Madeira was number one on my travel bucket list for years, listed right there on my Airbnb profile under “the place I most want to visit next.” So when an invitation landed in my inbox to tour the island’s top wedding venues, excitement felt like an understatement.

As a wedding publication in business since 2008, we have watched a lot of trends bloom and fade. But one shift has only continued to grow. More and more couples are choosing to elope or host destination weddings, trading local celebrations for something altogether more memorable–a wedding that doubles as an unforgettable experience for every single guest who makes the trip.

Few places succeed so completely as both a dream wedding backdrop and a destination worth traveling to in its own right. Madeira, Portugal, is one of them. What follows is our introduction to the island–and to the venues that make it one of the most exciting places in the world to get married.

Madeira, An Introduction

A lush, volcanic island set out into the North Atlantic, Madeira is something of an open secret among Europeans and well-traveled adventure seekers, though it remains largely undiscovered by many American couples. Which is exactly what makes it so compelling. You’ve seen the Mexico destination wedding, the Tuscany toasts, the Hawaiian vows at sunset, maybe even the moody Scottish castle. But a Madeira wedding? That’s for the couple always pushing for something newer, something fresher, something that will genuinely take their guests’ breath away.

Known as ‘The Island of Eternal Spring,’ Madeira boasts a temperate climate and sun-filled days for the vast majority of the year. For couples planning a destination wedding, that kind of reliable weather is a gift.

The landscape is unlike anything most guests will have encountered before. Think towering green mountains disappearing into clouds, dense rainforest, dramatic volcanic terrain, all with infrastructure that makes getting around genuinely easy. A single road trip takes you from moody, cliff-lined coastlines reminiscent of Ireland on the east, up to the mist-shrouded mountains and cascading waterfalls of the north, west to open skies perfect for golden sunsets, and back south to Funchal, a thriving, architecturally stunning European city full of history and life.

Beyond the scenery, there’s the culture. When guests aren’t hiking trails, swimming in natural lava pools, or losing themselves in the forest, they can be sipping poncha at a local pub, touring world-class wineries, exploring sweeping botanical gardens, or taking the island’s legendary wicker basket ride down a winding hillside road. Madeira is a place where the itinerary practically writes itself.

Our Top Five Madeira Wedding Venues

What makes Madeira so special as a wedding destination isn’t just the scenery–it’s also the people. Madeirans are so welcoming and kind, and that hospitality extends to the island’s wedding venues, many of which have organized hundreds of celebrations and know exactly how to take destination planning off your plate. Whether you’re dreaming of ocean cliffs, a secluded northern estate, or a grand luxury hotel, Madeira has a venue for you. Here are our five favorites.

Belmond Reid’s Palace

Wedding capacity: Up to 250 guests
Who it’s for: Couples who prioritize aesthetics

For the couple who wants their wedding venue to feel like a discovery–somewhere historic and layered with character yet polished enough to feel entirely of the moment–Belmond Reid’s Palace is in a category of its own. Perched on a clifftop in Funchal overlooking the Atlantic, this legendary property carries the kind of old-world coastal charm that makes every corner feel like a photo opp.

Part of the Belmond portfolio of iconic luxury hotels, Reid’s Palace has a long and distinguished history of hosting discerning guests and marquee events. That history shows in the thoughtful way the property is laid out for celebrations. The intimate Palm Garden suits smaller ceremonies and cocktail gatherings, while the Rooftop Terrace scales up beautifully for larger groups. For dinner, the Dining Room opens into adjoining spaces to seat up to 250, and the House of Commons and Villa Cipriani round out the options for evening events. Whatever the moment calls for, there is a space for it here.

Casa Velha do Palheiro

Wedding capacity: Up to 100 guests
Who it’s for: Golf and garden lovers

There is a particular kind of couple who will feel immediately at home at Casa Velha do Palheiro–one that appreciates craft, heritage, and the kind of atmosphere that only comes from a place that has been carefully tended across generations. Set within the Palheiro Nature Estate, this intimate five-star hotel is also home to one of Madeira’s most celebrated golf courses, making it an exceptional choice for the wedding party where the green is just as important as the aisle.

The hotel itself opened as one of Madeira’s first five-star inns in 1997, and its 33 rooms and five suites each have their own distinct personality. At its heart is Oxalis Restaurant, widely regarded as one of the finest dining experiences on the island. For couples planning an intimate, nature-immersed celebration with extraordinary food, standout hospitality, and a sense of story woven into every detail, Casa Velha do Palheiro is a rare find.

Quinta do Furao

Wedding capacity: Up to 300 guests
Who it’s for: Couples prioritizing views and seclusion

If you’ve ever wanted to get married somewhere that feels genuinely removed from the rest of the world, Quinta do Furão is it. Perched above the Atlantic on a cliff-top vineyard in Santana on the northeast coast, the property sits on one of the most dramatic landscapes on the island, with sweeping views over the ocean and the entire northeastern coastline below.

The North Coast is where Madeira’s truest identity lives—where customs and traditions are still woven into everyday community life, where nature feels untouched, and where the island’s more intimate, unhurried character reveals itself. For guests who want to experience the real Madeira alongside the celebration, this is the venue that delivers.

A small on-site bakery turns out fresh bread daily, and a large-capacity tent on the grounds makes outdoor celebrations easy regardless of the weather. With views this spectacular and a setting this secluded, Quinta do Furão makes for the kind of wedding that people talk about for decades.

Savoy Palace

Wedding capacity: Up to 1,000 guests
Who it’s for: Large weddings hoping to keep everything under one roof

When scale is the priority, there is only one venue on the island that truly delivers. Savoy Palace is a five-star superior hotel and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, bringing a level of ambition and hospitality infrastructure to Madeira that few destinations anywhere can match. With 309 rooms, six swimming pools, eight restaurants and bars, a 3,100-square-meter spa, and a main event space that can accommodate up to 1,400 people, this is the venue for the couple who refuses to leave anyone off the guest list.

Designed by Madeiran-born interior designer Nini Andrade Silva in partnership with RH+ Arquitectos, Savoy Palace is as much a tribute to the island as it is a luxury hotel. Details throughout draw from Madeira’s most iconic natural and cultural touchstones. Even the spa’s cave passages feel like a journey through the landscape itself.

For large families, multi-day celebrations, or weddings that simply require a venue with the resources to handle anything, Savoy Palace stands in a league of its own.

Nini Andrade Silva Design Center

Wedding capacity: Up to 350 guests seated or 600 standing
Who it’s for: Couples seeking a sleek, contemporary, arthouse vibe

The last venue on our list is a little different, as it isn’t a hotel at all, but instead a truly special event space. The Nini Andrade Silva Design Centre is a historic waterfront building in Funchal, once home to Gonçalo Zarco, the Portuguese navigator who first colonized the Madeira Archipelago. Today it belongs to Nini Andrade Silva, one of the world’s most celebrated interior designers, who has transformed it into a multi-use cultural space unlike anything else on the island.

The space blends design, art, gastronomy, and maritime history into one. A permanent exhibition showcases Nini’s private collection and celebrates Madeira’s seafaring past. There is a restaurant with sweeping Atlantic views, a lounge, and a café. The industrial bones of the building, with high ceilings, raw textures, and dramatic volume, pair with the refined design sensibility to create an aesthetic wholly its own. Part art house, part warehouse, part gallery, entirely unforgettable.
