This Couple Made Their Own Traditions in Their Whitewater State Park Wedding

September 24, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

Katie and Josh knew that they wanted their wedding to be unique, so they skipped the unity candle and forged new traditions! The couple’s emotional ceremony at Whitewater State Park began with Katie being walked down the aisle by both of her parents and ended with hymns sung by their friends while Katie and Josh painted the Hebrew word for “love” on a canvas. During the reception, the couple even served their fave chocolate chip cookies instead of a cake! Photographer Eastlyn Bright captured the couple’s vintage woodland wedding beautifully. If Katie and Josh look familiar to you, it’s because we shared their Chicago engagement photos with you last year!

The Wedding:

Whitewater State Park, Altura, Minnesota

When planning our wedding, we wanted to be sure that we thought purposefully about what each aspect of the day represented. We didn’t want to stick with tradition simply for the sake of tradition. It was really important and worth the time to think critically about all the details that some take for granted.

The ceremony encompassed all of the meaning of the day, which is why it was the most memorable part for both of us.

this-couple-made-their-own-traditions-in-their-whitewater-state-park-wedding-33

It was really important for Joshua and I to be married at a place that felt like us. We’ve always loved camping and so getting married at a camp felt so natural. There were cabins there too which made us immediately think, “huge slumber party!” Our family and friends were able to stay with us in the days leading up to the wedding so the whole event felt like one huge, long, joyous party.

I walked down the aisle with both of my parents, as they both have equally loved and supported me in my life and relationship with Joshua. Our friend gave a sermon that reminded us of the foundation of our love, Jesus Christ.

Three of our dear friends led our guests in beautiful hymns of worship as Josh and I painted the word “Hesed” on a canvas together. Joshua and I each wrote out unique vows, and said them, through smiles and tears, to one another.

Eastlyn and Josh felt less like photographers and more like friends – really artistic, creative, and fun friends. We never felt awkward or imposed upon and taking a hike with them to the rocky overlook actually ended up being one of the most relaxing and needed parts of the whole day. It was the perfect way for Joshua and I to step back from the craziness of the wedding for a little bit and simply enjoy being in each other’s presence.

We advise those who are planning a wedding to take a moment to thoroughly think through all of the traditions and aspects of a wedding day that you think need to be included or done a certain way. We did this, and when we look back on our wedding day, we don’t regret not having a cake, doing a bouquet toss, or lighting a unity candle. Instead, we gleam with joy in remembering doing a unity painting together, saying our own vows to one another, and eating chocolate chip cookies at the dance. Your wedding day should represent the two of you and the love you share.

Our wedding vibe honestly flowed straight out of our personalities. We love community and celebration so we knew we wanted lots of people and lots of dancing and games. We’re also very laid back so we knew we wanted the wedding to feel more like a party and less like a traditional affair. The whole day ended up being very emotional in a genuine and happy way.

Jaw-Dropping Stormy Anniversary Shoot on Mount Crandell

September 23, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

jaw-dropping-stormy-anniversary-shoot-mount-crandell-14

There’s nothing quite like a romantic photo shoot to honor your anniversary, and this couple’s dark and stormy Mount Crandell shoot is no exception! After Nicole and Nadim hiked up the Alberta mountainside with Riana Lisbeth Photography for their anniversary session, storm clouds began to brew. The adventurous couple embraced the impending rain and let their sparks fly against the naturally moody backdrop! We love how Nicole wore her Maggie Sottero wedding gown and even crafted a gorgeous pink bouquet as a throwback to her wedding day style.

We Love How This Couple Incorporated Their Dog Into Their Asheville Wedding

September 23, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

we-love-how-this-couple-incorporated-their-dog-into-their-asheville-wedding-36

Once Kristin and Grayson decided on having an organic and relaxed wedding, it made total sense for them to also incorporate their dog Lucy in the festivities! Kristin and Grayson’s dog accompanied them down the aisle, stood loyally next to them during the ceremony, and was incredibly photogenic during the couple’s portraits by the lake. This couple’s Asheville wedding at Claxton Farm featured tons of delicate florals, naturally romantic décor with a hint of rustic flair, and even a s’mores fire pit and outdoor games to lighten the mood. We love how Hartman Outdoor Photography captured every detail of Kristin and Grayson’s wedding!

The Wedding:

Claxton Farm, Asheville, North Carolina

Creating a fun and relaxed natural environment was most important for us during our wedding planning. We wanted our guests to enjoy the outdoors and we didn’t want any decorations getting in the way.

we-love-how-this-couple-incorporated-their-dog-into-their-asheville-wedding-16

We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding in a location that is special to us. We love the atmosphere and vibe of Asheville, we love hiking and the outdoors, and it happens to be where we got engaged. We chose Claxton Farms because it showcases the natural beauty of the mountains while still providing a comfortable and accessible environment for all of our guests.

We had our dog Lucy as part of our ceremony. Lucy walked down the aisle with me and my father and she stayed with us during most of the ceremony. We also included her in most of our pictures–of course this meant that nothing was scripted, but that’s how we liked it!

we-love-how-this-couple-incorporated-their-dog-into-their-asheville-wedding-27

Within the ceremony, we decided to take a few seconds to look out at our guests, our surroundings, and each other to simply take it all in and better process that momentous occasion in our lives. So many people told us that our wedding day would pass in an instant and we didn’t want to forget to be appreciative for the love and support we have been so fortunate to experience in our lives, and everything that came together that day. Seeing everyone we care about together with the beautiful surroundings created what will undoubtedly be a life-long memory.

Our wedding photographers were amazing in both talent, creativity, and demeanor. Josh and Shelley Hartman were calm and collected on our wedding day, making sure that we got all of the photos we wanted while also having fun!

we-love-how-this-couple-incorporated-their-dog-into-their-asheville-wedding-7

If you get overwhelmed with details, think about the things that really matter to you: what you want to get out of your wedding day (i.e. the “big picture”), how you want your guests to feel, and prioritize those things. It may help to think back to characteristics you remember from the weddings that you may have previously attended for inspiration–both for things you like and those you don’t. Chances are, you won’t be able to recall the color of the napkins or even the flowers. Always take time to step back and look at the big picture before devoting time and money to the little details.

we-love-how-this-couple-incorporated-their-dog-into-their-asheville-wedding-23

We wanted our wedding to be relaxed and fun. A few ways that we incorporated this feeling were that we did not assign tables (i.e. promoting mixed groups), the food was served family-style and we had plenty of outdoor games to play to create a sense of togetherness on our special day.
