This Couple Celebrated Their 7th Anniversary with an Urban Adventure Vow Renewal in Portland, Oregon

January 26, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

s

If Eliesha and Joel’s adventure vow renewal is any indication, a good marriage keeps getting sweeter — and maybe a little quirkier — with time! The Australian couple, who traveled to North America for an epic road trip from Portland to Manitoba, threw out any form of convention and celebrated their 7th wedding anniversary in the most Portland way possible: with a vow renewal at the famously funky Voodoo Doughnuts, witnessed by the coolest best man ever: Rojo the Llama. We’re still not sure how they fit 4 humans and a llama into that tiny doughnut shop, but these photos from Jamie Carle Photography are proof they had the time of their lives making it work!

Portland was the inspiration for this whole vow renewal extravaganza, but the adventure planning started with polar bears. We decided that this was the year we’d check a big one of our bucket lists: seeing polar bears in the wild. After a bit of research it seemed that Churchill, Manitoba is the place to do that, so Canada it was! Being Australian, there’s just no way we’re ever going to fly to North America for just a week or two — it’s way too far! So we decided a 6-week road trip was in order. There’s nothing either of us love better than a good old fashioned road trip!

Last time we road tripped across America we went East to West, but we didn’t make it as far as the Pacific Northwest and it was an area we’d always been keen to visit. So we decided on a West to East drive this time, and Portland was high on the list of places to visit. In my research, I stumbled across the fact that Voodoo Doughnuts does wedding ceremonies and it seemed like a dream come true. We always wanted to elope and thought about getting married by Elvis in Vegas. But a doughnut shop wedding suddenly shot straight to the top of my to-do list!

We found Rojo the Llama thanks to the incomparable Jamie Carle Photography. I spent months scouring Instagram looking for someone I could trust to take photos of us. The vibe I got from her Instagram was exactly what I was looking for — adventurous, creative and inclusive, not to mention super rad photog skills. I got chatting with Jamie over email about pretend weddings, Portland, and Goat Yoga, and she mentioned that she may have access to a llama…things just kind of spiraled from there! It was also perfect that the traditional wedding gift for 7 years is wool — so Rojo fitted right in! Joel knew I had organized a “witness” but he didn’t know who (or what) it was. We were waiting outside Voodoo Doughnuts for our “special guest” to arrive, and I was imagining that a horse trailer was going to appear. Then Shannon pulled up with Rojo in the back of a minivan — it was amazing! Rojo was an angel, and he absolutely made our day!

Our officiant was Wally from Voodoo Doughnuts — he was amazing. He wore a lion mask as a hat, wrote our “sports chant” vows, and made the foam fingers (they were actually cardboard) by painting pictures of us from our OG wedding. He also made our custom bride and groom doughnuts — and even made a Rojo doughnut!

Rojo was a prince. I (Joel) had no idea he was coming, and I was so excited to meet him. He looked so handsome and was our perfect best man and witness. Basically, Shannon handed us his rein and said, “He’s yours for the day. Take him wherever you like.” So we brought him into Voodoo Doughnuts with us. I miss his smile every day.

We sincerely hope that if you asked someone who knows us to describe a perfect day for us it would involve getting pretend married at a doughnut shop by a man wearing a lion mask with a llama as our best man followed by an afternoon of goat yoga. This is us.

7 years in marriage has a bit of a curse on it (7 year itch), so what better way to keep the curse away then to go all out rad wedding under the blessed voodoo spirit of Isaac Hayes? We’re officially double married now, so it’s impossible to get rid of each other!

My (Joel’s) awesome shirt was a vintage find in Melbourne, and the rest was just stuff I pulled out of the suitcase on the day. I was pretty happy with my Armani Exchange aviators though; I bought them especially for this road trip.

My (Eliesha’s) dress and shoes were both Gorman, which is a Melbourne label. I worked for Gorman as my first job in the fashion industry — I’m a kids-wear designer now — and it’s still my favorite label. It’s called the Eliza Day dress and it’s from a collection about four years ago. I always thought it would make an amazing wedding dress, and this was my opportunity!

Low-Key Western Cape Outdoor Festival Wedding at Karoo One

January 26, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Estée and Bert’s South African wedding at Karoo One had serious contemporary outdoor festival vibes, and we can’t stop staring! With the help of the farm’s owners — who converted nearly every space to be fit for a wedding — and their tribe of loved ones, the couple created a magical weekend that was inspired by the groom’s farm roots and infused with the bride’s big city style. With just a few simple details, such as floral hoops, string lights, wine barrels, and mismatched seating areas, they transformed the natural landscape into a stylish lounge that was perfect for dancing until the early morning hours. Grace Charlotte Photography outdid herself capturing every special moment and unique angle of this wedding, but she went above and beyond with the couple’s epic cliffside and desert portraits!

The Couple:

Estée and Bert

The Wedding:

Karoo One, Western Cape, South Africa

The most important thing was that we wanted our wedding to represent the both of us — modern farm boy meets city chic girl. Because I was marrying a Karoo (semi-desert) farmer, I wanted a venue that looked like my future home. Finding this gem, Karoo One, was perfect. We planned the wedding to make the most of this absolutely astonishing landscape.

Originally, we wanted to get married on my husband’s farm, Knoffelfontein (“Garlic Fountain”), in the Karoo. Bert grew up on the farm and it’s where we’ll be starting our life together. Unfortunately, it posed a few too many challenges. One day I came across Karoo One and it reminded me so much of the farm that I thought it was perfect! I immediately sent my mom and hubby-to-be the photos. When we finally visited, my mom realized she had been there a few years before and had told her husband that one of her daughters would get married there someday!

We wanted our wedding to be an informal, weekend festival with family and friends. Given the spectacular scenery, we used nature as the event decorator. We wanted everything to be outside. The venue has a chapel and reception area, but we had other plans. The owners were so intrigued, they actually agreed to convert the river bed into a lounge-style reception and dance area, the sheep grazing fields into a kitchen, the vineyard into a glamping site, the winery into the groom’s dressing area, and the gorge dam area into a ceremony area.

The pre-wedding crew of friends and family arrived a couple of days before the wedding. We spent these few days sharing lots of laughter and tequila while crafting all the wedding details. We made a copper frame with a canvas wedding logo, directional signs, rose gold hula hoops, and our 1.5-meter long wedding cake!

Because most of the wedding guests were accommodated on the Karoo One Guest Farm, we started the weekend festival with a traditional South-African spitbraai (whole lamb on rotisserie).

Saturday morning we had an early morning yoga session, overlooking the rocky mountain range, and later that morning we did a wine tasting on the farm. By 3:30 all the guests started the few hundred meter stroll through the valley to the gorge ceremony area. Following the ceremony, the guests strolled a further few hundred meters to the cleared out river bed area, where we all celebrated till the early morning hours.

As a gift for Bert, I had 40 polaroids from our engagement shoot printed. On each one, I wrote a reason why I love him, and we hung them in our gift shack.

I had an outfit change before our first dance that only my mom and aunt knew about. Bert and all the guests were so surprised!

This Dark Massachusetts Wedding at Turner Hill Didn’t Shy Away from Spooky Details

January 25, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Who knew you could transform a golf club and estate into a magically spooky wedding? With the help of event designer, By Emily B.Turner Hill was made into the moody wedding of Lauren and Corey’s dream! From the lush florals also designed by By Emily B. and the many fruits incorporated into centerpieces, there is a wave of rich colors throughout the entire space. We are so into the details that went into Lauren and Corey’s day, especially Corey’s black velvet skull loafers! The Spragues unique eye and use of composition added to the moody vibe that was so evident all day.

The Couple:

Lauren and Corey

The Wedding:

Turner Hill, Ipswich, Massachusetts

From their wedding designer: Lauren and Corey have incredibly unique personalities. They are intensely creative and talented individuals who know what they want. They are driven in their careers and know how to trust other professionals to get the job done, which is exactly what we did. They also love twiggy, haunted, dark, velvety and spooky things, so as their designer, that was super fun! They wanted their day to be a true testament to who they are, that was probably the most important thing.

The Spragues are amazing! They are fun, personable, and deeply talented.

From Corey, the groom: Hire an event design team that can tell your story through the details, bringing your vision to life.

Corey‘s sister Jenna acted as their officiant, bonding the two in marriage, which was really, really special. She is a beautiful individual, incredibly well-spoken, and seeing them wed by a family member was so cool.

Mansion at Turner Hill has this totally spooky vibe. It is incredibly old and incredibly special with a very rich history.

We went with a dark twist on jewel tones, deep cranberry, emerald, navy, black, and gold.

From Corey, the groom: My most memorable part was near the end. Lauren and I snuck out for ten minutes to spend some time alone. We were standing out back, looking at the mansion, which had been so beautifully transformed, watching all our friends and loved ones dancing and drinking and laughing and celebrating. To stand there with my wife and see all the people that had come together to celebrate our love was such an incredibly special moment.
