Couples hire you because…
My couples tend to have weddings that are pretty unique and not necessarily traditional. My approach works super well with people who don't want to fuss too much over strict timelines and aren't so interested in thinking about shotlists, but are interested in getting artful photographs.
But whatever the format, I approach each wedding day as a friend and as an artist. I like to think I am like a cousin with a camera at your wedding! I know I am on the right track when guests start asking me how I know the couple. I work best when I feel like I'm part of the party. I see my job as being able to get in the mix so I can notice what's happening, rather than orchestrate moments. (Except for if you have an amazing veil, we are gonna have to make some art with that thing!!)
Most of my couples appreciate the phrase "your wedding day is not a photoshoot" and I am constantly checking in with my couples after the family photos part of the day because it can be a lot! But I also inevitably fall in love with my couples and truly cherish that little pocket of a day where I get to make pictures of them being in love and looking gorgeous. Saying that, we don't really have to go out of our way to make good images. You're perfect already.
I firmly believe your wedding day should be whatever you want it to be. The only rule is that you enjoy it.
What achievement, moment, or success are you most proud of in your career?
The very first wedding I ever photographed was featured on The Anti-Bride!
What aspect of your job never ceases to give you butterflies or make you excited?
Getting film scans back from the lab! It's like Christmas morning every single time.
What is your specialty or personal style?
35mm and 120 medium format film! While I shoot hybrid now, I started doing photography professionally using film rather than digital, so it really is my comfort medium.
My personal style is warm, friendly, and casual, but professional and unassuming. I am fun and gregarious but not overbearing and I know how and when to disappear to let you have your own moments.
