Urban Botanic

June 8, 2007 | editorial team

I got together the other night with the lovely Kelsey from Urban Botanic as she had offered to introduce me to their products and help me create my very own customized scent. It was so much fun! The first step was taking the online personality test to find a starting point. (I’m a “fruity” personality: friendly, committed, hard working and self aware. Nice!) When we got together I was supremely impressed with Kelsey’s know-how. As one little bottle of oil after another came out of her kit we began smelling them all and discussing good combinations. Once I narrowed it down to about three favorites from each scent category the real fun began! We sat and mixed together all kinds of concoctions trying to come up with the one that really grabbed me. My final product was a heavenly blend of equal parts water lily, tomato leaf, and Egyptian musk. I love it, and can’t wait for an excuse to plan an Urban Botanic party for all my girlfriends. I’m not usually a home party kind of girl but this was some seriously addicting fun. Contact Kelsey, [email protected], for ideas on how to create an Urban Botanic get together for your bridal shower or bachelorette party anywhere in the country, or to purchase a DIY oil kit to play with at home.

Best of all, Kelsey is giving away a free personalized parfum spray to one of our Junebug readers! Just send me an e-mail or leave a comment with your contact info describing your all time favorite scents (mine are coffee, anything baking, lemon verbena and the house I grew up in) and the most fun description at the end of next week will win!

  1. Yum! I love fruity scents too…tropicals especially. In the kitchen I love vanilla and nutmeg and maple syrup and espresso beans. And how could I leave out Buttercream…or cream cheese frosted carrot cake cupcakes! I think that’s a good start of all my favorite scents!

  2. My fav scents are all floral- lilac, lily of the valley, rose, gardenia. Easy for perfume!

  3. i had a chance to sit down a few years ago with a woman who had her own perfume line and it was amazing to talk to her about scent! she really knew her stuff and was soooo aware of smell all the time. it was so cool, and totally changed the way i have thought about scent ever since. as for favorites…. my clothes after a day at the beach or a night around a bonfire– one whiff takes you back immediately. lilac like the one in my back yard growing up. good leather that hasn’t been doused with a bunch of chemicals– it’s musky and spicy and masculine. freshly cut grass. roasting garlic!! ok, maybe not for perfume, but delicious! my bed two days after i washed the sheets– it still smells clean and crisp, but also like me. there is almost nothing more comforting. almost any sweet baked good while in the oven– lemon, cinnamon, vanilla. mmmmmm……

  4. Oh, this is fun! I love the smell at the back of a baby’s neck, my pillow when I flip it to the cold side, sharp sweet citrus, tropical air after a torrential rain, antique books, new cars, and the musky scent of fallen autumn leaves. Blair

  5. Fun! I love the smell of the ocean, old fashioned roses, fresh lavender, honeysuckle, my husband :), our new puppy, coffee, and chocolate chip cookies just out of the oven… mmmm.

  6. One of my favorite scents is the smell of rain after a long dry spell. I found out yesterday in an entirely serendipitous bit of Web browsing that there’s a word for that scent: petrichor.

  7. Congratulations to Jody!!! She’s the winner of an Urban Botanic personalized parfum spray!
