Like most girls, I go weak in the knees at the sight of a sparkly stone. I really love them all, but I’m going to play favorites today, and admit that I’m particularly partial to antique jewels and vintage engagement rings. What three adjectives best describe your wedding day? Laid-back, cozy, and whimsical.
Was there a decor theme that ran through your wedding? What was the inspiration for that particular idea and how did it reflect you as a couple? We did not have a particular decor theme for our wedding. However, like many brides-to-be these days, I was constantly browsing Pinterest and got a lot of inspiration from there!
What were some of the different ways you used decor elements to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning? A lot of our decorations were created from things we picked up at antique and thrift stores. From the sheets on the hay bale seats to the dishes used for dinner and the vintage books and trinkets used as centerpieces, so much of what was used that day had a previous history. The vases and containers used for the flowers were also found at antique and thrift stores. Our fantastic florist used a lot of lavender and babys breath – which was simple and smelled heavenly! The market lights we purchased from a vendor online and we really loved what they added to the ambiance after the sunset.
Where did you choose to hold your wedding, and how did the location influence your decor decisions? We decided to have our wedding at my parents house. They were so wonderful to open up their home to all of our friends and family who traveled so far to celebrate with us. Their home is a large cabin surrounded by prairie and farmland and with a small creek running behind it: the place has a lot of beauty and character of its own, so decorating it was easy to do. A lot of the decorations we used were found on the property – like a vintage sewing table, an old door, the spools the hors d’oeuvres were served on, and the cattle gates we used as part of the backdrop for the ceremony.
Looking back, do you have a favorite project or successful decor idea from your wedding? Tell us what you loved about it! We wanted our wedding to be a day where those we loved were involved and felt part of it rather than just bystanders, and that is exactly what happened. Scotts parents made the wine, our friends made homebrewed beer and sangria, and various friends and family contributed to the dessert table. My dad, brothers, and brother-in-laws all worked so hard to help set up the site of the ceremony – and it turned out perfect. And so many friends and family were there that morning to help set up for the celebration. We feel so blessed to have so many people in our lives that were willing to contribute so much to our day. The personal touches that were added by all the important people in our lives are what we love most about our wedding – and we would not change a thing about it!
