Contemporary Seattle Wedding at Olympic Sculpture Park – Rhea and Justin

April 17, 2012 | editorial team

Today’s fabulous celebration was in a sleek, modern setting warmed up with all sorts of personal vintage touches that magically combined to make for one meaningful day! I love that Rhea and Justin carefully considered the meaning behind each step of their ceremony and added unique touches that made the day their very own – doesn’t hurt that they have the cutest car ever either! Enjoy Rhea’s great stories about the day and the beautiful images captured by The Popes!

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding? First, we wanted to select a venue that would have wonderful views and be near the water. We hoped to get the best DJ or band we could find because we really wanted to throw a memorable and fun party. Also, we wanted to include as many personal details as possible, which was the reason that we chose The Olympic Sculpture Park. It’s where we had our first date! It’s also why we included our antique 280SL in the celebration, a gift to my mother from my father when she found out she was pregnant.

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? We chose to walk down the aisle as a couple, as a symbol of our equality entering into our marriage. We also decided to surprise our guests by walking in towards them. Instead of having our backs to them the whole time, we could see their expressions! Another special detail was a small heart-shaped locket I wore in memory of my father to keep him close to my heart.

Were there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? Why and how did you do that? What comes to mind is that we almost got arrested for trespassing when we tried to walk down the aisle! We had to close the area known as Seras Wake, where we would be walking in for the ceremony. However, nobody told the security guard that we would be entering on that side. When we snuck down past our guests to do our surprise entrance we were stopped by security and told, Stop you cant come through here, we are closed for a wedding! At this point the music had already started, our bridal party was in place and all of the guests were waiting. I think both of us were ready to tackle the guard if necessary! Fortunately after my fiance said, Yeah we are the wedding! we just pushed past him and attempted to regain our composure quickly. In the end it became one of our favorite stories about the big day.

What was your biggest wedding planning success? Getting passed that security guard! Oh, and also our wedding dance. I was so proud of my husband for having the guts to step out of the box a little and do a fun dance routine with me. We spent several months taking lessons at Dance Sport International in Lake City and worked with two fantastic dance instructors, Robert and Monique Horuda. We even went to the venue to dance it in the actual space before the big day. It meant so much to me that my husband took the time to learn to dance with me and he looked fantastic on the big day! Everyone was really impressed and my mother was brought to tears.

What was the most important thing that you learned through the wedding planning process and what would you tell other brides-to-be? I did not believe this at the time, but the stuff that goes wrong and the things you don’t plan sometimes make the best memories later. One example, after our wedding reception was over we had a car take us to a park that overlooks Seattle, so that we could have a few quiet moments together before going back to our hotel. When we got to the park there was a party bus there and tons of 20-somethings running around the park. We almost left, but instead decided to get out of the car and take a chance. The moment the people saw us we were showered with attention! They picked us up and carried us around, told me how beautiful I looked and took photos with us like we were movie stars! It was insane (in a good way). Also it was a total surprise and nothing we could have ever planned or purchased. Sometimes the best moments in life are free!

Sophisticated Winter Wedding at Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC – Emilie and Chase

April 16, 2012 | editorial team

After attending a lot of sunny, warm summer weddings, January could have scared off less adventurous, optimistic couples than Emilie and Chase. But for this chic and stylish pair, it inspired a wedding filled with wintery sparkles in a striking art museum venue. Key to making this cold winter month work was warming up their guests with a rockin’ band that was hot all night. The happy couple’s reward for giving January a chance? A blissful 65 degree day!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding? Fun, chic and fancy

What was your wedding color palette? The basic color palette was deep purple, chocolate brown and winter white, with some sparkle thrown in. These shades were inspired by a peacock feather we used for the “save the dates.”

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? I was not one of those girls who had my wedding planned out for years. Ive seen a lot of beautiful weddings in outdoor venues with romantic color palettes and brides in boots, but this was not me! I wanted the feel of our wedding to be current, sophisticated and unique, while also embracing the month of January. We have been to so many spring and summer weddings and wanted to have an event to remember, which is why we chose January in the first place! Plus, the fact that we had a 65 degree sunny day was awesome.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Oh, wow, it was a bit of a blur! Pulling up to our reception and seeing our slide show on the huge screen on the side of the building was VERY cool, and our guests kept talking about it! We had a fabulous band who kept the party going all night long; hiring them was one of the best decisions.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Hire a planner! You will undoubtedly be less stressed the weeks leading up to the big day. Not having to fool around with vendors, contracts and logistics the weekend of the wedding was priceless! Also, unless you have a very specific venue or time of year in mind, you really dont need more than eight months to prepare.

The Goals: Claire and Marcus imagined their wedding day as intimate, romantic, and magical; with their closest family and friends surrounding them. The historic San Ysidro Ranch was full of romance and charm, and an elaborate dinner party for their 30 guests proved to be the perfect way for everyone to slow down and enjoy each other’s company.

The Design: For Claire and the talented design team from La Fete, romance was the name of the game! This meant sparkly chandeliers and crystals, blush and champagne hues, lush flowers with ruffly petals, and lace, lace, lace! La Fete had custom champagne lace toppers made for the tables, and wrapped hurricanes in the material as well. The lace reappeared again on the cake design and in the detailing on the custom dark chocolate menus that were a nod to her father’s love of chocolate.

The Look: Claire’s bridal look was all about classic elegance and more romance. The fitted column of her dress was embellished with a small flower detail on the bodice and pleated ruffle on the hem. She wore her gorgeous long hair loose and soft, and complemented her look with classic pearls and understated jewels.

The Moments: The day was filled with so many romantic moments and love! The couple loved stolen moments of quiet time together strolling through the gardens of the San Ysidro Ranch. The intimate ceremony in the ranch’s beautiful courtyard, with their most beloved friends and family there in support, was deeply meaningful and special. Tim Lopez of Plain White T’s is the son of planner Colette Lopez of La Fete, and he treated to them to a performance of “The Rhythm of Love” as the walked down the aisle. But by far, the most unforgettable moment was a fun surprise they planned for their guests. Claire and Marcus found out they were expecting a boy, just days before the wedding. They kept the good news a secret from everyone, and then made the big announcement with bright blue frosting in between the layers of their wedding cake. It prompted another round of cheers and celebrating, in a day filled with amazing memories in the making!
