This California Wedding Inspiration Puts a Modern Twist on Irish Tradition

This California wedding inspiration from Jessie Schultz Photography provided some modern twists on Irish wedding traditions. The inland hills of Southern California are the home of Rancho Las Lomas, a secluded ranch that combines the very best of the green woods and Californian sea breezes. The ranch ended up being the perfect backdrop for both the ceremony and reception. The decorations from this styled shoot came together with the designs of Abby Lee Events and the floral arrangements from Collected with Love. Green is a very traditional Irish wedding color, so the shoot incorporated plenty of green eucalyptus plants and Bells of Ireland, while keeping things modern by adding in blue and silver hues wherever possible.

We wanted to bring out all the spring colors for this year and I thought, what better way then bringing back some old traditions to it as well. This is where the Irish theme came in and we ran with it. We started with a stunning powder blue wedding gown made by Jim Helm by Hayley Paige from Mary Me Bridal. A blue wedding gown in Ireland symbolized purity in ancient time before white became the universal symbol of virginity.

A romantic soft tradition for the bride in Ireland is for her hair to be braided for her wedding. Braided hair is an ancient symbol of feminine power and luck. So our hairdresser Jen styled the bride and her two bridesmaids to have beautiful soft braids in their hair. The bride wore more of a waterfall braid that went around her crown with the rest of her hair styled down. The two bridesmaids had their hair softly braided to the side.

During the ceremony the hands of the bride and groom were literally tied together with a soft colored thin rope to form a knot. This symbolizes the joining of husband and wife. This is the origin of the phrase “tying the knot” and why we still say that to this day.

After the bride and groom were pronounced husband and wife, we moved onto the cocktail hour. We all know how Ireland is known for their beer and whiskey so we had plenty of Guinness and Jameson for the guests. We made a “Pear Irish Mule” for our signature cocktail drink.

Walking over to the reception, we walked into a beautiful space with green everywhere. Green grass, green cactus, green trees, all different shades of green which just complimented all of our greenery on our long family styled table by Party Pieces by Perry. Collected with Love dressed the long family styled table with Eucalyptus, Bells of Ireland, Blue Thistle, white Dahlia, and white Roses. The tableware by Cherished Rentals filled the table with lots of silver and blue to add just enough pop to bring your eyes back to the green.

This unique cake was the perfect mix of tradition with a twist of modern. A traditional Irish cake would be a fruit cake made with honey and soaked in Irish whisky, then frosted with sweet white glaze. Love Cakes made the middle tier a naked cake to give that modern feel, and so you could see the delicious fruit filled inside, while the top tier and bottom tier were the traditional frosted white.

Sunset Wedding Shoot at Manly Beach in Sydney

May 27, 2016 | editorial team

Sunset-Wedding-Shoot-Manly-Beach-Sydney-14

Though Caitlin and Jim are not married, they took a stroll down Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia to pose for some incredibly sweet couple wedding portraits taken by Kiara Rose of Indwell Weddings. This styled shoot came together seamlessly – with bright flowers from Pequeño Flower Co., a couple wedding dresses from Made with Love Bridal, and a diamond ring from Colette Hayman. The bright hues of the setting sun against the sandy Austrailian beaches only added to the already beautiful love between Caitlin and Jim.

Scenic British Columbia Wedding at God’s Mountain Estate

May 27, 2016 | editorial team

Photography by Tomasz Wagner http://tomaszwagner.co

Melissa and Rob had previously stayed at God’s Mountain Estate, an upscale B&B that sits on the edge of Skaha Lake, so they knew it would be the perfect place for their British Columbia Wedding. They especially loved the estate’s European-infused style and the acres of plus green land surrounding it. They aimed to keep their wedding as much like a big family dinner in Europe as possible, with their guests seated at long tables during the family-style dinner while enjoying great food and wine. Tomasz Wagner Photo & Films captured every moment from Melissa and Rob’s elegant and timeless affair, and he captured some great portraits of the couple just as the sun began to set.

The Couple:

Melissa and Rob

The Wedding:

God’s Mountain Estate, Penticton, British Columbia

We stayed at God’s Mountain the summer previous for my other company, The Perfect Hideaway, and fell in love. It had the European feel we adore and it also has 14 bedrooms, which meant that our closest friends and family could stay there with us.

I left the dress until the month before, deciding to have something custom made from Cache Atelier, drawing inspiration from a French designer I loved. I wanted it to be simple, but it also had to be somewhat practical, as I had a 6 month old son! I wanted my overall look to be special, but I also wanted to feel like me, so I kept the makeup light and my hair simple.

Having photographed at least a hundred weddings, I was quite specific about what I wanted (and didn’t want). Luckily, Rob was in agreement with it all. Essentially, we wanted a celebration that felt like a big family dinner in Europe. We wanted a long table, family style dinner with great food and wine. We wanted it to be elegant and timeless, yet fun and casual.

We added a lot of slightly unconventional elements to our ceremony. Rob walked down the aisle with our son, Max, and handed him to my mother to hold. I had my both my father and step-father walk me down the aisle. We had a friend of ours, Mark, officiate the wedding. We also re-wrote most of the ceremony with our personal vows.

We didn’t have a particular wedding color, we just wanted everything neutral to highlight the spectacular setting. For the tabletops, we used tan/grey linens with white pillar candles and silvery green foliage with white loose blooms laid on the tabletops. The venue is so spectacular, we wanted to keep it as simple as possible.

Being a really dry summer, there were lots of fires burning, and an especially large one just south of Penticton. The morning of the wedding was clear, and it wasn’t until just after the ceremony that the winds shifted and the smoke arrived in full force. Luckily everyone got to enjoy the spectacular lake and vineyard views during the ceremony and cocktail hour, because during the dinner, it was completely socked in.
