Grab your bags, because this romantic destination elopement will have you wanting to board the next flight to Portugal! When San Francisco natives Andrea and Zach decided to say “I do,” they settled on a private elopement. The couple chose a gorgeous eco-focused boutique hotel on Portugal’s Lisbon Coast, Areias do Seixo, for their venue and honeymoon destination. Though their families stayed home during the wedding, Andrea and Zach included them in their festivities by reading messages and letters from their loved ones during dinner. Pedro Vilela Photography and Happy Together Films captured the couple’s day with vibrance and tons of romance!

While it was difficult to tell friends and family that they would not be part of our actual wedding day, we both believed that sharing our wedding vows was an intensely personal moment, and we wanted to celebrate what we viewed as a uniquely personal occasion privately.

After deciding that we wanted a wedding that consisted of just the two of us, the first and most important step was deciding where that moment would occur. We started thinking about locations all over the world, but quickly honed in on Europe based on previous trips and experiences we had shared there. We had never been to Portugal before, but when we stumbled across the website for Areias do Seixo we knew we had found the perfect location. It was stunningly beautiful, and emphasized a natural simplicity that matched our own personal tastes. It was the perfect location for us, and once we discovered it we built the rest of our wedding around that destination.

The entire day was perfect, so it’s difficult to single out a specific part of the wedding. We will both remember every moment of that day, and each of those vignettes was special in its own way. Our sharing of vows was the most emotional part of the day, though, so we’ll call that the most memorable. Our officiant, João, had interviewed each of us separately, and the script he used was incredibly personal and captured the essence of our personalities. We had written our own vows that he walked us through, and we had music from the talented guitarists of Royal Bermuda and the stunning coast of Portugal as our backdrop. It was a perfect day.

We designed our own wedding rings, and used rose gold for the bride’s band and gray gold for the groom’s band. We decided to bring those same colors into our wedding, so the bride’s dress was a muted rose color and the groom’s suit was a warm gray. We each wore small accessories of the other’s main color, so the bride had a gray gold bracelet and the groom’s tie mixed hues of rose gold with darker grays.

Lots of people will tell you what your wedding should look like – coworkers, friends, family, even strangers – so there is social pressure that can change your wedding from being for you to being for others. Choosing to elope may not be for everyone, but for us it focused the wedding on the two of us. It’s easier said than done, but do what’s right for you and try to block out the noise. This is the day to celebrate your union, and it should be joyous, not stressful.

Since it was an elopement, our loved ones were not with us in person for our wedding day. We still wanted to include them in our celebration, so in lieu of a reception toast we asked each of them to email our wedding coordinator with their well-wishes or stories they wanted to share. Those comments were printed out onto small scrolls and presented in a box during our reception, so we had the chance to read our families’ love letters aloud to each other.

We had an absolutely fantastic photographer (Pedro Vilela) and videographer team (Raquel & Zacarias from Happy Together). The three of them captured the magic of that day beautifully, and we could not have been more thrilled with their demeanor and support. We worked closely with them leading up to the wedding, and met them personally in Lisbon to talk through our plans. All three are wonderful people and we felt a strong kinship to them immediately. The extra time they spent with us before the wedding made it feel like our friends were there to help capture each moment. They brought creativity and joy to the day, and we feel truly blessed that they were part of our wedding.

Dazzling Queens Wedding at The Metropolitan Building

July 8, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

dazzling-queens-wedding-at-the-metropolitan-building-15

The Metropolitan Building in Queens is one of our favorite trending venues as of late, and Laura and Andy’s glamorous black tie wedding certainly does it justice! The wedding guests were treated to absolutely gorgeous florals, a very personalized ceremony, and Momofuku Milk Bar cookies as favors. In return, the guests brought the party – some even dancing so hard they ended up on the floor! Between super playful wedding party photos and romantic shots among vintage furniture, photographer Elvira Kalviste captured every moment of Laura and Andy’s day perfectly.

The Couple:

Laura and Andy

The Wedding:

The Metropolitan Building, New York City, New York

Our main focus was creating a day that was wholly meaningful, intimate, but most importantly, FUN. We really wanted our family and friends to just enjoy themselves during the celebration of our marriage.

Despite the fact that the entire day was a complete blurry whirlwind(!), the most memorable part was during the ceremony, when we stood before a room full of the most important people in our lives, and we both laughed and teared up as our ceremony unfolded.

dazzling-queens-wedding-at-the-metropolitan-building-26

We actually created our own, non-religious ceremony, though we were daunted by the task, at first! However, we had an excellent friend agree to be our officiant, and with all of our collaboration, in addition to suggestions from the internet, we crafted a ceremony that was truly special and completely “us.” Our theme was universal love, taking into account all of the current social and political events these days in addition to the love felt in the entire room at the wedding, not just ours.

dazzling-queens-wedding-at-the-metropolitan-building-28

Our first reading was for fun, a passage from The Princess Bride. Our second reading went straight to our theme, a passage from Justice Kennedy’s opinion in the Supreme Court case, Obergefell v. Hodges. Then, since our bridal party was so special and we wanted them incorporated more than just standing with us, we asked them each to read a quote, song lyric, etc. that they chose which spoke to marriage wisdom and/or advice. That was a truly fun/moving/unique part, and perhaps everyone’s favorite part of the ceremony. Before our vows and the lighting of the unity candle, our officiant also read excerpts from letters we wrote to each other; very intimate and special.

Calling All Creative Couples: This Artistic and Stylish Woodhall Manor Wedding is for You

July 7, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

calling-all-creative-couples-this-artistic-and-stylish-woodhall-manor-wedding-is-for-you-26

Three custom dresses, two dapper suits, and tons of amazing dance moves make this creative wedding a true stand-out! While planning their wedding, Deborah and Steve decided to keep a low budget and high fashion by booking their Woodhall Manor venue only three months out from the wedding date. Between the DIY table centerpieces, a custom Donna Karan-inspired bridal gown and bridesmaid dresses, and a fashion catwalk made of flowers, it’s hard for us to believe the couple only had three months to plan such an extravagant event! Matt Penberthy Photography captured every gorgeous detail of this incredible trendsetting wedding.

The Couple:

Deborah and Steve

The Wedding:

Woodhall Manor, Suffolk, England

We didn’t want to spend so much that we would be paying it off for years to come. But we also wanted something that was beautiful and reflected both of our styles. The best way we thought to do this was to go for a beautiful venue at a date they had available (as opposed to picking a date and sticking with it) and booking close to the wedding time. We booked a venue 3 months out. Also, we did a lot of the decorations ourselves.

Deborah really wanted a Donna Karan dress, but that cost more than the venue even. What Deborah did instead was to have one of her friend’s moms (who is a seamstress) make the dress for her, with just a few modifications in color. Deborah’s look was inspired by a Donna Karan dress because of its ethereal look and its use of color. She didn’t want a traditional white dress that is standard, but something that people would look at and go “yup, that’s Debb.”

For Deborah, the most memorable moment was having her mom walk her down the aisle and being surrounded by loved ones. For Steve, seeing Deborah walk down the aisle was more memorable than he thought. The fashion catwalk was an enjoyable experience for all as it was something unique at a wedding.

calling-all-creative-couples-this-artistic-and-stylish-woodhall-manor-wedding-is-for-you-9

We are artistic people and we wanted that reflected in our theme. We wanted everyone to come away from the wedding knowing they had had the best time ever. Not the sort of wedding where people stand around waiting while pictures are taken, waiting while dinner is getting ready. We had something happening at all times. Drama, poetry, catwalks, dances, etc.
