Cinco de Mayo Destination Wedding in Cabos San Lucas – La Chanda and Marcus

January 24, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

Bright, fun and festive – three words to perfectly describe La Chanda and Marcus’ Cinco de Mayo wedding in Cabos San Lucas! A day filled with personalized details, bold pops of teal and fuchsia, and even an adventurous Mariachi band, Jillian Mitchell captured every moment as the bride and groom danced the night away with their guests. Love it all!

The Goals: First, we wanted our wedding to reflect our personalities. We love to travel and we love to party; so it made sense to plan a destination wedding in Cabo on Cinco de Mayo – a day synonymous with revelry!

Equally important, we wanted to express the love we have for each other and for our guests. We wanted every guest to know that we were honored by their presence, so we added special touches – personalizing everything with individual guest names from the shot glasses to the wedding programs.

Finally, we wanted a private ceremony and reception at a gorgeous venue that would allow the celebration to flow seamlessly. When we first visited Sunset da Mona Lisa and stepped onto the terrace, we knew there was no other place we’d want to get married. The view is spectacular and the restaurant’s spaces were perfect for the set-up and flow we wanted to achieve.

The Design: Our theme was LOVE. LAUGH. FIESTA. and that’s exactly what we wanted our guests to do! We infused this theme and our logo into every element. Our website and printed materials set the tone with festive designs and bright colors inspired by the vibrancy of Mexico. That festive feel extended into all of our events, including a tequila tasting where everyone enjoyed laughing at me taking swipes at a custom piñata, labeled Marcus’ Bachelor iPhone.

For our ceremony, we capitalized on the natural, breathtaking beauty of Cabo. Two simple orchid arrangements were all we needed; the famous El Arco rock formation and the meeting of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean provided a stunning backdrop. Our officiant perfectly delivered a reverent, yet laughter-filled ceremony.

Guests discovered details everywhere, even in the bathroom, where they loved the vinyl decals on the mirrors encouraging them to get back to the dance floor and the personalized guest towels many of them took home as souvenirs instead of using them!

To facilitate our all-out, non-stop fiesta we had an open bar including signature shots, a cigar lounge, a crazy photo booth with custom signs, glow-in-the-dark necklaces (that turned into headbands after a few cocktails) and a ‘no-one-sat-down-for-hours’ soundtrack provided by our talented DJ.

The Look: Marcus wanted a dressy, but relaxed look so he opted for a light weight Calvin Klein suit with no tie. I wanted a pretty, classic fit-and-flare dress suitable for all night dancing. I also didn’t want to spend too much on a dress I knew I wouldn’t wear more than once. I got lucky and found the perfect dress at a sample sale at the first shop I visited. I removed the long train for a less formal, oceanside look. I used chiffon cut from the train to make removable cap sleeves, creating two wedding day looks – with sleeves for the ceremony and strapless for the party! I added a little drama to the look with sparkly “something blue” heels and a gorgeous necklace my mom found.

The Moments: More than a single moment, it was the overwhelming emotion of the whole day that stands out. The joy and love were palpable. From seeing each other for the first time that day to exchanging the vows we wrote to my dad’s overly enthusiastic reply (with his hand high in the air) when the Reverend asked who was giving me away, it was wonderfully emotional. I’ll never forget my heart beating fast as we held hands preparing to be introduced as husband and wife or the excitement of our first dance to Beyonce’s “Love on Top”.

Most memorable for our guests was a special surprise. Marcus is from Louisiana, as is my family and many of our guests. We love the city of New Orleans and wanted N.O. flavor in our celebration, like a Second Line. We couldn’t fly a whole New Orleans Brass Band to Mexico, so we got creative. Our coordinator found a local Mariachi band and we sent them the music for a classic song called “Do Whatcha Wanna.” They learned it, rehearsed it and right before dinner surprised our guests by playing it. Our guests went wild and jumped from their seats to dance. Dinner hadn’t even been served yet, but the party had started!

The Advice: If you’re planning a destination wedding, we strongly recommend a site visit. There are so many things you won’t know or discover unless you see and experience it for yourself.

Be happy with all of your vendors; don’t stop looking until you find the right match. You’re entrusting them with arguably the most special day of your life—choose wisely!

Especially take your time and find the best possible photographer. After the wedding is over, your memories and photos are all that remain. Because of our photographer Jillian Mitchell’s incredible images, we’re able to relive the moments over and over again!

Lastly, it’s your day, so as our second line song says, “Do Whatcha Wanna!” Don’t let others dictate the kind of wedding you should have. Have the wedding you want. We did and the day was perfect. And every anniversary will be a repeat Cinco de Mayo fiesta!

Winter Wedding at Fairmont Banff Springs by Gabe McClintock – Megan and Eric

January 23, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

There is something about a snowy winter wedding that is so very timeless and magical! Set at the wintery white Fairmont Banff Springs, Megan and Eric’s wedding was the picture of fairytale. After a traditional candlelit ceremony, the couple spent time in the gorgeous landscape of Banff with photographer Gabe McClintock before heading into a reception decorated with glittering metallics and glowing with the warmth of their loved ones.

The Couple: Megan and Eric

The Wedding: 11.16.13 – Fairmont Banff Springs, Banff, Alberta

The Goals: We wanted a sumptuous winter wedding. Being from Alberta, with the mountains so close, Banff was a natural choice. We wanted our wedding to exude a classic elegance, and we wanted our guests to go “wow” when they walked in.

The Moments: Eric – It’s somewhat of a cliche, but my favourite part of the day was seeing Megan for the first time in her dress. She had been so excited to wear it for almost a year and it was well worth the wait. She was stunning and took my breath away.

Another moment that stood out for me was when we entered the reception for the first time. Our guests went wild and gave us a standing ovation. It completely caught us off guard, but we managed to pause for a few moments and take it all in, which was well worth it.

Megan – I had major butterflies before the ceremony. While I was getting ready with the bridesmaids, the groomsmen showed up to our room with a delivery of champagne, and a wooden jewelry box and letter from Eric to me. Being able to read Eric’s thoughtful words and know he was thinking about me was a wonderful moment and it just helped me calm down and remember the point of the whole day.

I also really loved our first dance as husband and wife; I was completely overwhelmed with love and happiness. I couldn’t stop telling Eric, “I’m just so happy!”

The Look: Again, we wanted the fashion to be elegant and timeless. I wanted to feel beautiful but I also wanted to be able to look back in 30 years and still think we looked great. With that in mind, we tried to pick classic looks that will age well.

I knew from the beginning that an A-line dress would probably be the most flattering on me and I wanted to look romantic and beautiful; I also needed a dress that would match the venue and level of formality for the occasion. I found my dress on my first shopping trip with my mom and it was exactly what I was looking for — the tulle made it very romantic and a little fun, but it was simple enough to retain the sophisticated look I wanted as well. Since my dress was fairly simple, I was able to have some fun with my accessories. I added a pearl and crystal sash, as well as a sparkly bracelet and earrings, and an elbow length, single-layer, tulle veil to match my dress. All of my accessories came from Novelle Bridal.

As for Eric and the groomsmen, we wanted a sophisticated and somewhat traditional look and we achieved that with tuxedos from the Vera Wang Black line. We then added some individuality by having each groomsman wear different cufflinks and fun dress socks.

The Design: We were going for a classic winter wedding with a lot of sparkle, so all of our design elements incorporated metallics and warm pastel colours. We used metallics in everything from the invitation papers to the aisle runner to the table cloths, so the sparkly theme was carried throughout. We stuck to warm, romantic, and fairly neutral colours for almost everything else. We wanted the look to be elegant, beautiful, and memorable.

The Advice: Eric: Since Megan works full-time and I run my own business, we are very busy. Our wedding would never have been the success it was without our wedding planner. If you can afford it, I highly recommend you invest in some help with planning. On the day of your wedding you will be stress free since your planner and wedding party will be handling all the logistics. It’s nice to be able to enjoy your wedding and not worry about details.

Some other advice I would offer is to “move slowly”. Literally. Take your time when you walk from A to B, or give a speech. There’s no need to rush and you’ll be more relaxed and have more fun if you’re able to just slow down and enjoy yourself.

Megan – Don’t sweat the small stuff. Attention to detail is important, but there’s no point in stressing yourself out over every tiny detail. When the day comes, you won’t care about if you picked the perfect guest book or if the cake has three tiers or four; you will be too busy getting married and enjoying the day!

And I agree with Eric — try as much as possible to savor each moment because the day is over before you know it.

Worried About Rain on Your Wedding Day?

January 22, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

It has been ingrained in all engaged couples to consider rain on the wedding day the worst case scenario, but I’m here to share the story of a couple who experienced a torrential downpour at their outdoor wedding ceremony in Florida, and not only lived to tell the tale, but revel in it! Jenn and Mike were married at The Glen Venue in Florida and despite the rain (or possibly because of it!) their wedding was all about community celebrating together, and their photographer Jason Mize was able to capture the day in photos filled with beauty and magic.

What was your favorite part of the day? What moments stand out in your mind as being the most special/memorable/romantic? Our favorite parts of the wedding day were seeing each other as I (Jenn) walked down the aisle, seeing all of our family members in one place, and getting time together to take our amazing photos! The most special/memorable moments were when everyone came up and prayed for us during the ceremony and of course it was most memorable when it started to rain super hard mid ceremony!

What were you looking for in a photographer? What specifically drew you to Jason Mize and his imagery? What did you enjoy most about working with him? We were looking for someone unique and who has an amazing eye. We were drawn to Jason because of his special ability to capture the emotions and beauty of a wedding with his unique editing style and eye! Jason was the kindest photographer to work with! He flowed like nothing was wrong when it rained the entire night. He was so encouraging and positive throughout the whole thing. What a blessing he was to us!

What piece of advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding today? What was your biggest wedding planning success? (For instance, what do you do when it rains on your wedding day?) My biggest piece of advice for those planning a wedding and those who deal with rain on their big day would be to relax! Enjoy the moment! The reality is you can’t change the weather or whatever goes wrong so don’t let it ruin your day or take away the joy of marrying your best friend! I’d say if there is any chance of rain or questionable weather have umbrellas on hand and a sense of humor! My biggest wedding day success was providing an environment of love and beauty for our family and friends to enjoy with us!
