This Wedding at The Pearl Hotel Blends Mid-Century Style with Hawaiian Vibes

April 15, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

If you’re a fan of mid-century style and tropical florals, Tish and Darren’s glorious San Diego wedding at The Pearl Hotel will make your heart skip a beat! Alexandria Monette Photography worked her magic to capture photos that showcased the couple’s unique style and fit the bright, laid-back vibe of the entire day. In true Hollywood style, the couple was dressed to the nines! Tish looked flawless in a chic Alexandra Grecco gown and Badgley Mischka accessories, and Darren looked like a long-lost member of the Rat Pack in a classic black and white tuxedo from The Black Tux. Their poolside ceremony and reception were anything but stuffy though, and featured an array of tropical florals from California & Florist, a wall of succulents, personal knick-knacks, personalized signs, and a giant screen to project movies when the sun went down. We’re pretty sure this was one night and one party their guests will never forget!

The Couple:

Tish and Darren

The Wedding:

The Pearl Hotel, San Diego, California

We wanted a unique mid-century modern style hotel. We visited mostly Palm Springs venues and remembered a cute boutique hotel we had visited when we were friends that was located in Point Loma. When I found out that you can “Own the Hotel” for your wedding, we were pretty sold. Once we visited, we were met with a warm and hospitable staff. It just made sense for us to revisit this old gem!

For my wedding look, I wanted to feel relaxed to enjoy the day. That meant finding a dress I can move and dance in. The look needed to feel slightly classic to offset Darren‘s awesome black shawl white tuxedo jacket. My accessories were minimal. The rest of the bridal party was asked to select a dress of their choice in the color that was given to them. The only rules was it was cocktail style and had to make them look sexy!

Our vows to each other were hands-down the most memorable. We are pretty private people, so to put our heart in a vulnerable place for all our closest friends and family to hear was definitely a life-changing moment for the both of us.

Alexandria Monette Photography was professional and warm from the beginning. It was so helpful that we booked an engagement session prior to the wedding. It helped us feel at ease with her. We worked on a detailed schedule for the day and she nailed every shot. Her dedication to her craft was transparent in every way.

Get Your Tissues Ready for This Sweet Surprise Wedding at Saint Irene’s

April 14, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Surprise weddings are incredibly difficult to pull off, but Lindsey and Bradley and the talented team at Mae & Co Creative managed to put together this stunning surprise celebration at Saint Irene’s in Portland! In less than 2 months, they and Good Seed Floral made the modern venue look like an earthy, woodland-inspired dream by hanging and laying greenery on every surface, leaving sweet notes and handkerchiefs on each chair for their guests, and creating a dessert table that would satisfy any sweet tooth. The bride and groom didn’t scrimp on style, with Lindsey wearing a knock-out Pronovias lace gown and Bradley opting for a modern, grey suit. We adore that their wedding party only included their two young children, and we could hardly keep it together when seeing each heartfelt moment that Kati Nicole Photo captured, especially Bradley’s surprise father-daughter dance at the end of the night.

The Wedding:

Saint Irene’s, Portland, Oregon

All the stars aligned and we planned a wedding in 2 months without our friends or family knowing. So, without a doubt, seeing some of our closest friends walk up to the venue, not sure what was going on, then having it click for them was the most memorable part of the day! Pure shock…excitement… laughter… it was so sweet seeing those closest to us react to the reality that they showed up to our wedding without knowing it. We had so many people in our corner throughout our dating relationship, so to share this day with those closest to us meant the world. We just wanted it to be a big celebration for everyone, and it was!

Each guest entered into the venue with handkerchiefs on each chair. For anyone close to the groom, they know he never goes a day without his handkerchief. Tied to the rolled handkerchief was a sweet card which read, “For tears of love, and tears of laughter, here’s to happily ever after.”

I always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, but we decided we didn’t want to wait to get married, which meant a fall or winter wedding. I love neutrals, and greenery, and the vision grew from that. When I met with the florist, Good Seed, I knew florals were going to be our big splurge. Once we got to talking, we dreamed this magical idea of bringing forest like features indoor, yet keeping it modern with the venue. When Taylor mentioned hanging greenery from all the track lighting and greenery growing up the curtains, I knew they were the vendor for me. Accenting the greenery were florals in whites, creams, and blushes with a pop of marsala to give it the fall feel. It was a modern dreamy feel throughout the space for sure.

Perhaps the most cherished moment, after the traditional dances, Bradley announced there was one more dance, in which he invited our 7 year old daughter to the dance floor, and surprised everyone, including her, with a special father daughter dance. There was not a dry eye.

This Unconventional Museum of Life and Science Wedding Pulled Inspiration From Its Unique Venue

Kassy and Brandon are the epitome of quirky and cool, as evidenced by their whimsical and vintage-inspired Museum of Life and Science wedding! Surrounded by preserved insects hanging on the walls, dinosaur sculptures in the gardens, and complete with a mad-scientist bar station with dry ice, they transported their guests into the wonderful world of science and made everyone get in touch with their inner child. The decor was simple but colorful and featured a DIY cake/dessert stand made from an old tree, thrifted pieces, and florals from local farms. Since nothing about this wedding was traditional, it was only fitting that Kassy also rocked a non-traditional, custom two-piece ensemble that tailor Diana Deane made using fabric from Kassy’s grandmother’s and mother’s wedding dresses. The entire day had a truly carefree and fun feeling that only Samantha Floyd Photography could have captured with such ease and creativity!

The Wedding:

Museum of Life and Science, Durham, North Carolina

The wedding invitations were made (by me) from recycled paper and super old stock paper from a closed down print shop that I grew up across the street from. The envelope liners were also made from a thrifted book about insects, and each invitation and envelope was different!

I knew after trying on dress after dress that traditional wedding gowns were not for me. So, I dug out both my mother’s and grandmother’s dresses from my parents’ attic and had this awesome seamstress custom make something from the materials. The lining of it is from my mom’s dress, lace, and buttons from my grandmother’s dress, and an embroidered flower overlay from fabric I found on Etsy that I felt was uniquely me. What is extra special about those original gowns is that both my mom and Godmother wore one, and my grandma and both of her sisters wore the other. I got to wear a piece of so many amazing women! I also wore all vintage jewelry, both given to me by family or thrifted.

The Museum of Life and Science is one of our favorite places ever. We figured it would be unique, true to us, and a super fun place to hang out at all night. The cocktail hour was in a butterfly garden and insectarium, and a lot of our adult guests said they felt like kids again, which is exactly how we wanted them to feel!

Our wedding favors were little honey jars filled with local honey from Bee Downtown. I (Kassy) had been following Leigh-Kathryn, an awesome female beekeeper, on Instagram for a while and reached out to her about personalizing the honey jars. It not only fit our life + science theme but Bee Downtown is part of a huge movement to SAVE THE BEES!

My dad made our cake/dessert stand out of a tree he cut down himself. The bouquets, centerpieces, and flower crowns were put together by the bridesmaids, our mothers, and my aunts and cousins. We used seasonal flowers from local farmers (both badass women farmers). All of the setup the day of was done by our aunts, uncles, and cousins. The table runners, glass vases, candle holders, and frames on each table were thrifted. I feel like everything was DIY!

Our best advice is to try not to make decisions based on what other people think, and stick to what YOU, as a couple, love. We literally had spiders hanging from the walls and bug themed everything, and everyone still had fun! Also, love between the couple and their family and friends is the most important thing, and no amount of money can pay for that.
