honeymoon options? And what are the benefits? Junebug is here to help you put together the perfect staycation honeymoon so you can still soak up that time with your new spouse.

The Benefits of A Staycation Honeymoon

While it might not be your first choice, there are many benefits to having a staycation honeymoon! If you’ve found yourself in this position, don’t let the change of plans ruin your fun. You can still have a great honeymoon here and now—seriously.

Staycation Honeymoons Help Prioritize and Appreciate Future Travels

One day in the future, you will look back and feel incredibly thankful that you survived the pandemic. Not only will you have a newfound appreciation of life, but you’ll also be able to prioritize and appreciate all your future travel.

It’s easy to get caught up in the everyday stresses of life and make excuses to avoid seeing the world. Let’s face it, we’ve all said “we’ll go next year” at some point. Once travel is available again, you can pick any destination that your heart desires.

Staycation Honeymoons Help You Save Money

Honeymoons can get pretty pricey pretty quickly, especially if you’re considering an international destination. From airfare to lodging to food to excursions, it all adds up fast. Whether you choose to host yourself at home or stay at a local hotel, you will likely save a fair amount of money without sacrificing the fun.

There’s Less to Worry About

While a budget is crucial to keep in mind when traveling, figuring out logistics is equally important. Typically you’d have to consider transportation and entertainment on top of figuring out where to stay and where to eat. By planning a staycation, you take away that stress since you are familiar with the area, and you may even have your own car to get around.

Staycation Honeymoon Ideas

There are a number of ways that you can enjoy a staycation honeymoon. When planning, consider what speaks to you and your fiancee the most. Would you rather save money and splurge when travel is back to normal, or would you rather shell out a little money on a local hotel or Airbnb? Regardless of your decision, there are plenty of options.

Find a Cute Local Airbnb or Hotel

We absolutely love Airbnbs. They make you feel at home while on vacation. You can find every type of lodging on Airbnb–from treehouses to yurts to luxurious villas, there’s something for every couple. They are often cheaper than most hotels, too!

If there’s a local hotel that you’ve been eyeing for a while, what better excuse to stay for a night or two than to celebrate the next chapter of your love? Hotels are the perfect place to take advantage of relaxing amenities. Whether you choose a day at the spa or room service galore—or both—is up to you.

Go on a Road Trip Within Your State

Hear us out, even if you think you’ve seen everything that there is to see in your home state, there’s a good chance that you haven’t explored everything. We love road trips here at Junebug and believe that they’re one of the most underrated ways to travel. You get to spend more time with your new spouse, and you can also make as many stops as you want. So whether you’ve got a couple of days to spare or a couple of weeks, you’re in charge of your itinerary.

Turn Your Home into a Boutique Hotel

Budgeting doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the finer things in life. There are many ways that you can turn your home into a boutique hotel that won’t break the bank the way a traditional honeymoon would. Splurge on luxurious linen sheets, rock a fluffy robe, wear memory foam slippers, and stock the bar with every drink you can think of so you can play bartender.

If lounging around your home isn’t your style you can also plan a themed night. Canceled plans for an extravagant Italian honeymoon before COVID can now become an entire night based around Italian culture. Options include homemade pasta, wine aplenty, Italian music, gelato, and even Italian attire. Just because you can’t hop on a plane doesn’t mean you can’t pretend you’re sipping an Aperol spritz on the coasts of Positano.

Go Somewhere You’ve Never Been Before

As mentioned earlier, there are likely spots within your state–even city–that you have yet to experience. Take advantage of this time, and go somewhere you’ve never been before. It could be a restaurant, a hotel, a lake, a new hike–you name it. There’s something magical about experiencing something new with your loved one.

Turn Off Your Phone

Cell phones, while extremely useful, can also be extremely distracting. Endlessly scrolling on Instagram or continually texting both have the same result— lost time! Opt for entirely uninterrupted time and turn your phone off for your staycation. Notifications seem too tempting? Get a lockbox, throw in the phones, lock it up, and put away the key!

What to Pack

No matter what you decide to do, there are a few essentials that every honeymooner needs.

For Lounging

For Romance

For Early Mornings and Late Nights

Although it may not be ideal, don’t let COVID-19 ruin your honeymoon! Enjoy one of these staycation honeymoon ideas and soak up time with your new partner for life. You deserve it, Junebabes.

Intimate Neutral South Carolina Wedding at Hotel Domestique

September 8, 2020 | riley

At first glance, Briana and Anatoliy appear to have been married in a villa in Italy. But their intimate neutral wedding took place at Hotel Domestique in South Carolina–the perfect venue for their European wedding vision. The pops of dusty purple and light pink in the bouquets and ceremony backdrop put together by Statice Flowers tie in perfectly with the pampas grass. And the velvet grey table cloths, gold accents, and fairy lights contrast flawlessly with the green rolling countryside of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Briana’s Justin Alexander gown added some glam to the affair with its hand-beaded detail and hint of sparkle while Anatoliy looked sharp in his clean black and white tux from Jos A Bank. Junebug member, Map and Compass Photography was the perfect choice to capture every detail–the heartwarming letters to one another before the ceremony, the tear-filled first look, portraits with the pups, and an epic sparkler-lined exit. Keep scrolling if you’re ready to fall in love with this romantic European-inspired day.

The Couple:

Briana and Anatoliy

The Wedding:

Hotel Domestique, Travelers Rest, South Carolina

The Justin Alexander Gown

I was not sure what I wanted when I tried on wedding dresses. I loved long sleeves and the boho look–but I also wanted some glitz and sparkle. My dress was a 1920s inspired, hand-beaded dress with lots of lines and accents. The dress did not come with sleeves, a woman in New York hand designed and made them for me without ever seeing my dress in person. She made my dream dress a reality!

Why the Hotel Domestique

We chose our venue because we were able to have the hotel to ourselves for the whole weekend. It was a small boutique hotel and all the rooms were ours for whoever we wanted. And we loved the European style. We really wanted our family and friends to be able to relax and enjoy the weekend.

Wedding Advice From the Bride

Trust your vision! It is so important to trust the vision you have always had for your wedding. Do not doubt yourself even when others do. A lot of people—even your own family—may question your style. If you trust yourself and your partner, it will all come together the way both of you envisioned. And do not be too hard on yourself! No one can achieve perfection. Nothing in life is perfect; what matters most is that you and your partner are happy. Enjoy the journey.

A Memorable Wedding Bonfire

After the wedding was over, we all gathered around a fire in our wedding attire and talked about how much we enjoyed the day–and we were able to spend time with our closest friends and family.
