What Makes Winter Weddings Special

Winter weddings can be so special as you are inviting guests to celebrate with you during a magical and intimate time of year. With the weather being chilly and the holiday festivities gone, guests will love a reason to celebrate, especially if involves two favorite people tying the knot.

If you are considering saying We Do in the winter, think carefully about where to get married at. This will set the tone for your weekend and whether your wedding is a weekend-long festivity or getaway or a single-day soiree. Do you love the slopes or prefer a city ballroom? Do you envision an outdoor ceremony in the elements? Consider what your guests will be experiencing during the wedding {will they be indoors in the warmth with beautiful views of the ocean or will you be asking them to trek through a field in the snow?} to be sure your vision matches up with reality.

Choosing Your Venue

A winter wedding venue should have ample power {for back-up generators}, sufficient parking, a warm ambiance, and ideally a central location to make travel easy for guests. If you envision a destination getaway nestled in the snowy mountains, be sure that you venue can accommodate all of your guests for lodging. If your venue is out of town, check first to ensure they will be amply staffed in the off-season {unless it is considered peak season for the venue, like a ski lodge}.

Your Winter Wedding Timeline

Keep in mind that the sun will set around five o’clock in the evening. Think about what this means for your ceremony time and whether you have a backdrop that requires the natural light or has a sweeping view. Add extra travel time to get to your location{s} and in between in case of traffic delays or inclement weather. Work with your photographer and planning team to map out a timeline that works around the sunset and late afternoon winter light.

Winter Wedding Fashion

Tulle can be fun and fresh for bridesmaids, especially when paired with cashmere cardigans and pearl cluster necklaces or big brooches. A bride can really have fun with patterns: why not don a plaid flannel stoll or scarf or even fun galoshes for photos? Consider the tone of your skin during the winter months and accentuate that accordingly – some bright hues can make one look washed out in photos, whereas others can be quite complementary.

Choosing Your Winter Wedding Color Palette

Crisp and clean winter color stories with tones of silvers, pale icy blues and shades of cream and white, are some of our favorites as they feel so fresh after the holidays. But we also love to see deep romantic palettes that draw in dramatic hues like cranberry and deep enchanting pinks. For an unexpected color pairing, we can’t get enough of mustard, cream, silver, and evergreen. Totally fresh and a classic pairing.

Keep Your Guests Cozy

Guest comfort is really key in creating a warm and memorable winter wedding. If you’re anticipating a crisp outdoor ceremony, set up a crackling fire for guests to cozy up around pre- and post-ceremony. Stock the ceremony seating with plaid blankets, wool hats and cashmere gloves, and welcome guests to nestle in together on vintage pews or velvet couches. Add authentic s’mores fixings and you have instant winter fun!

A tea and espresso cart, manned by a pro, would warm up guests when they arrive. Pair the beverages with freshly baked cookies or biscotti. Warm cocktails like hot toddies, spike cocoa, egg nog, and mulled ciders served in copper mugs would be a big hit!

Thank you so much to Aleah and Nick for all of this extremely helpful advice! If you’re planning a winter wedding, check out Bridget and Tom’s Cozy Winter Wedding for more inspiration for your big day.

Blush and Pink Wedding in Sudbury, Ontario

December 18, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

Rebecca-and-Kyle-Blush-and-Pink-Wedding-Shauna-Heron-24

There’s something so timelessly chic about a bride with red lipstick, a stunning veil, and a vintage inspired gown. Rebecca certainly accomplished the vintage, romantic look she was aiming for in her blush and pink wedding. With the help of a fabulous team of professionals, Rebecca and Kyle’s day was simple, elegant, and filled with laughter and joy! Junebug member, Shauna Heron documented the pair’s soft, delicate wedding with skill and mastery.

The Couple: Rebecca and Kyle

The Wedding: Bryston’s on the Park , Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

The Inspiration: “I wanted to have a vintage, romantic look. This fit well with the colours we went with (blush pink, gold, and ivory) and with the lace dress I knew I wanted. This also inspired the silhouette of my dress (cap sleeves rather than strapless), the long dresses of the bridesmaids, and my cathedral veil. It also helped us come up with our favours, old fashioned glass bottles of Coca-Cola, which fit with the theme and tied in Kyle‘s love of the drink.

The Moments: “My favourite moment of the wedding was when we were up in front of our friends and family, sharing our vows. My husband had not cried in eight years, but he teared up while making his promises to me. To have finally reached that moment after six years together was wonderful.

(It was very hard to narrow this down to just one thing, because our entire wedding pretty much went off without a hitch! Other than almost forgetting the boutonnieres and the weather, everything went as planned.)”

The Couple Recommends: “All of our vendors were easy to work with, but Shauna, Bryston’s, and Red’s DJ all went above and beyond. We had guests compliment us on all of their work and even had people say they would use the same vendors if they get married in Sudbury. All three vendors were also extremely prompt with their replies and made sure to get to know what our guests would be like and what our desires were before the day of our wedding. I have nothing but good things to say about all of them.”

The Wedding Team:

Peruvian Museum Wedding

December 17, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

Lima wedding

Having your wedding in the destination of your dreams can mean not only a beautiful venue, but the most breathtaking views of the surrounding city. Melisa and Chris were inspired by the city of Lima for their Peruvian museum wedding. The city made for the most stunning backdrop as the couple embraced for the first time as newlyweds. Brandon Wong Photography captured the most artistic and intriguing images throughout the day, from the traditional ceremony to the party of the century.

The Couple: Melisa and Chris

The Wedding: Musea de Arte de Lima, Lima, Peru

The Inspiration:The city of Lima was the main inspiration for the wedding. Lima is known for its colonial architecture, rich history and delicious food. The Museum of Art of Lima is one of the most well preserved colonial buildings and we were lucky enough to have hour wedding there. During our wedding, the museum was decorated to enhance its beauty. The menu was created with traditional limeñan dishes. Overall, we wanted to create an atmosphere that was elegant and fun.

The Moments:“La hora loca”, a limeñan wedding tradition, is an explosion of fun, fantasy and entertainment. It starts with confetti falling from the sky. Guests dress up with different props and dance with folkloric Peruvian characters such as Inkas, stilt walkers and guinea pig mascots. It is an hour of non-stop dancing and craziness. Words can’t fully capture the moment.

The Couple Recommends:Brandon and Katrina Wong. They not only took beautiful photographs, but also were loved by our families and have become good friends.
