What three adjectives best describe your wedding day? Glamorous, Simple and Retro

Was there a decor theme that ran through your wedding? What was the inspiration for that particular idea and how did it reflect you as a couple? Ive always been fascinated by the 1950s and wanted to do something that portrayed the era in a way that was celebratory and classy. We chose to glam up the theme with bold black and whites, and add a pop of lime green for fun. How did the decor reflect us? I think mostly it just conveyed that we are willing to let loose and not take ourselves too seriously!

What were some of the different ways you used decor elements to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning? Because the colors and the theme were pretty bold, we felt like we didnt need to go over the top with the other elements. We really wanted the attire to be the focus and have the details be the accents. I think it ended up working really well.

Where did you choose to hold your wedding, and how did the location influence your decor decisions? My mothers custom craftsman home is so gorgeous. And really, it could be found in the Hamptons and not in the sleepy little town its in! Also, of course the intimacy of a private family home was really key. It was a perfect garden party.

Looking back, do you have a favorite project or successful decor idea from your wedding? Tell us what you loved about it! It was so cool to be able to use the pool as an art piece while also staying consistent with our theme. We used big green balls that drifted over the water. It turned out exactly how I envisioned it, and I am pretty excited about that!

Rustic Chic Outdoor Wedding in Whistler, British Columbia – Meridith and Ben

October 16, 2012 | editorial team

Rather than introduce Meridith and Ben’s wedding day, I’m going to share what Anastasia Chomlack wrote to me when she submitted their Whistler wedding. Because if someone wrote this about me, I would certainly want to read it. What a lovely, lovely sounding bride, and what a lucky, lucky, husband!

From Anastasia – As a photographer this was my favorite wedding. (Are we even allowed to have favorites?!) I think it was the bride, Meridith. she had just come home from being in Brazil working with the poor. She is one of those people that you just fall in love with. She is kind and you could tell everyone loved her…especially her new husband! I feel like it is so often that brides create a wedding that is trendy, but this wedding was so completely her, so authentic to who she is. I loved that!

What adjectives best describe your wedding? Fun, chic, colourful, wild!

What was your wedding color palette? We didnt really have a specific palette – we opted for a mix of colour and fabrics.

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Our vision was to throw a chic but casual party that showcased the beautiful place we call home and brought together great food, wine, music and people! We spend a lot of time playing in the mountains around Whistler and were excited for our friends and family from out of town to experience BC. It took a while to find the right venue but was worth the hunt in the end….Cedarstone had the vibe and flexibility we were looking for. We worked with Whistler Cooks to design an amazing summer menu with local ingredients and picked wine from the Naramata bench – our fave wine region in BC. The style of our wedding was inspired by lots of colour and vintage touches. We wanted to keep it fun and casual, so we ran with the idea of having a vintage garden party. We paid homage to Meridith’s English roots by serving up Pimms and having a string quartet play songs from the Beatles, Zeppelin and other classic UK bands. Doing a DIY wedding at a house was a lot of work but it allowed us to really make the day our own. We hired some incredibly talented people (and enlisted some amazing friends!) to help us pull it off. After seeing how it all turned out, we can’t imagine doing it any other way!

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? It’s hard to pick just a few but some of our favourite highlights include:
-The bear that strolled into the backyard when we were setting up for the ceremony….we love Whistler!
– Pictures in the forest with each other and our best friends before the wedding began
– Playing games on the lawn with a Pimms Cup in hand before dinner – including giant jenga that our friends handmade for us!
– The FOOD! Whistler Cooks was incredible. My favourite was the chocolate cake with lavender cream. Yum!
– Ben’s amazing speech
– Dancing until 3am with our favourite people on the planet!

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Don’t be afraid to be creative and do things your own way, even if it means doing things unconventionally.

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? From the time I was a little girl, I knew I wanted a Father of the Bride wedding. I was very fortunate in that my parents have a beautiful country home with a huge front lawn to put up a big white tent. Dining tables were set with a variety of flowers in pink, blue, ivory, and pops of yellow in antique silver vases and compotes. The white tablecloths were overlaid with a soft floral print of pinks, smokey blue and sea green. The tables glowed with white taper candles in antique silver candle sticks along with mercury glass votive holders. For the bar, my dad built a beautiful white pergola in which we draped white linen sheers adorned with large floral arrangements attached to the sides. With stone steps leading up from the tent, the pergola was the focal point of the reception. Next to the bar was a terrace, surrounded by a newly landscaped floral garden, for cocktail tables clothed in the same linens as the dining tables with smaller floral arrangements in silver julep cups. One of my favorite moments during the reception was going up to the homes white balcony to toss my bouquet.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Family is very important to Alex and I, and thus, we had many of them play different roles in the wedding; from groomsmen and bridesmaids, to altar servers and readers, to ceremony and cocktail musicians. In addition, having my grandmother there to watch me walk down the aisle was one of the highlights. She just passed away last week, but it meant the world to me that she had been there to share in the joyful celebration.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? The guest list is the hardest but most important task to manage. If youre on a budget (arent we all?), keeping the guest list to a minimum is the best way to keep costs down. Also, try not to let the little things stress you out, like last minute RSVP changes, wedding day weather, finding the perfect dress, family drama, etc. This is going to be the best day of your life – you get to marry your best friend, and thats all that really matters.
