After meeting in graduate school at Washington University, Sadie and Lilly fell in love and became the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in St. Louis, Missouri! Their amazing journey to the alter consisted of many DIY projects and gathering countless mix-matched candles. Love and Perry beautifully documented the couple’s stunning and bright rustic wedding at Three Barn Farm in Clarksville, Missouri.

The Couple:

Lilly and Sadie

The Wedding:

Three Barn Farm, Clarksville, Missouri

The Inspiration:

I proposed to Sadie at Chez Pannisse in Berkeley California, and our wedding colors were inspired by our menu that evening – sage, persimmon and champagne. DIY wedding projects swiftly became my relaxation, and sometimes procrastination, activity; I spent much of my free time hunting for the perfect crystal glass to make into a candle, sanding and painting windows for signs, and wood burning our initials into an oak letter box. I promised myself (but mostly my wife) that if the projects started to stress me out I would call it quits, but every project brought on new ideas and heightened my excitement for our big day.

From Lilly: After spending last summer in the United Kingdom, my heart was set on wearing a gown by designer Catherine Deane. Luckily, she has a wide selection of her dresses available through BHLDN and I was able to wear her Sian gown which perfectly matched our outdoor, elegant yet still casual ceremony. Helping Sadie find the perfect wedding outfit was a priority for me as clothing for androgynous women can be a challenge. We stumbled upon Bindle & Keep in Brooklyn and fell in love. They made us feel so comfortable and made the perfect suit for her, down to the last detail. Sadie definitely stole the show walking down the aisle last in her custom suit and coral bow tie which matched the ranunculus and my ballet flats perfectly!

The Moments:

One of our favorite moments of the night was getting whisked away by our photographers for some couples shots at dusk. We finally enjoyed some quiet moments away from the crowd. Truly savoring the moment was so special, and we can’t thank our photographers, Love + Perry, enough for capturing our special day! The night concluded with the releasing of a paper lantern, a tradition at Three Barn Farm. Sadie and I made our wishes and hopes for the future and our guests watched as they floated up into the cloudless night sky. We could not have asked for a more perfect day with our loved ones.

The Couple Recommends:

Working with Love and Perry was a huge privilege. They were so friendly, fun, and down to earth. Sadie and I loved working with Brittney and Shana because they made us feel comfortable and we 110% trusted them to capture our special day. They took the time to get to know our personalities and style and it is truly reflected in our photos. After two frightening flights, a long drive, and lots of Midwestern humidity they were there waiting for us, pumped for the day. It doesn’t get much better than that!
