Most couples dream of a wedding day that’s absolutely perfect down to the last detail, but for Kaitlin and Jade, there were a few more bumps in the road than for most! This adorable couple got engaged in October and after many details just couldn’t come together they were forced to move their January wedding back to May and start the planning from scratch. They held their simple and intimate wedding at a dear friend’s parents’ house and with the help of family members it all came together beautifully… until they ended up facing one of their biggest challenges on their wedding day itself – a downpour of rain! Luckily Kaitlin and Jade kept it all in perspective and didn’t allow a little rain to dampen their day. They made the most of their time in a way that we love, by using it for amazing wedding portraits with their photographer Benj Haisch! Benj brilliantly took advantage of the glowing light on that overcast day, as well as the various indoor backdrops that the location’s barns and outbuildings provided to create wedding photos that are out of this world, and will no doubt be treasured forever. Kaitlin’s description of the wedding planning experience couldn’t be better, “Through our engagement we knew everything was going to be okay and didn’t want to worry or stress, because it’s not just the planning and decorations that make the wedding. It’s about us: our love, our lives, and starting a new chapter together.”
Thank you so much for sharing your wedding photos with us Kaitlin and Jade!
The Wedding: 5.14.11 – Huron Substation – Los Angeles, California
What three adjectives that best describe your wedding?Personal, relaxed, handmade
What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day?I knew I wanted a vintage dress and James wanted a suit in a 1960s cut, so we let those two things be our initial style inspiration. Location was important and we fell for the Huron Substation right away. I wanted to make sure that the decorations complemented the atmosphere and didn’t take away from the raw beauty. Since I love crafts, I bought fabrics, along with my mother giving me a basket of vintage lace, and started looking what designs I could make with it! We based our invitations on the little post-it note drawings James and I leave for each other. Lucky for me, James was able to draw and design them, as well as the stickers for the favors.
Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? We picked the perfect venue for us and it really made a difference. I felt almost like we didnt have to do anything to it to create a lovely day. The photo booth was a great choice as well. Everyone loved it (even the most reserved family members got in there!) and the book of all the photos we received after the wedding is such a fabulous keepsake. We knew what we wanted and we stuck to it! Im so glad we did because at the end of it all we both felt like we wouldnt have changed a thing. We wrote our own vows and Ill never forget hearing Jamess sweet, personal and emotional words for the first time as we stood in front of our loved ones.
What was your wedding color palette?Natural and neutral colors as a base, with teal, spring green, yellow, and blue accents.
The Goals:Michelle and Jon’s outdoor wedding at Malibu’s Saddlerock Ranch was a masterpiece of rustic elegance and an event focused on FUN for everyone in attendance. “We wanted our wedding to be fun for our guests! We picked a great DJ who spun vinyl, a great caterer for “foodies” – we had hibiscus tea and peppermint thyme spritzers on the way in and warm churros and hot chocolate on the way out. We had a photo booth for people to show their spunky side and of course, a full bar – all the trappings of a great party!”
During the reception, guests found their seats via their adorable mini-succulent garden wedding favors. “The succulents were native to Los Angeles and also doubled as our table assignments so it was an environmentally-conscious choice which I loved. Our invitation designer made lollipop-like sticks with a floral design on the front and our guests’ names on the back – they neatly popped into the rock garden and off they went!” Long wooden dinner tables lined with flowers from Hollyflora and lit from above by twinkling lights in the trees, set the scene for a family style wedding feast!
The Look: Michelle wanted a simple and elegant bridal look, and she found the perfect wedding dress in Vera Wang’s Emily dress. “I loved my dress – there is nothing quite like feeling like a princess in a gown!” Michelle’s bridesmaids wore long navy chiffon dresses from Monique Lhuillier and the groomsmen all wore matching navy suits. Jon looked incredibly dapper in a classic black tuxedo.
The Moments: The most emotional moment of the day for Michelle was simply experiencing the ceremony. “When I held Jon’s hand for the first time at the ceremony all the nervousness rushed out of me and I felt so in love and so lucky and so happy- it was the best day of my life!” Other memorable moments came during the processional as Michelle walked down the aisle with her father, in the joy of having her 90 year old grandfather fly in from New York for the event, and in hearing the toasts that Michelle’s two younger sisters gave that brought the house down!
