Modern Cozy North Carolina Wedding at Yesterday Spaces

Amelia and Steve tied the knot at Yesterday Spaces, a 70-acre working family farm just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. The couple wanted their wedding to be something true to the nature of their relationship, so they designed a weekend experience that they knew their guests would enjoy. Photographers Brett & Jessica captured all the magic from Amelia and Steve’s big day, and Lucky Penny Creative helped to plan an evening that was equal parts modern, sophisticated, cozy, and straight up fun!

I told everyone that asked about my wedding fashion that I wanted to look like ‘Cate Blanchett going camping’. That was as close as we got to ‘style inspiration’. I chose a white Vionnet dress instead of a traditional wedding gown. Because it’s not a traditional wedding dress, I feel like I can wear it again.

We wanted something true to the nature of our relationship. Our backgrounds are in design and engineering (Amelia is an Experience Designer and Steve is a Software Engineer), so it was really important to us to design an experience that would be pleasant and enjoyable to our guests, while making sure every decision was an accurate reflection of who we are as a couple.

During the ceremony, we created a ‘plant ceremony’ where we planted two different plants into one pot. Similar to a ‘unity candle’ type ritual, but it was completely ours. We wrote our vows together and read them to each other. It was ours, and that made all the difference.

We wanted a beautiful outdoor space with the practicality of a backup plan and appropriate accommodations for our elderly family members. Yesterday Spaces provided these things and also guest housing for our wedding party.

The entire weekend was memorable — we provided housing for our wedding party, so it was really a dream come true to ‘live’ with all of our best friends for a few days! The day of the wedding was wonderful — and the most memorable parts came accompanied to music!

DIY Downtown Chicago Wedding at City View Loft

May 29, 2016 | editorial team

When Bridget and Dan said “I do” at City View Loft in downtown Chicago, the most important thing to them was to make sure that their loved ones felt welcomed and ready to laugh. They wanted to truly celebrate the community of friends and family they felt so blessed to have, so they included as many people as possible in the ceremony planning as well as the decorating of the loft. During the ceremony, both Bridget and Dan said there was so much positive energy, and the whole room erupted into cheers when they were pronounced husband and wife. Megan Saul Photography got in on all the fun, and she captured every sweet moment from Bridget and Dan’s big day – starting with their first look and ending with a big group dance to Beyoncé during the final song of the night.

We tried to plan the day so our loved ones felt welcomed and ready to laugh. Our dear friend officiated the ceremony, two friends performed a reading, friends sang us down the aisle, our invitations, table numbers, welcome sign and hanging menu for the reception were all made with love by friends and family.

We wrote our ceremony with our dear friend, Chris who officiated the wedding. We took inspiration from readings we loved, advice on the internet, and always trying to keep a sense of humor. Two of our friends read an excerpt from the children’s book “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard Warburg. We had a ring warming during the ceremony where we passed our rings through the rows of our guests so they can take a moment to send us some good vibes or prayers for our marriage. It was a time for us to step back and see all the people who helped get us to this place in our relationship.

From the Groom: Right before Chris announced us as married, everyone erupted into cheers and started using the noisemakers we placed on their seats. They were intended for after the kiss, but everyone just went for it. Plus, I got to marry B, that was pretty memorable.

Almost all of the decor was DIY made by myself or made by talented friends and family. My favorite piece was what held the rings during the ring warming ceremony. It was made from a cigar box, fabric scraps, and ribbon. The cigar box was my father’s who passed away unexpectedly a few months before we were engaged.

The ceremony was filled with so much energy. I’ve never experienced all that love in one room before. Everyone was so happy! Also, during the last dance we ending up being engulfed in a big group hug by everyone on the dance floor while we sang along to Beyonce. It was perfect!

Woodland Wonderland Wedding at Fort Boggy State Park

2014-10-18_Wedding_Young&Kathy

Jennifer and Alex had a hard time finding just the right forested circle venue that they envisioned, but Fort Boggy State Park ended up being everything they were looking for. Having the reception at their family property afterwards also gave guests enough space to pitch a tent and stay to celebrate for as long as they wanted. Transforming the completely untamed, wild nature into their dream wedding venue took a lot of hard work, but it was a bonding experience and a true labor of love. Max & Sam Photography captured every moment from this intimate, woodland celebration, and the DIY decorations and flowers at the reception really made it look like a forest wonderland!

We looked around at many venues, but none of them had the forested circle that I have had in my imagination for so long. They also had such strict time limits, and I wanted a camping-style wedding where everyone stayed and celebrated as long as their heart desired.

We then thought of the wild idea of my family’s property. It was completely untamed, and nobody saw how or believed it would work at first. We were determined it was the best place to have the wedding exactly how we wanted. It ended up being a great bonding experience to be out in nature together doing hard physical work, and it was so rewarding to see it finished in the end.

I used to be a florist who day-dreamed about her own future bouquet, so I decided to arrange my bouquet and floral crown. One of my good friends who is a florist worked on the other flowers and helped me set up. It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it in the end to have my dream come true without breaking my budget.

Nearly the entire wedding was DIY. We designed and printed the invitations on flower seed paper. We hunted for and bought our mismatched china and decor. We used some of my painted mismatched chairs and also bought more to paint. I sculpted our cake toppers. I had my hand on every detail so that we could keep the budget as low as possible.

The reading of the vows and our first dance were the most memorable moments to us. They were both moments filled with tears of happiness and complete and total unconditional love. Another thing about our wedding that was unique was that after most of the guests had gone home and only the campers remained we had an amazing last dance, talked late into the night, and fell asleep under tables. We woke up under the clear tent to all the trees and birds and it was just beautiful.
