Quirky, Vintage, Metallic – There’s So Much to Love in This Port of Burlington Wedding

Self-proclaimed quirky couple Melissa and TJ celebrated their downtown Burlington wedding the best way they knew how: as a reflection of themselves. Vintage vibes and a metallic color palette highlighted a few of their favorite things. From saying “I do” at The Capitol Theater to dancing the night away at the Port of Burlington even their venue choices were atypical and quintessentially “them.” Amy Winningham Photography carefully captured the quiet moments as Melissa and TJ shared their first look and personal vows privately on a rooftop overlooking their city.

The most memorable moment was our first look. Initially, we didn’t want one, but we had an evening ceremony and we just couldn’t make our day flow without one. Best decision EVER! We were able to use a local rooftop in downtown Burlington, which was previously an industrial saddle factory beside the Mississippi. TJ and I are intensely private people, so while we approached this moment with trepidation at the thought of someone else (our photographer) seeing us in such an intimate moment, we also took full advantage of it by saying our personal vows to each other during this time instead of in our actual ceremony where we both knew we would just end up blubbering like idiots if we had to say more than “I do.”

My biggest concern on our wedding day was to look like myself. I mean, I wanted to look gorgeous, but I didn’t want my fiancé to look at me and be confused or feel like he didn’t recognize me. If you had told me a year before my wedding that I would be wearing a simple shift dress as my gown, I would have laughed. But in the end, I just wanted to be natural and show off my curves without being overly “sexy.” Same with my makeup. I have myriad of freckles and love them all so I didn’t even wear foundation. Looking at my photos now, I am so glad that I can recognize ME. I also knew I really wanted to wear a floral wreath from the beginning and absolutely loved the one I found on Etsy. I had extremely long hair and while I knew that could be beautiful if left down, I didn’t want to do what was typical (and also didn’t want to look like I was 12), so instead, I took my inspiration for my long locks from Elsa of Frozen and just did a fishtail braid instead!

Burlington has a wonderful, beautiful downtown beside the Mississippi and we wanted to show that off. So choosing a vintage theater that had been recently renovated and was in walking distance of our Port reception just seemed to make sense and worked perfectly into our vintage, natural vibe.

I love vintage and quirky styles, and TJ and I never have to fight to be different. I guess you could say our wedding vibe just came naturally. We took inspiration from our reception venue, the Port of Burlington beside the Mississippi — vintage and industrial.

All the centerpieces and decor were recycled thrift-store items that I had painted metallic. Why match when each table can tell it’s own story? Each wedding favor and corresponding tea/coffee cup was lovingly put together by myself and my family.

This WWII Inspired Elopement at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Took Us Back in Time

March 30, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

A vintage beauty and a real-life rock star got hitched at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse and it has us reconsidering everything we thought about weddings. Priscilla and Buddy were inspired by WWII-era elopements that took place before the soldier went off to war. This romantic and retro influence, paired with the fact that they chose to elope in the first place, created a feeling of intimacy and excitement that is vivid in every image captured by Kappen Photography. As if all of this weren’t captivating enough, we simply cannot take our eyes off of Priscilla’s citrus-infused bouquet by Jenn Sanchez Floral Design.

I was inspired by the era during WWII and how couples eloped and got married before one of them was shipped off to war, not knowing if they would return. We wanted to try to recreate that type of ceremony before we went up to the mountains and take pictures.

The most memorable part of our day was when we were signing our marriage certificate and found out we left our wallets back at the hotel the moment we had to pay for our ceremony! Our photographers (who were our witnesses too!) were so gracious enough to pay for our wedding fees and paid them when we got back to the apartment at the end of the day!

We found Buddy‘s suit first and it was this beautiful navy color. We knew he had to grab it and try it on. As soon he did, we knew it was the one! We then decided plan around the navy and the color of my cream dress (which I already had). We settled on navy, maroon, marigold, and cream.

The best thing that Buddy and I could have done was elope. I know that it is not for everyone, especially those who have close families, but the day of your wedding is going to go by so fast you won’t know what happened. Eloping is the perfect way to really pay attention to the most important thing, your partner, you, and the extremely beautiful bond that is to transpire. Your wedding is about you for once. Not anyone else. And that is okay! Your elopement is still going to whiz by you, but at least you know that the person beside you probably felt the same thing and totally agrees with the crazy idea of eloping…and actually thinks it’s pretty cool too.

Whimsical DIY Wedding at Stara Oranzeria in Poland

March 30, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

It was the hottest day of summer when Kasia and Artur tied the knot at Stara Oranżeria. The Polish greenhouse venue appealed to couple’s stylish and free-spirited vibes, and looked absolutely dreamy filled with the whimsical DIY decor of the wedding. WhiteSmoke Studio captured the effortless joy and unique details of the day, from Kasia’s custom pink embroidered dress to the newlyweds’ first cha cha on the dancefloor.

Arthur is a photographer and I’m a make-up artist, so we work every day in the world of fashion and beauty, and our wedding look was a reflection of our daily style. Artur chose white trousers, white shirt, brown suspenders, a blue jacket with white buttons, floral bow tie pattern with pink parrot and brogue shoes. I had a short pastel pink dress with floral lace designed by a young Polish designer embroidered by hand with silver Swarovski crystals. My dress shimmered in the sun! I love everything about my wedding dress; it is literally perfect and unique. I had a lovely wreath with golden leaves on my head.

The most important part of planning was dreaming up our style and picking a location. We wanted to feel natural and free on our wedding day, so we chose an old outdoor greenhouse. We had a small, romantic wedding that was fancy and full of colors.

The most memorable part of our day was the ceremony and marriage vows. Surrounded by bridesmaids and groomsmen and family, with everyone watching, it was stressful, but also beautiful and full of love and emotion.

Our day was the hottest day of summer in Poland, so we decided to surprise our guests with an Italian ice cream truck.

We wanted to combine the colors of greenhouses and garden with our vision. At the beginning, we wanted to use pastel colors but they very poorly harmonized with the natural greenery. Finally we chose white, lime, pastel and intense yellow.
