After meeting in graduate school at Washington University, Sadie and Lilly fell in love and became the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in St. Louis, Missouri! Their amazing journey to the alter consisted of many DIY projects and gathering countless mix-matched candles. Love and Perry beautifully documented the couple’s stunning and bright rustic wedding at Three Barn Farm in Clarksville, Missouri.
I proposed to Sadie at Chez Pannisse in Berkeley California, and our wedding colors were inspired by our menu that evening – sage, persimmon and champagne. DIY wedding projects swiftly became my relaxation, and sometimes procrastination, activity; I spent much of my free time hunting for the perfect crystal glass to make into a candle, sanding and painting windows for signs, and wood burning our initials into an oak letter box. I promised myself (but mostly my wife) that if the projects started to stress me out I would call it quits, but every project brought on new ideas and heightened my excitement for our big day.
From Lilly: After spending last summer in the United Kingdom, my heart was set on wearing a gown by designer Catherine Deane. Luckily, she has a wide selection of her dresses available through BHLDN and I was able to wear her Sian gown which perfectly matched our outdoor, elegant yet still casual ceremony. Helping Sadie find the perfect wedding outfit was a priority for me as clothing for androgynous women can be a challenge. We stumbled upon Bindle & Keep in Brooklyn and fell in love. They made us feel so comfortable and made the perfect suit for her, down to the last detail. Sadie definitely stole the show walking down the aisle last in her custom suit and coral bow tie which matchedthe ranunculus and my ballet flats perfectly!
The Moments:
One of our favorite moments of the night was getting whisked away by our photographers for some couples shots at dusk. We finally enjoyed some quiet moments away from the crowd. Truly savoring the moment was so special, and we can’t thank our photographers, Love + Perry, enough for capturing our special day! The night concluded with the releasing of a paper lantern, a tradition at Three Barn Farm. Sadie and I made our wishes and hopes for the future and our guests watched as they floated up into the cloudless night sky. We could not have asked for a more perfect day with our loved ones.
The Couple Recommends:
Working with Love and Perry was a huge privilege. They were so friendly, fun, and down to earth. Sadie and I loved working with Brittney and Shana because they made us feel comfortable and we 110% trusted them to capture our special day. They took the time to get to know our personalities and style and it is truly reflected in our photos. After two frightening flights, a long drive, and lots of Midwestern humidity they were there waiting for us, pumped for the day. It doesn’t get much better than that!
A marching band, a ski lift, and two perfectly preppy madras sports coats are just a few of our favorite elements from Geoff and Sean’s Wes Anderson inspired wedding at Squaw Valley. The couple reminisced about their summer camp days as they began planning a wedding influenced by the East Coast vibes of Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Vitae Weddings documented the joyous camp-inspired celebration and every sweet moment shared by the newlyweds on their big day. We especially love their ski lift kiss!
An initial inspiration for our wedding was Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” with its golden East Coast summer camp vibe. As we pictured our big day, we kept coming back to memories of summer camp, hunting lodges, and the classic preppy style of Maine and the Cape.
From the grooms: We loved the music throughout the multi day event, especially the march from the Tram to the reception as the band played Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” with our guests, strangers and the cake in tow. We had a lot of great folks participate and it set a great vibe.
The Moments:
If I needed to distill to one moment it would be the 30 minutes we had just prior to the ceremony for photographs at the top of Squaw (and the 30 minutes after the ceremony). We roamed around with our photographers in a state of bliss. It was a nice quiet pause.
The Couple Recommends:
We cannot thank Mark McCullough, Ariel Sutro, Caitlyn McSorley, and Jessica Greenleaf enough for vision and support to execute this event. We had worked previously with Mark and Ariel on design projects and they nailed this for us!
A special thanks to Vitae Weddings for sharing Geoff and Sean’s preppy California wedding with Junebug! Planning a summer camp wedding of your own? Check out Samantha and Kieran’s summer camp inspired wedding at Camp Geronimo for more ideas!
