I’ve seen (and tasted!) a lot of amazing wedding cakes in my years in the wedding industry, but I must say that I have never seen any quite like these! Portland, Oregon wedding cake designer Marcella Robin of MRobin Cake Design draws on her background as a sculptor and visual artist to bake “entremet” style wedding cakes that are absolute works of art! According to Marcella, entremet cakes are made with an outer layer of decorative sponge cake which allows for her creative, modern designs, and inside layers of mousse, bavaroise, dacquoise, sponge cake, caramels, fruit and other fillings. Tiana and Brandon were wed in a gorgeous Southern California wedding ceremony that perfectly coincided with the Harvest Moon suspended overhead. They included as many aspects as possible from their everyday lives into their ceremony, from Brandon’s love for finding the perfect song, to Tiana’s family home and her love for welcoming guests with an amazing meal. From Bride Tiana: From the moment Brandon and I became engaged, I knew I wanted to get married under a Harvest Moon. We were married at my Dads house in Lafayette, an Italian-inspired villa atop a hill. We worked hard to make the night a beautiful celebration that was unforgettable but relaxing too. We started with the rustic and homey feel of the house my father built, and added in some modern floral arrangements and an amazing Asian-inspired menu. Some of our favorite components of the wedding we designed were our cake by Katrina Rozelle, beautiful stationery from Bella Figura, and great music for Brandon, who lives his life to a soundtrack I think!
When I was dress shopping, I fell in love with two dresses…a gorgeous Sarah Seven, and Diana by Vera Wang. I ended up wearing the short, strapless Sarah Seven to our rehearsal, and the Vera Wang to the wedding. I wore my husbands baptism ring on a simple gold chain – his mom had worn all of her childrens baptism rings on one chain and given me Brandons when we became engaged.
I think the first dance was the first time I took a real breath – and then as soon as I breathed him in – I felt like I had come home…after a really long trip or something. And dancing with my dad to Butterfly Kisses was something so sweet – even though I had imagined it all before.
I loved the classical mash-up my violist came up with that featured Ave Maria. When I arrived at the altar, by brother began the ceremony with two awesome words – Hakuna Matata! I couldnt have asked for a better officiant. Another favorite part of the night was swaying to Journeys The City with sparklers as the sun set.
Our biggest success? People are still commenting on how much fun they had. Thats how we know that all the hard work my Dad and friends and family put in really made the difference. We worked tirelessly to put personal touches throughout the wedding. From the wine bottle chandeliers to the landscaping and the wedding and ceremony spots – it truly was a group effort. Everything felt like organized chaos – and gave us such a great feeling of success when the wedding day finally arrived.

When you work with couples, where do you like to begin the design process with them? What kinds of inspiration do you like to pull from?When we work with couples (or anyone else for that matter), our process begins by visiting the event site and listening to their needs. Once we then know all the variables (guest size, performances, etc) our inspiration starts with the natural landscape of the site. From there, we conceptualize a plan to accentuate the beautiful elements of the site and distract from (or cover) the negatives. This initial on site inspiration is then combined with the collective imagination of our design team which always leads to some very unique and beautiful design proposals for our clients.
What are some simple tips you can give to couples about using lighting, furniture and creative structures to create atmosphere in an empty event space?When you create an atmosphere to fill an empty event site, we are firm believers in incorporating your surroundings onto your event. The common practice of bringing a large enclosed tent and lining it with drapery and flowers to create this sort of theater inside of a box, is neither beautiful, natural or pleasant to us. If you are getting married outside, think outside the box and don’t be afraid to follow your instincts. Sometimes, the most unusual locations combined with good design make for the most striking weddings.
