Elegant Plum, White, and Gray Atlanta Wedding at Summerour Studio – Jacquelyn and Adam

July 6, 2012 | editorial team

Jacquelyn and Adam’s sophisticated color palette of plum, white and gray was the perfect complement to the rustic ambiance at the repurposed newspaper building where they held their happy wedding day. I love the contrast of their elegant decor with the steel windows and crumbling bricks of Summerour Studio. And while the juxtaposition of refined and rustic is nothing new, they added plenty of touches – such as a tuxedo-clad pug and a gourmet popsicle truck – to make the day completely their own!

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding? Our top three priorities were: first and foremost, selecting a venue that fit our personality and had distinct character and style; second, creating a party-like atmosphere rather than a formal event; and finally, selecting vendors that were able to translate our visions into reality in a way that truly reflected our own taste and style.

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? Virtually every facet of our wedding event was planned in a non-traditional manner… from wedding playlist to open seating. However, we were steadfast in our commitment to not see one another the day of the wedding until the ceremony. We each sequestered ourselves in hotels across town from one another the night before and did not see each other again until the wedding processional. The anticipation, excitement, (and Adams reaction) were well worth the wait.

Where there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? Why and how did you do that? We broke the rule of tradition when we elected to get married in an old newspaper factory! We also skirted tradition with our choice to skip readings, but instead write letters to one another that our reverend would hold as secret until their ceremony reveal. We also wrote our own vows. We had open seating at tables, hi-boys, and lounge chairs was a bit surprising for guests, but the icing on the cake was when coffee hour was replaced with a visit from King of Pops and his gourmet popsicle cart. Oh, and did we mention that our 19lb. pug, Dexter, was our ring bearer? Need we say more about breaking the rules?

What was your biggest wedding planning success? Simply put, we achieved our dream wedding! From hand-selecting every piece of music played, to choosing a caterer that people are still talking about, a designer that brought our vision to life, a photographer that captured our joy in each moment, a reverend that embodied our values, and a venue that will forever be uniquely ours.

What was the most important thing that you learned through the wedding planning process and what would you tell other brides-to-be? Create and adhere to a realistic budget. Whatever you estimate initially, add 25%.

Honeymoon Travel in Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming

July 5, 2012 | editorial team

Grand Teton National Park - Sunglow Photography | Junebug Weddings

Inspired by Laura and Greg’s wedding in breathtaking Grand Teton National Park that we featured this morning, and my own time there last summer, I wanted to share a few of the many wonderful things to do in the area. When I was there, I was blown away by the number of couples on their honeymoon going hiking, rafting, dining – even playing in the snow in July! This popular destination has it all – amazing scenery, outdoor activities, luxury accomodations and gourmet restaurants to fill you up after a long day of adventures in the pristine Tetons.

Grand Teton National Park is adjacent to Jackson Hole (the valley and resort area) and Jackson (the quaint downtown area just down the road from the ski slopes). I love how you can feel miles away from civilization at the park, and return to a luxurious hotel and great restaurant for the evening. Of course, there are plentiful camping opportunities as well! Below are some of my favorite area attractions and accommodations.

To-Do: O.K. I have to admit something. Before going, I was honestly skeptical. I’m from Washington; I’ve seen mountains! Big ones! But once there, I realized I had not seen MOUNTAINS! The Tetons are majestic, sharp, and towering; not to mention teeming with wildlife. There are easy ways to adventure out into the great outdoors, and big, backcountry hikes for more entrepid souls. But even driving through this beautiful area, you can’t miss those peaks nor the lush valleys and sparkling lakes that surround them. And if you see a crowd of cars, pulled over? Join them and ask what they see! It’s exactly how I managed to watch a mother grizzly and her two cubs doing somersaults. From my safe vantage point, they were like living teddy bears, and a sight I will never forget.

Aerial Tram at Jackson Hole Resort
The Aerial Tram at Jackson Hole Resort gains over 4000 vertical feet in 12 minutes!

  • Hike the Jenny Lake Trail to Inspiration Point – watch for wildlife along the way! On the Moose Ponds portion of the trail I saw – what else – a mother moose and her baby snacking on willows in a bog. Along the way I also spotted marmots, birds, ground squirrels, and brilliant wildflowers.
  • Ride the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram from Teton Village to the top of the Jackson Hole Resort. If you are skiing, this is how you get on the slopes. But in the summer, it offers spectacular views of alder groves and wildlife as you gain over 4,000 vertical feet in 12 minutes. You can stay as long as you’d like at the top, but do bring a sweater. We played in the snow on July 4th! Locals recommend grabbing a waffle and hot chocolate at one of the restaurants at the top.

  • While my friends were enjoying adrenaline overload, I took my land-loving self to the National Museum of Wildlife Art, just outside Jackson. Unlike any other, the museum has over 5,000 pieces from more than 550 artists all featuring animals of some sort. I’ve spent a lot of time in museums, and this one made my top-3 list!
  • Other popular summer activities include fishing, canoeing, and mountain biking. In the winter, the slopes rule! Dog sledding tours and cross-country skiing are a great way to enjoy the snowy scenery at a slower pace.

To Eat: Another admission…food is really why I travel! Let’s get to the important stuff.

Casual Eating On-The-Go

  • Creekside Market and Deli – a wonderful inexpensive stop for luch with incredible sandwiches. This was one of Laura and Greg’s favorites!
  • Leek’s Pizza – If you are in the park and need a break from camp food or national park dining rooms, Leek’s is the place for great pizza. Located inside of Grand Teton National Park, Leek’s is busy and bustling, and you’ll feel like you’re a local while eating a hot, cheesy pie in the rustic dining room.

Fine Dining

  • Couloir Restaurant – Located at the summit of the Jackson Hole ski area/tram, Couloir offers a serious view served up with locally sourced and seasonal dishes. Their signature specialties are house smoked tenderloin of buffalo and a dessert tasting.

  • Snake River Grill – Offering an almost completely organic menu, the Snake River Grill offers upscale mountain dining. Think local trout, elk chops, juicy steaks; potatoes seasoned with local ramps and artisan ricotta. I think I’m hungry.
  • Wild Sage at The Rusty Parrot Lodge – An award-winning restaurant, located in downtown Jackson at an award-winning luxury lodge. Wild Sage is intimate and cozy with a massive river rock fireplace and seating for just 32. Meals are memorable and fascinating, as you’ll dine with a full view of the exhibition kitchen.

To Stay:

  • Amangani – Amangani means “Peaceful Home”. With magnificent view of the Tetons and the Snake River valley, and modern yet warm decor, I can’t imagine how you wouldn’t find peace at Amangani.

  • Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole – I don’t know if I have to say much; The Four Seasons does a pretty amazing job with all of their properties. Their Jackson Hole outpost does rustic with huge doses of elegance and luxury mixed in.
  • Rustic Inn – Located on several acres, just blocks from downtown Jackson Hole, and adjacent to the National Elk Refuge, the Rustic Inn offers a luxurious lodge and lavishly appointed cabins that are far from rustic!

I truly loved the week I spend in the Tetons, and the perfect blend of rustic natural beauty and elegant luxury the area offers. We’d love to hear about your favorite Teton haunts if you’ve been lucky enough to visit. Drop us a note!

Rustic Grand Teton National Park Elopement – Laura and Greg

July 5, 2012 | editorial team

Laura and Greg’s elopement in breathtaking Grand Teton National Park reflected not just their love for each other, but also their shared passion for the outdoors, snowy mountain peaks and sparkling rivers. They brought Dustin Prickett of Sunglow Photography along for the days leading up to their ceremony, to document each memorable moment, the striking landscape, and even a moose! We’re so lucky to get a glimpse of their intimate, romantic adventure, and if you are inspired to plan your own trip to the Grand Tetons, check back later today for another post on some of the local highlights of this favorite honeymoon destination!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding? Intimate, adventurous, minimalist

How did you select your wedding location? What drew you to the Tetons? We first traveled to the Tetons in the summer of 2008, after we had been dating for a little over a year, during an extended seven-week backpacking trip to various national parks. As soon as we decided to elope, we knew that it would be reminiscent and meaningful to go back to one of places that we visited during this trip, and we settled on Grand Teton National Park. In the Tetons, we remembered hiking through some of the most picturesque mountain landscapes and were amazed by the beauty of the snow-capped mountains, expansive rivers and lakes, and of course perfect back country camp sites. We also knew that the near-by town of Jackson would provide ample choices of hotels, restaurants, and other entertainment.

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? In the end, we both wanted a big day that was meaningful and romantic, yet simple and low-stress. For us, an elopement ceremony achieved exactly this. The specific spot we chose at Schwabachers Landing also provided an ideal natural venue – one that fit our personalities and rendered a fitting backdrop. And though we had envisioned how the ceremony might go, many of the smaller details fell into place the day before, or even the moments before, the ceremony. For example, when we decided that our ideal spot for the ceremony was on a small peninsula reachable only across a small stream, Greg and the photographer built an aisle bridge out of logs found along the trail, which we all had to cross to get to this perfect spot. Seeing details come together in this way not only made it very special for us in the moment, but made for great pictures too! It was this simplicity and flexibility that made the day feel so uniquely us.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Because our wedding was an elopement and did not have an audience, we were so happy we decided to bring our photographer along to document the first two days of our trip rather than having just a few hours of photography on our wedding day. Our photos really tell our wedding story, from arriving at the airport, to signing the marriage license, to the ceremony and the post-wedding hike. This was very important to us because we wanted to have a way to share our special day with our loved ones. We both agree that a favorite memory from the ceremony was when we read our vows that we had written to each other. The lack of distractions leading up to and during the ceremony enabled us to really focus on each other, and our big moment!

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? I would tell any bride not to get overwhelmed by other peoples expectations for your wedding. Focus on the things that are most important to you and your new life with your love, and dont sweat the small stuff!
