Stylish, Fanciful Wedding Calligraphy

September 20, 2012 | editorial team

Confession time. I pretty much wanted to write this post for my own selfish reasons. Besides pretty fashion and gorgeous flowers, my favorite eye candy to browse around for online is calligraphy. I love the graceful swoops and swirls, whimsical curlicues, and fanciful letters that seem to dance across the paper. I’ve even tried it myself, but the result of quite a few classes was just even more admiration for the amazing talent owned by the pros!

But there is another reason that I’m sharing my calligraphy love with you today. Each of the talented ladies I’m featuring has an individual style that would bring flair and personality to any wedding invitation or paper product. For your guests, receiving a beautifully lettered envelope in the mail starts off the festivities with the message that this will be the most special of events!

Kelle Anne McCarter of Designs Girl reigns supreme in the land of swoops and curls! I love how her writing is super feminine, but still a little bold and sassy. And while she already offers numerous lettering styles, she frequently creates totally new ones to fit the vision of her clients. Amazing!

Tara Bliven of ephemera liberated letterpress is the queen of quirky! While traditionally trained, she brings so much creativity to her calligraphy, and modern, light-hearted letters flow from her pen. Tara also offers custom calligraphy stamps with gorgeous monograms, return addresses, or anything else you can dream up. I am continually amazed at the creative genius of this girl that I so adore!

Holly Hollon is a southern girl whose writing reflects every trait you’d expect…it’s sweet, charming, and full of hospitality! Her custom invitation suites featuring her lovely letters are beautifully composed, with every coordinating piece you could need to make your guests feel special and welcome. From save-the-dates, invitations and RSVP cards, to thank you notes, escort cards…the list just goes on! Each piece she creates is unique and individual, yet complements the others perfectly. She’ll also do envelope addressing and smaller projects if you’re not planning a whole suite. But once you take a look, you might just change your plans!

Laura Hooper is ah-mazing! Though Laura has been a front-runner on the calligraphy scene, her writing is young and fresh. She offers a zillion different styles, each more beautiful than the next. But what she is most well-known for (and rightly so) are her quirky, charming maps. She designs darling illustrations of any destination that can serve as your save-the-date or invitation insert (or even the whole invitation! If I was doing a re-do, I know my map loving husband would insist.) She’ll even craft a map that tracks you and your sweetie through your relationship…from your first meeting in NYC, your memorable trip to Australia, a move to London, engagement in Hawaii, and wedding in Connecticut. Such a cute way to tell your story!

Patricia Mumau of Primele Studio is a creative force to be reckoned with! Two of her great loves, nature and folk art, frequently star in her creations. Not content to just follow the traditional letter forms, she adds twists and turns, and is never afraid to extend a line for a mile. The result is a seemingly impossible blend of tradition and innovation that is all her own. Her signature, always recognizable work is available through Primele Studio and Bella Figura.

Have you fallen in love, as I have? The good news is that geography is not an obstacle. All of these talented ladies will work on designs with you over the phone or through email, and will ship their creations to you. But I don’t envy you the challenge of selecting just one for your wedding day stationery – I adore them all!

Historic Notre Dame Cathedral Wedding – Sara and Daniel

September 20, 2012 | editorial team

Sara and Daniel had quite the story leading up to their Notre Dame wedding (a courtship while students, a cross-country move, and a tree-falling-through-the-roof adventure on the night before Daniel’s proposal), but their wedding day was sunny, sweet, and full of love for each other and their alma mater! Debbie Sprague, of Browne Photography, beautifully captured all the special moments and the gorgeous setting. Enjoy!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding day? Sacred, elegant, and timeless

Was there a decor theme that ran through your wedding? What was the inspiration for that particular idea and how did it reflect you as a couple? My husband and I have always loved Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby and thus, a vintage garden party served as the primary inspiration for our reception.

What were some of the different ways you used decor elements (fashion, flowers, linens, lighting, paper products, food, etc.) to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning? I have to give the credit here to our amazing wedding planner, Cyndi Basker. She played an integral role in taking our vision and making it a reality through all of the beautiful details she came up with.

Where did you choose to hold your wedding, and how did the location influence your decor decisions? As alumni of the University of Notre Dame, campus seemed like the natural venue for our wedding. Notre Dame holds a special place in our hearts, and we feel very blessed to have been married in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Looking back, do you have a favorite project or successful decor idea from your wedding? I loved utilizing lanterns as a second center piece idea. It was elegant and cost-effective!

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding? Venue, Entertainment and Food

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? We got married in the catholic church and while the full mass was much longer than a simple ceremony, it was so worth it – no need to rush this part of your special day!

Family involvement was very important to us. We included them in any way possible. We did the traditional first dance, father-daughter dance and mother-son dance. A lot of weddings we have attended have mixed the father-daughter and mother-son dance together as one. I am so happy we each got our own moment to dance with our parents – I actually wish we had bride/father-in-law and groom/mother-in-law dances too! This day only comes along once and I wanted our parents to be involved as much as possible. Another family touch we included was hanging photos of all of our married family members at the reception. We had about 25 photos between both of our families. EVERYONE loved it! I think it also made people feel more involved in the wedding and excited to share our special day with us.

Were there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? We broke quite a few rules, but it was all worth it for the big day!

What was your biggest wedding planning success? Having it all come together for an AMAZING day! I am so happy we hired Kelly from A Savvy Event! She was AWESOME. She really allowed us to give our input and ideas, and then she took them to the next level. She captured everything we hoped our wedding day would be and gave us the fairytale wedding day we had dreamed of. The wedding went off without any errors and it was just a perfect day with family and friends!
