Vizcaya Museum and Garden Real Wedding – Derek and Maria

July 27, 2012 | editorial team

We adore Maria and Derek’s gorgeous wedding at the incredible Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and the absolutely stunning images from Maloman Studios. Maria’s elegant and classic style, the sophisticated color palette, and that amazing setting all made for gorgeous photos of their romantic wedding day.

The Goals: Both Derek and Maria said that their main priority was to have their family and friends in attendance to celebrate and enjoy their wedding. Beyond that, they wanted something elegant, romantic, and unique at the most beautiful location, so they chose Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. They used a liberal officiant willing to combine their Baptist and Catholic beliefs into a ceremony perfectly tailored to them.

The Design: Maria said – Our wedding was breathtaking…memorable…warm! We wanted to have an elegant and classic event. We did not have a specific theme for the wedding or reception, but our best decision was to have only our siblings as the only members of our bridal party. The wedding day and days leading up tend to be very stressful so only having family around made things easier and more intimate. Later at the reception, we had a short ballet show with a dancer that also played an electric violin. This show consisted of about 10 dances that entertained our guests using a somewhat alternative interpretation of classical music. During the last hour of the wedding we had the “hora loca”. This time consisted of our guests finding and wearing a variety of hats, masks, headpieces, and props enhanced by the participation of multiple costumed dancers to a variety of Spanish music. Our goal was to have the party end with a BANG!

The Look: I wanted something elegant and timeless. I didn’t want to wear something I would cringe about when looking back. I loved the detail of the stoned headband and my AMAZING bouquet. I was so happy to be able to wear my mother’s earrings that I have always said I would wear to my wedding, that she received as a gift from my dad about 10 years ago.

The Moments: The ceremony stands out to both of us the most. We could not believe how beautiful our ceremony site was, with all of our guests there, sitting in complete silence taking in the moment even before the ceremony began. Our toasts were also very memorable as our siblings and parents were able to share with the guests what we believed to be the best qualities we each hoped to bring to our marriage, currently and in the future.

Our first look was one of the most sentimental moments of the entire event. Our parents traveled to Vizcaya from the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove as we wanted them to be able to watch our first look. During our first opportunity to see each other, Maloman Studios was able to capture our parents watching us from above. It was incredibly emotional and exciting to see each other all dressed up and preparing to take this important next step in our relationship in the presence of the most important people in our lives.

The Pros: For all the details on the talented team of professionals that brought Maria and Derek’s vision to life, please visit the couple’s page in our Real Wedding Library.

Innovative Save-The-Date and Wedding Videos

July 26, 2012 | editorial team

I’ve had two wildly different but equally wonderful save-the-date and wedding videos come across my desk recently, and I just HAD to share them both. And while they are completely different in style and scale, they both feature true love as the main character, two lives joining together as the main plot, and all kinds of excitement along the way!

The first, a save the date video, is a true labor of love and features one couple’s amazingly complimentary skills. Soon-to-be-bride Brandy said, “My fiance Tim is a graphic designer and I am in communications. We met five years ago on the job in these respective roles, so we’ve always had a great creative partnership and really wanted to reflect this in our wedding. We have quite a few design elements up our sleeves for our wedding day, but to date Tim has created our Save the Dates, which included a custom stamp with hand-drawn graphic portraits of the two of us, and built our wedding website from the ground up; which has a liquid design so it is properly displayed on mobile devices and tablets alike! The “piece de resistance” however is the Save The Date Video! I came up with the script, we story boarded together, and he executed. We are beyond proud of the final product!”

The second video is from an un-believable(!) wedding in Las Vegas, that Junebug member Eddie Zaratsian and his team from Tic-Tock Couture Florals collaborated on with Fancy That! Events. Visual Masterpiece produced this amazing film that captured the emotion, music, dancing, and entertainment of the day. ONLY in Vegas! But seriously, the music and cinematography brilliantly narrates the story without any words at all.

Good stuff, huh? Thanks so much Brandy and Tim, and Visual Masterpiece!

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding? I wanted amazing food, beautiful flowers and decor, and a lot of little details.

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? We lit a unity candle which I thought was a lovely way to symbolize our families joining. I also wore my grandmother’s engagement and wedding rings. She recently passed away and I wanted to honor her on my wedding day, and the absolutely incredible relationship she and my grandfather had.

Where there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? Why and how did you do that? We didn’t have a wedding cake. My husband doesn’t like sweets and i am allergic to gluten, so we decided it would be more fun to serve everyone three little desserts instead. We had orange infused creme brulee, molten chocolate cake with raspberry coulis, and key lime tarts all on one plate. Everyone loved it!

What was your biggest wedding planning success? All our guests said they had a great time and loved all the little details I incorporated into our wedding. We had custom made canvas welcome bags for all our out of town guests, watermelon lemonade served in glass jars with grey and white striped straws served by when guests arrived at the reception and baskets filled with grey flip flops (dancing shoes) in the lounge area. We had a late night snack of french fries and milkshakes passed to guests on the dance floor and lounge area, and we had the valets put midnight snack bags in each car (which contained two Voss water bottles and Pennsylvania Dutch hard pretzels) with a tag that read a midnight snack from the groom’s home state so they would have a surprise when they were leaving the wedding.

What was the most important thing that you learned through the wedding planning process and what would you tell other brides-to-be? That something will probably go wrong or not turn out the way that you planned, but don’t worry about the small things. At the end of the day all that matters is the commitment you are making to the love of your life, and as long as the two of you are there, everything else is just icing on the cake.
