Everyone has their own special love affair with music, and because it plays a role in everyone’s life, it of course plays a huge role at weddings. Whether you’re excited about slow dancing to Sam Cooke, cranking up the Kanye or watching your grandma bust a move to The Beatles, everyone’s got their own personal musical style! We’ve had music on the mind at Junebug lately, so we’ve decided to open up the conversation, share the love, and give away our favorite music gadget, the iPod Nano! Seriously, look how cute those are!
Let us know about the song you’ve chosen for your first dance as husband and wife (or the many songs you’re considering!) and we’ll randomly choose a lucky winner from the bunch next week. Good luck!
We are debating between “The Light” by Mason Jennings, “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michalson and “Today” by Joshua Radin. I think we might have people vote on which song they want played.
we’re both actors and we didn’t set out to choose something too musical theatre-y, but we keep coming back to “why do i love you” from the musical showboat. the words are simple and dear and for some reason, the song keeps popping up around us. another option is “the best is yet to come”
We’re torn between “The Promise” by Tracy Chapman and “Stay with You” by John Legend
We used a duet version of the song “When you say nothing at all” sung by Ronan Keating and Paulina Rubio. Part of this version of the song is sung in English and part of it is sung in Spanish. Many of the members of my husband’s family only speak spanish, so this song allowed us to use one of our favorite songs as well as make all our guests feel recognized and appreciated.
Right now the primary contender is “The Promise” by Tracy Chapman. Also love “Songbird” by Eva Cassidy…would be our first dance if a friend hadn’t claimed it first (she introduced me to E.C., so a very fair claim)!
We’re leaning toward You are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne. It is such a great song. I would love to throw on my cowboy boots to More Where That Came From by Dolly Parton, but I think I got a no vote on that one!
Well, it’s tough because I’ve always wanted to do a tango first dance because of my heritage, so I was thinking a Spanish guitar version of something. However, we first bonded over a Jimmy Eat World song, and so I guess you could say that that’s kind of our song, but it’s a little on the sadder side, so I don’t think it’d be very appropriate for the first dance. We’re both also huge Frank Sinatra fans, so maybe something by him. I don’t know, I guess we’re just going to have to sit down and maybe come up with a combination of things…
“Two of Us” –either Aimee Mann & Michael Penn or the original Beatles version
We’ve chosen “I Was Made for You” by She & Him (aka Zooey Deschanel’s album).
My fiance and I are both Taiwanese, so we are going to dance to a Taiwanese song called “Forever Love” by Wang Leehom. He’s a very famous singer in Taiwan and had a cameo in Ang Lee’s movie Lust, Caution.
We picked “all i want is you” by barry louis polisar… which is the intro song to the movie Juno. I remember buying the soundtrack and driving with the fiance and when we first listened through the song, we decided right then it was our first song!! Thanks for the opportunity.
We’re leaning towards ‘I love you for sentimental reasons’ by Nat King Cole, but I would absolutely LOVE to dance to Hey Love by Stevie Wonder! Maybe I can talk my fiance into it…
We have chosen “Fly me to the moon” with Fran Sinatra and I was really flying in that moment
My fiance and I love the message of the song ‘Save the Last Dance’ – the idea of only ‘giving our heart’ to each other while maintaining a sense of fun. The freedom AND commitment perfectly expresses the relationship we want to create. We also like that the Michael Buble version is upbeat and so, different. Though we’re both really sentimental, we’re not traditional in our romance and would much rather cha-cha for our first dance than a slow back and forth. Just talking about it makes me want to dance!!
Amazed by Lonestar will be our first dance together. Represents how we feel about each other.
“This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies
We’re dancing to Jason Wade’s (from Lifehouse) version of “You Belong to Me” from the Shrek Soundtrack!
Our first song will be “Happy Together” by The Turtles. It is definitely perfect for us, but I am kind of wondering how we will dance on it… We’ll figure it out because we are not changing song! Thanks for the great giveaway.
I like out of the box songs like Satelite by Guster.
We are dancing to Gwen Stefani’s The Real Thing. We hear it together at a concert a few years ago and loved it! We are doing a dramatic opening, and then going into a hustle!
We’re still a ways away from nailing down our first song, but my fiance does have a secret thing for Brian Adams — he even serenaded me with Everything I Do at karaoke not that long ago. That might be just too embarrassing though…
We are considering the following: “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness, “The Colour Of Your Love” by Celine Dion or “As Long As Your Mine” from the Wicked soundtrack. Yeah, we’ve got some variety.
We’re dancing to Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours.
We chose If I Were A Carpenter – the version by Johnny Cash & June Carter
I think we’re going to dance to Billy Corgan’s cover of Billie Holiday’s “Always.” Not only is my fiance a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, but the song was featured on one of our favorite shows, “Dead Like Me.” When Mandy Patinkin sings it, it is so full of meaning. When my fiance sings it, I cry!
I have German roots and will marry my Belgian fiancé in may. In Germany the first dance is traditionally a Waltz, so we have chosen a Waltz from a very famous Belgian singer to combine the two elements. Title of the song is “You are the reason” by Koen Wauters feat. Zita.
We haven’t figured this out yet, but here are a couple of the front-runners: The Luckiest by Ben Folds Magic by Colby Caillat Come Away with Me by Nora Jones
Ron Sexsmith – Wastin’ time, when we heard it we both just knew it should be our first dance
Michael Bublé, Everything. We love the part about the line in the sand :) Thanks for offering this giveaway!
Tupelo Honey- Vann Morrison!
Michael Buble’s You and I or Home
We chose “The Wonder of You” by Elvis Presley! :)
Nothing set in stone yet, but I woke up this morning to visions of us waltzing to “Once Upon a Dream” from the Disney’s Sleeping Beauty… we’ll see if that one makes the final cut or not though.
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Early on when we started dating, my fiance serenaded me with this song, so when we were trying to figure out a first dance song, it didn’t take us very long to settle on this one!
I am still really trying to get my fiance to learn the moves from the Napoleon Dynamite dance scene. I think it would be awesome to bust this out at the reception!
Ok, these first dance songs are FABULOUS! Keep em coming people! You rock!
We will be dancing to Mary Chapin Carpenter’s version of “Grow old along with me”. With her haunting voice and those meaningful lyrics, I’m sure it will be very emotional!
We’re going with an oldie but a goodie – God Only Knows by the Beach Boys.
We are thinking “All I want is you” by Barry Louis Polisar from the movie Juno. “If you were a wink, I’d be a nod
If you were a seed, well I’d be a pod.
If you were the floor, I’d wanna be the rug
And if you were a kiss, I know I’d be a hug” SOOOOO CUTE!!
Our first dance will be to “Today” by the Smashing Pumpkins!
We chose Lionel Richie’s “I Call it Love” because it’s a beautiful song. We’re also going to have my sister play the guitar and his cousin sing Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly” as an additional song.
We’re considering doing our first dance to a song by The Gufs — a mostly local band that is close to our hearts. We’ve seen several of their concerts together, and at the last concert, my soon-to-be husband slipped his hand in my back pocket and said “I want to dance with you to this song as husband and wife.” swoon.
We are dancing to “Everything” by michael buble!
Our first dance song will be “True Love Ways” by Buddy Holly. An oldie but goodie :)
We’re playing “Brighter than Sunshine” by Aqualung. It’s has a great beat for slow dancing too :).
my fiance has decided that he would like us to dance to michael jackson’s “don’t stop til you get enough”. he is not a big dancer like i am, so i am so excited that he is willing to venture out of his comfort zone
I like “Everything” by Michael Buble but we’re considering some other less popular options as well. We may not decide until the day before – who knows!
When You Say Nothing At All by Alison Krauss. My husband is a country fan, but I’m more lukewarm to country. We both love the movie “Notting Hill” and decided that the music from the movie would be a perfect first dance song. Plus, my husband is on the quieter side, so the song really is fitting.
bendita la luz by mana and juan luis guerra…awesome love song (in spanish)
John Prine’s The Glory of True Love
We are dancing to “Waste” by Phish. A dream its true But Id see it through If I could be Wasting my time with you
We’re dancing to Hold On by Tom Waits. It’s been our song since the beginning and I can’t wait to get out on the dance floor with my beau and sway to it.
We chose “At Last” by Etta James (ages before the First Couple danced to it 10 times in one evening). We are both “older” than the average bride and groom and we kissed so many frogs on our way to finding eachother…
The Luckiest by Ben Folds immediately followed by my singing “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. Reception + Karaoke = Awesome Fun!
We’re using Nina Simone’s version of “Here Comes the Sun.” The song is a simple classic pop tune, and Nina Simone pretty much makes any good song better. Plus, it sounds cheesy, but we both feel like the sun finally came out when we came into each others lives.
Front runner: “Long Way Home” – Tom Waits.
We are going to dance to “From this moment” by Shanie Twain and Brian White…unless he is brave enough to say no to it :)
We are most likely going with You are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne
“Time in a bottle” by Jim Croche. It is SO sweet…..love that song!
First Dance: “Stick with me Baby” by Robert Plant & Allison Krause. We are actually planning special music through the ceremony too. Walking down the aisle to: “Love” by John Lennon and after the ceremony: “All you need is love”-Beatles! Music is so important to us both we are spedning a lot of time picking the best songs for everything! We want it to represent us and our love for each other!
With the big day coming up we still need to choose the first song. So far the list includes – I’ll always be right there (Bryan Adams), But I do Love you (Leann Rimes) , Better Together (Jack Johnson) or Dreaming (Melissa Tallon). I am sure that we will end up choosing something totally left field but at least we have started to narrow it down!!
We’ve decided on Better Together by Jack Johnson. His special ringtone on my phone is “Banana Pancakes” and when we first started dating I would go see his band which covered a lot of Jack’s songs; we thought this one very appropriate.
Right now, we’re thinking “You and I” by Michael Buble. That song melts my heart everytime!
So Nice (Summer Samba) – Bebel Gilberto… my husband lived in Brazil and we love Brazilian music… the song is about finding someone with which to samba through life… the basic lyrics go: “So nice, life would be so nice If one day I’d find Someone who would take my hand And samba through life with me”
We’re using “Always Will Be Yours” by T.J. McCloud. We love the fact that it’s not something everyone will have heard before and also that the lyrics are so simple but beautiful!
This is one of the first things we decided on! Since we love to dance and our families love to watch us we’re going to play a little trick on them. We’ll start out with “Look at You Girl” by Chris LeDoux (and they’ll be bummed we’re just doing the standard slow dance) until the final dip turns into him flinging me out and we’ll start rocking to Our Song, Shooter Jenning’s “4th of July”. It’s going to be so much fun!
i think we are using “a kiss to build a dream on” by louis armstrong. we both love louis’ voice and try to sing like him to each other :)
We’re dancing to “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie. It’s a song about super deep levels of commitment, with super intricate metaphors and super beautiful melodies. It’s a little somber but too special to us to pass up. We would be dancing to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Callait if he hadn’t told me that he realized we were meant to be while listening to “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” at a Death Cab contert 6 months prior to our engagement.
This is easy. My wife and I love Robbie Robertson, so our first dance was to “Broken Arrow”, off of his self-titled album. Sniff.
Corny, I know, but we’ll be dancing to “If I didn’t have you”-Randy Travis. I love that it’s not a “slow” slow song, and it’s great in that we always joke that even if we broke up, we’d always end up back together once we realized what we were missing! (We call it spoiled-puppy love ie. spoil the dog enough that they’ll never wander off the yard for fear of missing out on all those puppy treats and belly scratches). Also it was nice to find a song that didn’t imply a “new” love (we’ve been together 8.5 years!)
A friend of ours sung “I Want to Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer. It was beautiful and so personal! The lyrics could be changed to fit us, but Adam Sandler’s were near perfect anyways :).
“I’m in Love” by Geoff Byrd. The lyrics get me every time!
Happiness is you. Johnny Cash. So excited for it!
We are dancing to “A Wink and A Smile” by Harry Conick Jr. We love that jazzy crooner feel it has, so very us! Plus, who doesn’t need a tuba solo in their first dance!?!
We’ve chosen Jack Johnsons Better Together because we have truly found that we are better at dealing with all of life’s curveballs together
Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” will be our wedding song. Cute, sweet and not too sappy!
We are trying to decide between “We are Man and Wife” by Michelle Featherstone, “You are the Best Thing” by Ray Lamontagne or “For Me It’s You” by Train
For our first dance we have chosen Bob Marley’s “Is this love”. This song tied together my fiances love of Bob Marley’s music and my idea of a nice song that we can sway to as we dance, plus when you listen to the lyrics they are so perfect.
My fiance LOVES oldies so we’re thinking about “Always and Forever.”
“Ice Cream” by Sarah McLachlan interrupted by “Unbelievable” by EMF. Both my fiance and sister know how to break dance (card board and all). We just can’t pass up the opportunity!
We haven’t even decided yet. We don’t have a song and it’s just hard to find one! We’re looking at L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole, Everytime We Touch (slow version) by Cascasa, or I’m Yours by Jason Mraz.
The first time I was at a wedding with my now-fiance, I heard my favorite slow song come on. He hates to dance, so imagine my surprise when he asked me to dance with him. Turns out it’s a song he loves too, so picking it for our first dance was a no brainer. The song? “At Last”, by Etta James.
Were dancing to Louis Armstrong’s version of “La vie en rose.” There is this gorgeous trumpet solo in the beginning that is so beautiful and romantic that it doesn’t even matter that half of the song has no words. I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as we do!
We will be dancing to “Fresh Feeling” by the Eels… which will segue into a fast paced “First Kiss” by They Might Be Giants!
I would like us to use The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra
Shania Twain “From this moment on”…. Enough said. :)
2 great songs we’re considering: All I do by Stevie Wonder and How Sweet it Is (to be loved by you) Marvin Gaye version
Oh by Dave Matthews or as a back up Steady As We Go also by Dave Matthews…can you tell we are huge DMB fans?
We were thinking about At Last by Etta James.
We’ve decided on a song that suits us PERFECTLY. My fiance is a huge (and I mean HUGE) Beatles fan. I adore Regina Spektor. Our song is Real Love, writen by John Lennon- as performed by Regina Spektor. We’re both very particular about our music and this is our perfect compramise. What is a marriage if not compramise? It’s a beautiful rendition.
Probably the opening theme from Skullmonkeys… it’s really catchy, almost swing dance music.
Our first dance soon is “Moon River” by Louis Armstrong. Selecting our song for our April wedding was a highlight of the planning so far!
I’m rooting for “How Sweet It Is” but my fiance is still considering all the options.
In our many years of experience, the best first dance song is something special to the two of you. Whether it’s a memory from your first date or your favorite mutual artist, it will be something meaningful. However, we have encountered countless clients who don’t have something that fits the above description. This is when we highly recommend a classic. “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra. “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. “In My Life” by the Beatles (or the amazing version by Keali’i Reichel). Another incredible idea is to choose the song that your parents or grandparents danced to at their wedding.
Please steal these songs! I have only used them once each for First Dance’s. I promise they are not overplayed! Katie Melua: Just Like Heaven Landon Pigg: Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop (you kinda need to have had a coffee shop somewhere in your love story for this one!) Austin@AustinBeaver.Com
“Amazing” by Josh Kelly! Its so sweet and fun :)
We decided to throw it back to the great era of disco and dance to “More than a Woman”, by the Bee Gees
“God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys… it’s just us!
We haven’t decided yet (we have 7 more months), but some of the songs we’re considering are: Elvis – Love Me Tender Ella Fitzgerald – Our Love is Here To Stay The Cure – Lovesong Travis – Love Will Come Through Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova – Falling Slowly Depeche Mode – Just Can’t Get Enough (I want this one – it’s fun!)
We’ve decided that our first song will be “Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing” by The Magnetic Fields. It’s everything we want – cute, a little quirky, around 2 minutes and great for a classic waltz.
We finally decided on “I’m in Love” by Wilson Pickett. We love motown and this song is so romantic, it is perfect for us!
We are torn between two songs…I want, They Bring Me to You by Joshua Radin and fiancee wants Good Luck by his favorite artist Bob Schneider. Whatever one we decide to use, the other song will still get played at some point during the reception.
I am so excited to see so many couples choosing modern songs for their wedding. While a classical or traditional song may be right for some people I think it is fun for everyone to get to know you better by your song selection. I am choreographing more surprise dances this year than ever before. I think more grooms are getting into the idea of having a really fun dance and not just doing the standard SWAY & GROPE. Some of my favorite artists this year Ray Lamontage, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Michael Buble! Classics- Frank Sinatra, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, My vote for most boring way too slow song ; AT LAST AT LAST is good for first marriage over 40 If the couple is young, AT LAST is not appropriate,
We will be dancing to “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison!
We are thinking of “For a Moment like this” sang by Leona Lewis (British Singer) as the lyrics have lots of meaning
I feel in love with “Today” by Joshua Radin, “Everything” Michael Buble, and “Come with me” – Catpower
Elvis – I can’t help falling in love with you. Because our karaoke crazy best man’s dad will sing it for us (smile).
were probably going with Murmello by Beuna Vista Social Club. Or the Garden by the Creepshow.
“A Sunday Smile” by Beirut. Three months after our wedding, now every time I here it, my heart pums harder.
We’ve chosen “Bless the Broken Road” by Selah.
We Danced to Michael Buble “Everything”… i fell in love with the lyrics! .. your the line in the sane when i go to far…. … and i get to kiss you baby just because i can…
Our first dance song is going to be All My Life by K-Ci and JoJo. My fiance and I used to date long-distance, and it was very hard for us to say goodbye when we had to part at the end of each weekend together. My fiance used to lightly sing this song to me each time I was leaving his house in Alabama to drive back to Virginia, and it became our song.
After much debate we chose to dance to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Calliet. Every word of the song hits home for us. We are best friends and as cheesy as it sounds are so lucky to be where we are in out relationship now as to where we have been, but lucky to have experienced it all none the less. Absence makes the heart grow fonder! And what a fun song to dance to!
“Dear Someone” by Gillian Welch- short and so, so sweet!!
we chose adam sandler’s “Grown Old with You” from The Wedding Singer. it went over very well :-)
We are considering “33” by the Smashing Pumpkins or “Turn Me On” by Norah Jones.
Amazed – by Lonestar, the sappy look he gets everytime we hear this song will probably bring on the tears, but I love that sappy look.
We are planning on dancing to ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ by Elton John. That is uncertain though.
Micheal Buble – Sway :) my heart melts when i think of us dancing to this song
Our wedding is a Friday night cocktail party high up in midtown Manhattan with amazing views of the East River and Brooklyn. The feeling is a little vintage New York and a lot of fun, so our first dance is “You Are My Sunshine” by Ray Charles. It’s incredibly sweet, happy and the perfect way to get other people on the dance floor.
One of the first dates I had with my boyfriend was a Needtobreathe concert. We had never heard them before but as our love for each other grew so did our love of that band. We decided that the lyrics of “Looks Like Love” fit our relationship really well and it would make a meaningful first dance.
We are dancing to Tracy Byrd “Keeper of the Stars”. I chose it because it talks about our deep love for each other but also that it was God who brought us together. If you don’t know the song I attached some of the lyrics (if you don’t listen to country… you have to at least hear it once!) It was no accident me finding you Someone had a hand in it Long before we ever knew Now I just can’t believe you’re in my life Heaven’s smilin’ down on me As I look at you tonight I tip my hat to the keeper of the stars He sure knew what he was doin’ When he joined these two hearts I hold everything When I hold you in my arms I’ve got all I’ll ever need Thanks to the keeper of the stars Soft moonlight on your face oh how you shine It takes my breath away Just to look into your eyes I know I don’t deserve a treasure like you There really are no words To show my gratitude
Somewhere Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin. Our first date was watching Finding Nemo of all movies. It reminds us of that day.
We’re doing Time after Time…still deciding between the Cyndi Lauper version and the version that’s in the movie, Strictly Ballroom.
We are dancing to either “Lullaby” by the Dixie Chicks or “Pistol” by Dustin Kensrue. We will probably go with his pick of Pistol so I can walk down the isle to Lullaby (which is my favorite).
“God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys… it’s going to be interesting to dance to.
Great question, and I love to see all the answers. We have played many different first-dance songs, many of them the classics like “It Had To Be You”, “The Best Is Yet To Come”, “L-O-V-E”, etc. We are a jazz band, so we love to play standards such as those. But my favorites are always the unusual ones. Probably the most unusual was “Take Me Out To the Ballgame”! The couple were huge baseball fans, and the whole wedding was baseball themed, from tables named after famous ballparks to a bat used for the guestbook! The bride sheepishly asked me about it and I shouted “Yes!”. Other favorites have been Ben Folds Five “The Luckiest”, Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are”, and a song called “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing”, which I didn’t know prior and now is one of my favorite tunes to play! Feel free to contact me for more suggestions. Jason Parker Jason Parker Quartet http://www.jasonparkerquartet.com http://jasonparkerquartet.blogspot.com jason@jasonparkerquartet.com
Memories of Us by Keith Urban. My FI took me to the concert last year so this has to be the song for us.
We’re going to dance our little hearts out to Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton.
We chose “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It has a fun upbeat tempo that will get the party started, but it’s also timeless!
We chose Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is”… but a power outage during our reception unfortunately prevented it from being played. Our band was sweet enough to serenade us with an acoustic song of their choice, which ended up being Green Day’s “The Time of Your Life”! Not exactly what we had planned but a wonderful memory nonetheless. :)
So far we’ve been really thinking about “Everlasting Love” but The Love Affair – so fun and not a slow song, plus the lyrics are great. Another one we’ve been thinking is “All I want is you” by U2 Might do the U2 version of “Everlasting Love” then we get both!! ;P
Everything by Michael Buble. When we met, this song first started playing on the radio, and it just hit me, HE was my everything. And ever since, it’s been our song, and we both tell eachother constantly that we are everything to one another. I can’t wait to play that song at our wedding!
I notice that someone else listed it as well, but we are going with “You are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne.
At Last – Etta James
Wow, I love seeing everyone’s first songs. We are dancing to Cold Play’s “MIss You” It will also be our wedding video song! Thanks for the contest
Our first dance song was an easy and fun choice “Keepin’ it Real” by Mason Jennings almost perfectly describes the feeling we have for each other and the attitude we want to start our marriage with.
We are thinking about dancing to Rhett Miller’s “Question”. My fiance proposed to me in a park and there is a picture he took of me before I knew he was going to propose where I have my arms crossed. And then as he was proposing, I started to cry…in a good way ;). This all makes the lyrics really meaningful to us:- He took her to the park She crossed her arms And lowered her eyelids Some day somebody’s gonna ask you A question that you should say yes to Once in your life Maybe tonight I’ve got a question for you She’d had no idea Started to cry She said in a good way
We want to dance to “More Than Anyone” by Gavin DeGraw….
I Found a Reason covered by Cat Power
We’ve chose “Something” by The Beatles! We are both huge Beatles fans and the lyrics just seem to have a special place in our hearts!
When I first head the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Hard to Concentrate” I thought — A perfect first dance song! It is such a simple, beautiful song … the lyrics are pared down to the most heartfelt words … I just love it. “all i want is for you to be happy and take this woman and make you my family and finally you have found someone perfect and finally you have found… one to treasure the rest of your days here and give you pleasure in so many ways dear and finally you have found something perfect and finally you have found……here we go do you want me to show up for duty and serve this woman and honor her beauty and finally you have found something perfect and finally you have found……yourself”
My husband and I chose “Lost In This Moment” by Big & Rich. Its just a sweet song and the lyrics says it all.
Our wedding has come and gone, but the iPod we planned to use BROKE at the start of the reception! The planned first dance was “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” as covered by The Eels. Our wonderful photographer stepped in and played some music off her iPhone so we’d at least have a first dance, but to this day we couldn’t tell you what the song was.
Our first dance song is “We Will Dance” by Steven Curtis Chapman. We chose it because we dance, all the time, anywhere we hear a song we want to dance to. And the song talks about dancing through all the parts of life: joys, trials, and all the way until we’re older. It’s perfect for us!
We haven’t yet decided on our first dance song, but I really want to hear Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” at some point (maybe when we are announced before the first dance). My fiance and I saw Stevie in concert while we were dating and I just think it is the perfect song for our celebration!
We chose I Cross My Heart by George Strait. We dated for a few months years ago, and it was “our song” back then, and we decided to keep it and dance to it at our wedding.
Our first dance song was “Far Away” by Nickelback. It was the most fitting song for us as for a large portion of our relationship we were 1400 miles apart!
We’re going to do the Plain White T’s song “Write you a song”. Clay is a musician and is arranging all of our music for the ceremony, so it has a lot of meaning on top of it.
We’ll probably be using “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson!
“The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michalson! LOVE IT!
We’re not engaged, but with Tim McGraw being a favorite for both me and the manfriend, I think Tim’s “My Best Friend” would be perfect. I’m sure it’s overdone and we’ll change our minds 100 times, but it’s one song we’ve never crossed off the list!
We are planning on dancing to “Where do I begin” by Shirely Bassey.
My Fiance and I are dancing to Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. When we first started dating I was a big Grays Anatomy fan. The song was played on the Season Finale episode when Izzy’s boyfriend Denny died (it was so moving). It hadn’t been playing on the radio yet, so my fiance googled it for me to find out who it was. We liked Snow Patrol before, but didn’t realize at that point it was them. Even though it’s been played on the radio lots since then, it’s remained “our song”!
We danced to Allison Krause’s “When you say nothing at all…” Melissa Pace singing for The Joe Muscolino Band did the personal rendition…
My fiance and I will be dancing to “Collide” by Howie Day. We’ve come to know that as “our song”. To make it even more special to us, my brother is going to sing the song accompanied by my fiance’s friend on the guitar. I can’t wait.
We chose Adam Sandler “I Want to Grow Old with You”
Al Green – I’m Glad You’re Mine played live by our musician & sang by a lady with such a soulful voice. so romantic.. very romantic.
We are dancing to Sade’s Kiss of life. Starts off slow and at the end speeds up a bit so we can put our dance lessons to use!
Seasons of Love, from Rent… sigh. Love it!
“Blue Moon” recorded by Ella Fitzgerald. Reminds me of my grandparents wedding just prior to WWII. My grandfather was on a ship in the Pacific for most of the war and told my grandma that he thought of her every time he looked at the moon. I love that.
this song is sooooo special to us! “My Baby Just Cares for Me” by Nina Simone we LOVE her.
When it comes to first dances, I’ve performed far too many that have worked beautifully, to be able to choose one as “the best” or “number one”. I think it is better in this all-important dance of love, for couples to first consider a broad spectrum of styles, messages and artists, and be open to what really touches you personally. Here is my most often recommended collection: As Time Goes By E. Fitzgerald At Last Etta James Better Together J. Johnson The Book Of Love P. Gabriel Come Away With Me N. Jones Crazy Love V. michael buble – everything
I’m considering Happy Everafter in Your Eyes or Forever by Ben Harper, Follow me by John Denver or Come Rain or Come Shine by Ray Charles.
Harvest Moon by Neil Young. We both love the song and it it one of my parents favorites as well so it has a lot of meaning to us.
We’re dancing to My One and Only Love played by Arturo Xicay, an amazing Guatemalan sax player!
I believe (when I fall in love) – Stevie Wonder
We are either dancing to “Green Eyes” by Coldplay or “This Year’s Love” by David Gray. Both very sweet, real songs. I love reading everyone’s submissions!! Great choices out there.
This is a wonderful giveaway! We are trying to pick our first dance song. I really love Bring it on Home by Sugarland. I am still researching numerous songs. Reading this post gives me some excellent ideas though!
“Marry Me” by Ed Cash… every line of the song fits us perfectly, well except when he says the name carrie ;)
We’re considering “You Are So Beautiful,” “You Are the Best Thing,” or Priscilla Ahn’s “The Way Back Home.”
We danced to Someone Like You by V. Morrison. It had a great message, was less used for first dances than many others that were recommended and it was more fun to dance to. We took lessons and did a contemporary rhumba with lots of turns and a dip at the end, of course! The pictures are perfect! Also, we had singers at the church for during the ceremony…they sang When You Say Nothing At All by A. Krauss & The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. But make sure your singers can handle the notes if they sing The Prayer – it can be a powerful song if done properly!
its either going to be “just the two of us” by bill withers or “by your side” by sade. i love both of these songs.
We are dancing to Bob Marley’s “Is This Love”- the words are perfect! I wanna love you and treat you right; I wanna love you every day and every night: Well be together with a roof right over our heads…etc.
we will be dancing to “keeper of the stars” by tracy byrd. not long after we met, my then boyfriend downloaded it onto my ipod (a very very OLD ipod) and told me he thought i’d love the song. 2 years went by, and we never mentioned the song again… until the day after we got engaged, he told me he wanted that to be our song for our first dance. i always had a feeling that’s why he had put it on my ipod to listen to! ;)
…because my fiancee is a musician, he wrote a beautiful instrumental ballad as our first dance song and that’s what we’ll be dancing to! =)
writing the song for my first dance…on vibes!
We think we are going to use “Better Together” by Jack Johnson.
We have chosen “A crazy little thing called love” by Queen.
American Classic by Franky Perez…best song EVER!
We’re going with “One and Only” by Teitur… we can’t wait.
We are dancing to a combination of Up Where We Belong by Joe Crocker and The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson
How you play the hand by Radney Foster. It’s on his live CD “Are You Ready For The Big Show?” and in the CD he dedicated it to his parents. I spent many evenings chatting with them at shows and was always amazed by the grace and charm and love that they radiated.
something by Loudon Waignright
As cliche as it may sounds, Elvis’ “Can’t help falling in Love with you” will be our first dance. Simply put-that song just perfectly describes how we feel about each other!
“islands in the stream” as covered by feist and the constantines
Band of Horses – Part One. Such a sweet little song, and won’t be too long… :)
love and happiness – al green
“Amarte es total”, Eros Ramazzotti
“You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” by Leo Sayer
We are more movie people than music people so we had to search high and low for a song. We are actually going with something suggested by our invitation designer! When I explained our wedding “theme” is centered around apples–baskets of apples for centerpieces, our names carved in an apple tree on the invites–she mentioned Chantel Kreviazuk’s “Green Apples” which she and her husband danced to at their wedding! It’s such a sweet song we decided to go with it!
we were thinking of something more light hearted… ‘grow old with you’ by adam sandler ‘i’m yours’ by jason mraz ‘don’t change’ by musiq soulchild ‘at last’ by etta james.
We’re going to dance the west coast swing to “We are man and wife” by Michelle Featherstone!! I can’t wait!!
We’re going to dance to Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life.” My fiance put it on a mix CD for me when we first started dating and I’ve loved the song ever since!
“Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat
Jon B – You don’t know. oldie but a goody
“The Story” by Brandi Carlile, I love the lyrics; he loves that it has a lot of rock and soul to it. It’s so very us! :)
DJ SEAN and DJ LESLIE’s Picks from Seattle Parties.com : Here are our favorites that brides and grooms have used with us most recently: Sideways – Citizen Cope Dance Me to The End of Love – Madeleine Peyroux Skinny Love – Bon Iver First Day of My Love – Bright Eyes California Stars – Billy Bragg and Wilco Brighter Than Sunshine – Aqualung Earth Angel – Death cab For Cutie One of These things First – Nick Drake Sea of Love – Cat Power Let’s Never Stop Falling in love – Pink Martini Forever – Ben Harper
“Wouldn’t It Be Nice” — Beach Boys. Long distance off and on since we were 16! It is FINALLY nice that we’re older and can be together :) Can’t wait!
Bruce Hornsby is a big possibility, because my fiance loves Bruce, and gave me a Best of Bruce cd for our 2nd Valentine’s day. “I Will Walk With You” or “Fields of Grey” are both possibilities…and if not for the first dance, then for the recessional. Although “Fever” by Michael Buble would be fun if I could convince my fiance to take dance lessons!
Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing”
“dance with you” by live. What’s more fitting for first dance lyrics than “I want to dance with you…”? :)
We’ve been thinking of Blue Skies by Willie Nelson. But I’d kind of forgotten about She and Him until I saw it in this comments section. Hmmm…
Everything sung by Michael Buble!
We’re probably going to use Adam Sandler’s “Growing Old with You” from The Wedding Singer. Love and marriage are all about the little things and being there for one another.
We haven’t actually tried dancing to it yet, but I really want to dance to the Magnetic Fields’ “If There’s Such a Thing As Love.” Cute, quirky, poppy, and romantic. And as others have noted, not too long. =)
My fiance and I are huge music people – we love live music, new music, and have taken time off work to go to music festivals. So obviously, the first song has been a never-ending debate from the time he proposed. We’re getting married in September – so we haven’t decided yet, but here are some of the candidates: Jack Johnson – Better Together: Love love love this song – but how do you dance to it… Ray LaMontagne – Hold You In My Arms : Sweet, but also a little sad. I wish I didn’t have to agree with all the lyrics! Jeffrey Foucault – Mesa, Arizona : An unknown artist for most, awesome voice and very sweet song – but maybe a little too upbeat Etta James – At Last : An old standby, he thinks it’s too cheesy… I’m actually loving this post just to get new ideas and debate with him. :) It’s become a daily email routine.
We used “Someone” by DHT. I still love the song and it was perfect for our wedding.
Our first dance song was “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. It was perfect – catchy, fun beat, and short! Other ones in contention: “Hold You In My Arms” – Ray LaMontague “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” – Death Cab for Cutie
We’re dancing to Queen’s “Your my best friend.” It’s a little faster than I thought my first dance would be – but we used to sing it to each other all of the time!
We’re thinking of using Nouvelle Vague’s “I melt with you”. Thanks for the opportunity! :)
My fiance really wants our first dance to be The Way You Look Tonight. He’s really got his heart set on this song so I think I’m going to have to agree. “Lovely. Never ever change… Keep that breathless charm. Won’t you please arrage it. ‘Cause I love you. Just the way you look tonight”. *big sigh*
“Dancing in the Moonlight”
Every year on our anniversary we listen to David Grey’s “This Year’s Love”. It also reminds us of one of our favorite movies.
“You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain. We had a long distance relationship (California and Pennsylvania) for four years, and always told each other we’d get through it… despite everyone telling us that long distance relationships don’t work… and we’d play this song at our wedding someday as a testament to how strong our love is.
Try a little tenderness – The commitments (hopefully) ;)
My fiance gave me a burned CD before we officially started dating of Zero 7 and the song I would listen to over and over in the car thinking of him was “Destiny”. That will be our first song. However, when listening to the words, I’m not sure it’s really applicable to our specific story, but it is a beautiful song nonetheless!
We are going to dance to unchained melody….love it!
I am a wedding officiant in Clearwater Florida- and here’s a list of what some of my couples have chosen: A Whole New World Aladdin’s Theme Because You Loved Me – Celine Dion Can’t Help Falling In love – Elvis Presley Can You Feel The Love tonight – Elton John Circle of Life – Elton John Crazy for You – Madonna Don’t know much but I know I love you Aaron Neville Endless Love Mariah Carey Evergreen – Barbara Streisand Every day I love you -Boyzone Everything I do (I Do It For You) – Bryan Adams From This Moment On – Shania Twain Greatest Love Of All – Whitney Houston Have I told you lately that I love you – Van Morrison How Do I Live – Leanne Rhimes I don’t wanna miss a thing – Aerosmith I knew I loved you before I met you – Savage Garden I will always love you Whitney Houston I’ll be there Mariah Carey I love the way you love me Boyzone I wanna be with you Mandy More Love me Tender Elvis Presley Loving You Ripperton Mini Only you Roy Orbison More Harry Connick Junior My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion/Titanic Save the Best for Last -Vanessa Williams Sometimes when we touch Rod Stewart Take my breath away – Berlin Thank God I found you Mariah Carey Thank you – Dido The Greatest Love of All Whitney Houston The Power of Love Celine Dion The Rose – Bette Midler Tonight I celebrate my love P.Bryson/R.Flack Truly Madly Deeply – Savage Garden Unchained Melody – The Righteous Brothers Unforgettable -Natalie King Cole We’ve Only Just Begun The Carpenters When I need you Celine Dion When I Fall In Love – Celine Dion When You Say Nothing At All Ronan Keating Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler You Light Up My Life – Debbie Boone Your Song Elton John You’re Still The One – Shania Twain You’ve Got a Way – Shania Twain You Were Meant for Me Jewel
We have put a LOT of thought into the songs that will be played at the ceremony & reception and are so excited to have picked such fun, meaningful tunes! The bridesmaids and men are walking down the aisle to Led Zeppelin’s Bron-Yr-Aur (we love Led Zeppelin and this is a perfect way to incorporate them and have a gorgeous song to walk to) and I am walking down to an acoustic version of “Annie’s Song” which is a total tribute to my mom. At the end of the ceremony, we are going to have our guitarist (who happens to be my maid of honor’s dad) play “In My Life” by the Beatles which is a song that always reminded us of eachother. At the reception, we are going to have everyone introduced with the “Trumpet Voluntary,” the Prince of Denmark’s March, since we met in Denmark & our first dance is to “One and Only” by the Scandinavian artist, Teitur. I can’t wait…
The song we have chosen for our first dance as husband and wife will be Please Be Patient With Me by Wilco.
my fiance is into his heavy metal, i think he wants ‘i just want you’ by Ozzy Osbourne, i was thinking more like ‘you belong to me’ from the shrek soundtrack but think he is winning.
“All You Need is Love” by the Beatles. :) An all time favorite and almost appropriate for almost all parts of the wedding.
Our first dance song is going to be “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson. It fits us perfectly. It was between that or “Comfortable” by John Mayer
We changed it at the last minute to ‘Best Friend’ by Tim McGraw…the words are perfect in that song!
I like All you need is love and Truly Madly Deeply.
Very funny post…
