What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Our wedding style was inspired by our relationship, personalities and interests, along with the venue itself. The wedding was held at my farm, which really catered to interesting and fun decor. More importantly, it holds a lot of importance in our hearts and its where we always dreamt of getting married. We incorporated our personalities into our big day in pretty much every aspect of the wedding. Our dog, Luna, walked our rings down the aisle and the bridal party was made up of 22 people who meant the most to us. Also, I changed into Toms, and Anthony changed into converse after the ceremony! We wanted the wedding to have a laid-back, rustic feel to it.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Its hard to narrow it down and pick just a few! Our wedding felt like a fairytale to us. After a four and a half year engagement, walking down the aisle to meet the love of my life at the end felt so surreal and wonderful. Its a moment Ill always remember vividly. We waited a long time for that day and I can honestly say that it was just perfect. Also, I think one of our favorite moments had to have been our first dance. We danced to, In My Life by the Beatles and felt like we were the only ones in the tent. It was a really special moment and well remember it forever.

Choosing to go with our big bridal party was a great choice. We were hesitant at first because we had so many people we wanted up there with us, but were worried what guests might think about the huge bridal party. We finally decided that it was our big day and if we wanted to include all of our friends, we should! Looking back, we wouldnt have changed a thing. It felt great to have all our friends and family up there with us and we like that it was unique and different. Plus, we never once heard that we had too many people up there!

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Dont spend so much time stressing about planning that you forget to enjoy the planning process! It can be really stressful trying to plan everything to make sure it all turns out perfectly. But, take time to enjoy it all and have fun with it. Dont be afraid to incorporate quirky details that may seem to be non-traditional. Dont be worried about what guests will think or say. Everyone going is there to support you and will walk away thinking everything was perfect. Enjoy the wedding itself! It flies by! Taste the food, take time to sit down for cake, have a drink, and dance! Your wedding day only comes around once in your life – make it special!

Favorite Posts from 2012 – English Garden Inspired Wedding Flowers

December 26, 2012 | editorial team

Editor’s Note: As part of our July “London Week” to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics, our brilliant Editor Alexa (also a professional florist herself) put together this beautiful post all about English garden flowers. It’s so fun to see how these English wedding florists work their magic with the soft, natural colors and textures of their local bounty, and to learn from a floral expert like Lex.

Mention England to any gardener, and they will immediately go weak in the knees. The English climate produces over-the-top roses and luxurious greenery in the softest color palettes. Remember the beautiful blooms from the Royal Wedding? All grown right at home in England.

English garden inspired wedding arrangements have flowers that are arranged loosely, creating a natural, romantic look. Small, textural varieties of blossoms like veronica, sweet peas, and nigella (also whimsically known as “Love In A Mist”) can be included along with the big, blowsy peonies and roses that are trademarks of English gardens. Fresh spring bulbs like grape hyacinth, narcissus, and lily-of-the-valley are often featured, and eucalyptus and waxflower are consistently used for their soft and fragrant greenery. The colors? Soft, antique, and almost like a watercolor painting. All of the gorgeous, lush wedding flowers we’re featuring today were designed by English florists, inspired by the surrounding gardens.

Favorite Posts from 2012 – Old-California Spanish Style Wedding in San Luis Obispo – Hylah and Justin

December 26, 2012 | editorial team

Editor’s Note: Hylah and Justin’s soft, pretty, Spanish influenced wedding simply couldn’t be any lovelier. I knew it would be a favorite of mine the very first time I laid eyes on these images from photographer Michelle Warren and the decor details created by event planner Jennifer Hocker. We originally published it back in March of this year, and it still has a hold on me today – I hope you love it too!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding? Intimate, Sensuous, Old California

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? The location of our wedding single-handedly inspired the creative direction for the day. Justin grew up on a spectacular piece of property in San Luis Obispo, La Familia Ranch, which is still owned by his family and had become a special place for us as a couple. The Hacienda is the central structure, a Spanish-Colonial home that includes a lush, serene courtyard, and we never even considered an alternative back-drop for the ceremony. My design intention was to echo the intrinsic aesthetic of the place in order to further evoke a feeling of Old California romance and charm. Some of my favorite textures there included blue agave, wrought iron chandeliers, hand-painted Mexican tiles, giant date palms, the patinaed terracotta fountain, and the arched, redwood front door studded with decorative Mexican nails.

Our invitations, attire, flowers, music, and menu were all extensions of the theme. I took calligraphy lessons and learned the mission-style script thats omnipresent on the central coast and addressed each invitation in terracotta watercolor. I wore my ivory, lace-trimmed veil up high, like a mantilla, and our ring bearer and flower girl were adorable in embroidered cotton. Our florist did an amazing job and let the arrangements sprawl and drape, keeping the style more relaxed than formal. A guitarist performed Flamenco pieces during the ceremony and cocktail hour, and a jazz band kicked off the reception energy with sexy Latin rhythms. Lastly, our chef, a fellow locavore, was delighted to incorporate into the menu as much produce from the ranch as possible, including avocados, lemons, and chick peas.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Im glad that we kept the guest count under 100. As we dined family-style at long tables, I could see the face of each guest in candlelight, laughing at a joke from one of the toasts, or commenting on the wine. That was important to me, and several of our friends expressed appreciation for having been included in such an intimate-feeling celebration. Im also grateful that Justin hired a videographer. I wasnt crazy about the idea at first, but really appreciate having the footage now!
