What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Pretty soon into the wedding planning process, Nick and I decided that we wanted a destination wedding. Our most favorite weddings to attend were ones that felt like vacations and we loved the idea that guests would be able to treat the event as a weekend getaway. Because of this, the entire focus of the wedding and the weekend was making sure our guests would have a blast. From the wedding eve get-together where our favorite band played a private show, to the fun-filled photo booth, to the upgraded reception bar package, we made sure there was great time had for all. I made welcome bags for all guests complete with snacks, a hangover kit, and a personalized city tour pamphlet to ensure everyone made the most of their time in St Augustine. For the wedding ceremony, we incorporated our guests into the celebration by organizing a ring warming. Later at the reception, we made sure to order late-night munchies, which are always a hit with guests. To cap off the weekend, we held a farewell brunch to say goodbye to our close friends and family.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? I felt like so much of my time planning was spent thinking about the reception, so its surprising to me that my most favorite memories are from the wedding ceremony. We splurged on the ceremony location and I couldnt be happier with that decision. It made for a beautiful setting and I was very moved by the magic of the moment that day. Additionally, since we had my brother officiating (who has no experience officiating), I had to write the entire ceremony myself. Because of this, I really felt connected to every passage and reading and it was priceless to have someone so close to us perform the marriage. To stay with the intimate feel of the ceremony, Nick and I even wrote our own vows. They turned out beautifully and I will always remember that moment – minutes before becoming husband and wife, sharing our love, dreams, and wishes to each other in front of our closest friends and family.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? If youre not a natural party planner and your budget allows it, get a wedding planner! I didnt, but I think thats my only regret from the whole process. My stress level was through the roof during much of the wedding process and I think the extra expense would have been completely worth it.

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? We wanted our wedding to be very personal – from the crazy cake with the hiking couple on the top of it (we love to spend time outdoors together and David has hiked the Appalachian Trail), to the Persian cookies on our dessert table (a nod to Davids family), to the kiddush cups that we used in our ceremony (from our bar/bat mitzvahs) and David’s ring (a family heirloom that was a gift from my stepfather). Everything had some special meaning for us. We wanted the wedding to feel personal for our guests as well, so we asked everyone to give us copies of their own wedding photos, even if they could not make it to the wedding. We put these in gold frames and used them scattered around the reception.

It was also really important to us that our wedding be fun and entertaining for us and our guests. We wanted to have an amazing band and lots of ways for guests to amuse themselves like the make-your-own mojito bar, lighting chanukah candles with the kids (our wedding was on the last night of chanukah) and the fireworks at the end of the night. We did not want there to be any time when people were standing around with nothing to do!

Visually, we always had the venue in the back of our minds, and we chose the colors and the gold and lace accents with the tropical views and old world feel of the architecture in mind. It was a colorful and ornate setting so we used that as our guide for the look and feel of the wedding – an all-white wedding would not have worked there!

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding?
Emma: David secretly learned to play the ukulele in the weeks leading up to our wedding and surprised me with a serenade of one of our favorite songs at the reception. He gave the music to the band in advance and all of our guests sang along with him on the chorus. It was such an amazing memory and probably the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me. It will be hard for him to top!

David: At the end of the night, we called everyone out on the patio for a final treat and then surprised them with a fireworks display that was the equivalent of what a small town in the US would put on for the 4th of July. It was one of the highlights of the evening for everyone!

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? It will all go by very quickly, so just try to stay present in every moment. We took a few minutes by ourselves after the ceremony to soak it all in, connect with each other, and get ready for the party, which we both really appreciated. Also, everyone will look to the bride and groom to set the tone for the party, so relax, get out on the dance floor and have fun and everyone else will follow!
