After stumbling upon Junebug member photographers Erin and Ben Chrisman’s wedding at the Hacienda Uayamon while searching for the perfect wedding venue, bride Karla knew she wanted to get married in Campeche, Mexico. Karla and her husband Josh planned an incredible destination wedding with an extraordinary candlelit ceremony set in the ruins of an ancient chapel, an unbelievably epic dance party and absolutely jaw-dropping photography from Aaron Morris of Chrisman Studios.
The Goals: For our wedding we have three top priorities. Have a wild, rockin’ dance party, a heart-melting, unique and personal ceremony and of course top shelf liquor and amazing food.
The Design: The location was exactly what I wanted for my design concept – deconstructed glamour with an old world feel. I wanted a magical forest wedding that was different from any other, especially the typical, cookie cutter, destination beach weddings. I wanted a unique wedding that reflected my personal style. Josh and I both love old architecture and vintage trinkets. I wanted a glamorous wedding set against the ruins of the Hacienda. Like leather and lace essentially. Total opposites but complimentary of each other.
The Design: There was so much to plan from so far away. We booked Hacienda Uayamon site unseen. I didn’t need to go there to know it was exactly what I wanted. I think this made it even more special for us. It was a new adventure for Josh and I to experience together for the first time and for such a huge occasion heightened the excitement.
I always dreamed about a candlelight ceremony. I wanted the lighting to be natural, soft and romantic. The candles were so warm and inviting and totally helped set the intimate mood I was going for. All of us were being cradled in that rugged chapel by love and light.
The reception tables were decorated with all different pieces that Josh and I sourced from local flea markets, tag sales and salvage yards. I wanted each table to be different but have a cohesive feel. I allowed my guests to take home the pieces for themselves. There were antique Morrocan and Indian tea sets, colored blown glass vases, a bunch of beautiful elephant statues as well as much more. My florist Ileana added stunning floral arrangements and feathers.
The Moments: One of my favorite memories of the day was the moment I reached Josh at the alter and my father handed me over to him. At that moment we naturally leaned in to kiss each other; I paused quickly and said something regarding the fact that we had to wait until the end and everyone giggled. That set the tone for the loose and intimate ceremony. Looking at him get overwhelmed with emotion while I recited my vows to him might be the best moment. He held my hand so tight. I could tell he felt so loved, as did I.
The Advice: I often see brides too stressed to enjoy their day. I had the time of my life at our wedding and will never forget it. We danced all night long. The humidity and heat made me a sweaty, disgusting mess and I did not care. It was about how happy I felt. You have to let the small stuff go and have a blast. Bottom line, it is a celebration of love.
