What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding?
1) Guests: we wanted to do our best to make sure all our guests felt loved and had a fun time.
2) Venue: we wanted to be married outdoors surrounded by gorgeous blooms and an indoor reception space that was effortlessly elegant.
3) Photos: it was important for us to find an amazing photographer to capture every bit of our wedding day and the details.

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporate into your wedding and what did they mean to you? Since I was a little girl, Ive always loved to see brides in traditional qi pao dresses on their wedding day. Custom-made to fit in a variety of bright fabrics and intricate embroidery, the qi pao is very much part of Chinese culture and often worn at weddings or times of celebration. To be able to wear one myself on my own wedding day was very special to me.

Were there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? Henry and I opted to do a first look before the ceremony, which goes against the tradition that the bride and groom do not see each other before the wedding. It gave us the opportunity to have just one moment all to ourselves. It was emotional to say the least and Ill cherish the feeling always.

What was your biggest wedding planning success? The biggest success was that we were able to pull off a fun party and celebrate with the most important people in our lives!

Charming Springtime Wedding in Sausalito, California – Mastin Studio

June 27, 2012 | editorial team

Julia and Peter threw a charming springtime wedding at the Headland Center for the Arts, with the awe-inspiring view of the Golden Gate Bridge as their backdrop, perched on an outcropping of the Marin Headlands. The couple treasures their friends and family, and planned every detail with their guests’ experience in mind. With bright orange flowers from the talented folks at Studio Choo and luminous photos from Mastin Studio, the day was casually elegant and as breathtaking as the landscape surrounding them.

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding? First, authenticity. We wanted every element of the wedding to feel real, not intimidating or formal. From the photography, to the food, to the flowers we kept things simple and honest. Second, we wanted people to be completely taken care of at every moment. We put ourselves in the guests’ shoes throughout the planning process and designed an event for them (making sure that wed still enjoy ourselves). And third, Peter and I both love to dance, so the band had to be amazing!

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? Both Peter and I put friends and family before everything else in our lives.  And this came through in our wedding – it was, in a way, our religion. We had our mutual best friend marry us, our mothers gave the readings, and Peters cousins performed a song. For us, the joining of the families was most important. My family is predominantly Jewish so we threw in a few Jewish traditions as well – the breaking of the glass and the hora because theyre both fun and meaningful to us. Otherwise we kept it simple, no cutting of the cake or throwing of the bouquet – nothing that would distract people from just having a great time.

Where there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? Why and how did you do that? People dont usually interact with the guests during the ceremony, but in the spirit of authenticity, we didnt want our wedding to feel like a play that people had come to watch – like we were up on a stage not acknowledging our audience. We planned for some interaction – before we read our vows, Peter addressed our family and friends, thanking them directly for being there. It turned out though that we hadnt needed to plan the audience interaction. We are a family of criers. And when I got down the aisle at the beginning of the ceremony, Peter was in tears. He looked out at our friends and family and said Am I the only one crying? Everyone, including us, burst out laughing. It broke the silence, and the barrier between us and them – which set the tone for the whole ceremony. It was perfect.

What was your biggest wedding planning success?  Im pleased that wedding blogs like Junebug are interested in our photos, since I declared many times that I was not getting married for the blogs. Its fun to see the pictures of the little details, but I pushed myself NOT to get obsessed with all of the little DIY things.  Im proud that we were able to create an event that was detailed and beautiful, without feeling overly complicated or stressing me out.

What was the most important thing that you learned through the wedding planning process and what would you tell other brides-to-be? This process is all about trust. The challenges youll have with your families will be around issues where one party doesnt trust the other. The challenges you have with vendors is when you don’t trust them and feel the need to be overly involved. Pick vendors you trust and let them make decisions. And try to get the pain points with your family and fiance out in the open early in the process. Itll keep you sane.

Romantic Flower Crowns – A Fresh Wedding Tradition! – Twigss Floral Studio

June 26, 2012 | editorial team

I’ve been noticing flower crowns blossoming on both the runway and in real weddings this spring, and can’t think of a better way to add a little romance and whimsy to your wedding day look! I had the pleasure of talking with the oh-so-talented Addison Searles of Twigss Floral Studio about the beautiful floral head wreaths they’ve been making for their brides and how flowers are the perfect way to top off your wedding style!

Why should brides consider a floral head crown? Tell us about why you suggest floral head wreaths to your clients. We love that head wreaths are an old custom. They represent honor, virtue and the changing of seasons, which we think is really cool. And although they are an older custom and have some deeper meanings, we believe they add a new, fun and fresh spin to a bride’s overall look on her wedding day. They are something that we encourage our brides to wear because we love crafting them, each on is so unique and special. There is a lot of detail and time that goes into making these special pieces – they arent your average daisy chain! we also tell brides that its the perfect excuse to wear flowers in your hair! Think about it…how often do you have a good excuse to do that?

Can you still carry a bouquet when you have a head wreath? Totally! In fact we recommend it because the more flowers the better in our opinion. Another great thing about a head wreath is that if you love flowers (like we do) then during your reception you can be hands free and still be rockin some amazing blooms. But for those brides that dont want to go flower crazy, they could totally just wear the head wreath and not fuss with a bouquet.

Do brides usually wear a veil with the head crown? Not with the head wreaths weve been making. I think that it really depends on the bride and her style though. Veils would be a beautiful touch and add more of a vintage look to a head wreath. We are always open to whatever is special or sentimental to the bride!

Are there different looks you can create with a floral head wreath, besides the typical sweet, romantic vibe? Are there ways that you can make the head wreath elegant or modern? Oh yes! That is our favorite part; there are so many options! Weve made an amazingly cool hippy-chic one, with daisy, clover hops, bachelor buttons and wild sweet peas. Weve made a beachy one, with sword ferns, sea shells, and garden roses; and an elegant one with ostrich feathers, rhinestones and roses. The possibilities are truly endless!

Addison, thank you so much for the great flower crown traditions and ideas! Readers, are you wearing one this summer? We’d love to hear about it!
