We are so excited to share Amy and Scott’s incredible Costa Rican adventure with you today! This spirited couple took their closest family and friends on a week-long jungle safari that was filled with tropical rainstorms, brilliant flora and fauna, waterfalls and natural water slides, rafting and horseback riding activities, and of course, a completely romantic wedding. Enjoy this glimpse into their destination wedding celebration, from Beautiful Day Photography!

The Goals: Amy said, “Scott and I are both very close to our families, and felt that it was important that they have the opportunity to get to know each other during our celebration. Having the wedding in Costa Rica, and at Rafiki in particular due to its remote location, encouraged instantaneous bonding that will last a lifetime. We were over 4,000 miles from distraction, and it was truly a family affair. I think the families thought we were slightly crazy for wanting to have our wedding in the remote tropical jungle, and were admittedly slightly out of their comfort zones when they first got there. But almost a year later, we all talk about the adventure and how incredible it was, all the time! Additionally, Scott and I love nature and adventure, so Rafiki fit the bill!”

The Design: The wedding was romantic, rustic, and entirely unique! Amy bravely booked The Rafiki sight unseen, on the glowing reviews that Scott had given her about this special place as early as their first date. The Rafiki is an adventurous destination; not an all-inclusive luxury resort, but a back-to-nature collection of safari tents in the rainforest. Amy and Scott knew that they’d be surrounded by incredible native flora and fauna, so they let the naturally stunning rainforest be their main decor. The couple hosted a reception a few weeks later for friends back home at the Salish Lodge, so the forest (this time temperate) was once again a starring feature. There they gave guests white potted orchids at the reception as a nod to the beautiful Costa Rican forest they had been married in.

The Look: Amy wanted a bridal look that was simple, elegant, and un-embellished. She turned to one of her favorite dress shops, The Finerie, for a gorgeous Madina Vadache evening dress that was customized with a beautiful low-back and a more traditional ivory silk than the original black color the dress came in. From there, she accessorized with blue earrings made by her aunt to match Scott’s suit, and wore ginger flowers in her hair. As for her hair and make-up, Amy describes her photographer, Laura from Beautiful Day Photography, as a Renaissance woman! Laura was worried about timing, and wanted to get good photos before the expected rainstorm, so she jumped in and did Amy’s hair and make-up to keep things moving. (Amy also revealed that Laura jumped in and sang “Proud Mary” with Fuzzy and the band at the reception…Renaissance woman indeed!)

The Moments: While Amy said she’d be hard pressed to beat the experience of exchanging vows with the love of her life under a fern and orchid covered arch with the misty rainforest and mountains in the background, she did have some hilarious and exciting stories from their wedding-week jungle adventure! Over the course of their stay, they took their group on a class 4 white water rafting trip; had multiple impromptu feasts in the rainforest; slid down natural stone water slides (during the daytime, AND in the pitch black, post-wedding reception!); went horseback riding; and organized a rescue mission to fetch the wine and champagne that was stuck on the other side of the river when a road washed out. Whew!

Stylish Spring NYC Engagement Shoot – Alison Conklin Photography

May 10, 2012 | editorial team

With a combination of great style, super-sweet chemistry, and the fabulous photographers Alison and Geoff of Alison Conklin Photography, Mallorie and Dan’s New York City engagement shoot is amazing! Incredibly stylish, romantic and authentic all at once. Enjoy!

From Photographer Alison Conklin: On the surface they might seem like an unlikely pair, Daniel from Pennsylvania and raised Catholic and Mallorie from New York, raised Jewish. They met at the University of Delaware both sharing the same major and having mutual friends. The first time Daniel talked to Mallorie online he signed off with: I love you. I guess he knew. For 5 years they commuted from PA to NY, from NJ to NY, until finally uniting in NYC to live. They stood the test of time as they both matured and grew and when Daniel proposed on bended knee in September, there were no differences left between them. He uttered the same words he felt the first time, I loved you from the moment I first saw you.

From Bride-to-be Mallorie: Originally, our engagement session was scheduled for February, as Dan proposed at the end of September. Unfortunately, we had missed the Fall foliage and were headed for Winter expecting to catch some amazing shots in the snow. To our surprise there was no snow at all so we changed the shoot to April and we are thrilled with the results.

We had a beautiful 80 degree day with everyone out and about in the city. Alison and Geoff are amazing photographers as well as wonderful people and from the moment we met them we felt comfortable. They have an intrinsic talent for catching couples in their most candid and authentic state and they truly utilized the colorful and artistic backgrounds in the Meatpacking District. We are absolutely in love with the photos and feel they describe our relationship perfectly: we have fun, enjoy each other so much, and most importantly, make each other laugh.

1920s Country Wedding at Pastures of Plenty Farm, Colorado – Melissa and James

May 10, 2012 | editorial team

Today’s country wedding is so charming, colorful, and downright fun that it has me wishing I’d been there. Inspired by her gorgeous flapper style dress, Melissa and James planned a wedding day reminiscent of a rural 1920s celebration, requesting that everyone come in their “Sunday best”. The end result, beautifully captured by Fresh In Love Photography, could not have been any sweeter!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding? 1920s, Rural and Sunday-Best

What was your wedding color palette? Pink and yellow

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? My wedding dress inspired the 1920s theme. We also thought it might be fun and a little different for everyone to match the theme, so we asked people to come in “1920s rural Sunday best”. We really wanted everyone to eat well, drink plenty and have a lot of fun in a beautiful, but casual setting. It was a blast! We were really drawn to this particular venue because the food and almost all of the flowers were local, so it was a farm to table and farm to bouquet concept. I absolutely love sunflowers, so they were the main feature of the decor. Plus, August is sunflower season in Boulder! We realized after setting the wedding date that it was set on the eve of a full moon, which made the night quite lovely.

We added a lot of our own touches to the celebration to make it more personal. James wore his great-grandfather’s hat and I wore my great-grandfather’s pocket watch, which were both from the 1920s. My “something old” was my god-grandmother’s opal ring and my wedding band was melted down from my maternal grandmother and mother’s engagement rings. The croquet set, beautiful old bottles used for the centerpieces, vintage camera, and props for the photo booth came from my mom. James’s heritage is Danish so his grandmother made the Kransekage, which is a Danish celebration cake. It even traveled from Texas in her suitcase!

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? My favorite memory of our day was looking into James’s beautiful blue eyes as he said his vows to me. It truly felt like it was just he and I standing there – and not surrounded by our 100 plus closest friends and family! As he said his vows, I felt his love for me was tangible and just knew that our love was truly something special.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? I believe the more personal touches the couple adds to their wedding, the better. They dont need to be big and over the top. In fact, I find its the little things that the couple has added to be the best. Items or decorations that show more of the couples personality are always fun to see.
