The cakes from Washington, D.C.’s Maggie Austin Cakes are truly pieces of edible art, and if you’re anything like me (owner of a giant sweet tooth and lover of all things pretty) we’re talking swoon-city!
Chef and owner Maggie LaBaugh creates haute couture confectionery masterpieces using the freshest ingredients and the finest techniques. This former dancer and graduate of the French Pastry School draws on her training as a classical ballet dancer to create designs that are elegant, sophisticated and graceful. Each cake is tailored exclusively to her client’s ideas, making every one unique. Using her amazing creative talents, Maggie will hand-paint, hand-craft and hand sculpt each sugar flower, ruffle or vintage looking rosette, and cakes can be ordered in flavors that range from seasonal to whimsical to deliciously traditional.
Check out the Maggie Austin Cakes website to learn more about their offerings, and to see many, many more stunning cake creations that are almost too pretty to eat! Though I’m sure that wouldn’t stop me.
Here we are in week three of Laura and Billy’s four week wedding planning process (so close to the big day!) and today we’re chatting with the bride herself about that all-important piece of the puzzle, the wedding photography. It just so happens that Laura is a wedding photographer herself with Laura Marchbanks Photography so her normal involvement with this subject happens behind the camera, not in front of it. But in less than two short weeks she will be the subject of hundreds and hundreds of images captured by the fabulous Jasmine Star, as thousands of other photographers look on during the live broadcast no less! Since we’ll get to see lots of Jasmine’s work after the wedding (can’t wait!) I thought today it would be fun to see some of Laura’s own favorite images and to get her take on becoming the girl in front of the camera…
It’s an interesting perspective to be both bride and photographer. As I photographer, I love to photograph the details. I could get caught up in styling and shooting perfect products all day long. As a person, the captured moments are what evoke the most emotion in me. I can’t help but feel moved by witnessing all the interactions of a wedding day. These images I’ve pulled aren’t necessarily my WOW images. But they are some of my favorites. I remember a story about each one of them; what she said right before I hit the button, the sound of the laughter, a feeling in the air. The authenticity of the moment is what grabs me, no matter how raw or imperfect.
One of my favorite moments of a wedding day is capturing the transformation from woman to bride. Something happens as soon as the dress is slipped on. As it’s being zipped or laced, the look on her face and her focus – it changes! During the ceremony I love the moments when the bride is walking down the isle. I love to show the way her mother sees her, like she can’t believe how grown up her daughter is. And the groom is realizing in just a few short moments he’ll be her husband. He has that look of excitement, fear, and joy all at once! It’s amazing to witness!
I’m excited to be captured as a bride and I’m interested to see the day unfold through the imagery. I can’t wait to see how Jasmine captures the love between us, and how we look at this moment in our lives!

What three adjectives that best describe your wedding:Relaxed, fun, romantic.
What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day?We wanted our wedding to be relaxed and personal, yet still honour the tradition and the commitment we were making to each other.
We chose a wedding team that we felt very comfortable with and had a lot of confidence in so that it wasn’t stressful leading up to the day. We tried to focus on getting the atmosphere right rather than spending too much time focusing on a theme and the small details.
The venues we chose for our ceremony and reception reflected our personalities and what we wanted our wedding to be about. The ceremony was held in a beautiful old chapel and was performed by our family priest. The reception was held at Indiana’s which sits right on the stunning Cottesloe Beach. It provided such a nice, beach-y, relaxed feel!
Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? The ceremony was definitely the most special part of the day – it’s what the day is all about! We loved sharing the day with so many of our family and friends and we loved having our little nieces, nephew and all our friend’s children at the ceremony. They are a special part of our lives and it was lovely to have them there. A great moment was when we were announced into the reception. We had everyone standing in a circle around the dancefloor and we started dancing as soon as we arrived. All the guests joined us and it was a fantastic way to start the party.
We also had an amazing photographer Natasja Kremers who did a fantastic job in really capturing in photos what the day was all about; love, family and friends.
