Passionate Iceland Destination Wedding at Budir Church

This Iceland destination wedding brought tears to our eyes – getting to watch two people begin their happily ever after is one of the best feelings in the world! Maddie and Joe met through a mutual friend on Instagram, and they fell in love six weeks before they ever met in real life. Both being photographers, they knew that the pictures and video of their wedding would be the most invaluable physical takeaways from the day. Luckily, they have a talented set of friends – Micah Hamilton of Micah Visuals created a beautiful video tribute and Gregory Woodman captured some breathtaking photos of the couple in front of Budir Church, the tiny black wooden church where they wed. With views of the magical Snaefellsjokull glacier in the background, Maddie and Joe vowed to love each other passionately all the days of their lives.

We tried to plan a big wedding in Nashville and it just got overwhelming knowing that we had to book our venue a year or two in advance. So we decided to go smaller and Iceland has always been on our minds. We’d seen photos of the Budir Chapel and knew we had to find it.

I had always wanted a wedding dress with a low back and the second I found that Katie May dress, I knew. I added on lace straps and went with a champagne color because of my pale skin. I got a necklace from Anthropologie that looked like a crystal/rock, which I am still obsessed with and it went perfectly with our surroundings in Iceland. My maid of honor wore a floor-length simple black dress.

The most memorable part of the day was our first look. We don’t think that we will ever feel the emotion that we felt at that moment. We were able to have that precious alone time to calm our nerves and share our personal vows before the ceremony.

We wanted a very intimate ceremony with close friends and family. We definitely did not go the traditional route. There were maybe 10-15 people at our wedding – and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. We truly got to share that moment with the ones we love most. Our good friend officiated and was able to share our story on how we met through Instagram.

I think there are always going to be surprises on wedding days. Good or bad. Like we were all running a little late and decided to cancel our reservations for dinner back in Reykjavik and just run into the hotel that was right next to our chapel. Wedding dress and all. We all crammed into this booth, had drinks, told stories, and ate sandwiches. It was perfect.

It was wonderful working with our photographer on the day of. We are both photographers, so photos and video were one of the most important things to us. We were so lucky to have our good friends capture those moments for us.

Dreamy Scottish Tipi Wedding at Greenbank Garden

March 20, 2016 | editorial team

Dreamy-Scottish-Tipi-Wedding-Greenbank-Garden-15

Having been to Greenbank Garden before, Jenn and Simon knew that the walled garden would perfectly suit the tipis they were envisioning for their big day. They both knew they wanted a day that was a little bit different, and weather permitting, they wanted to get married outdoors. If you’ve ever been to Scotland, you’ll know that it rains a majority of the time. But as luck would have it, on the day of Jenn and Simon’s wedding, the sun shined bright all day, and Solen Photography was able to capture fantastic shots of the couple and their guests as they enjoyed the “Secret Garden” themed day.

The Couple:

Jenn and Simon

The Wedding:

Greenbank Garden, Glasgow, Scotland

Because the Garden was such a big part of the day, we had a bit of a ‘Secret Garden’ theme and chose to make the invitation in the style of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel ‘The Secret Garden’, which I loved when I was little.

We both agree that our ceremony, from start to finish, was the most memorable part. Simon says his favourite part of the whole day was seeing me walk into garden and coming down the aisle.

We were very keen to have something a little bit different, and despite living in Scotland, optimistically decided we were getting married outdoors. When we first saw pictures of tipis, we knew that they were exactly what we were looking for: something really unique and special.

One of the key ways we personalized our ceremony was to have two of the people who know us best, my bridesmaid and Simon’s usher tell the story of how we met and our relationship together – a part usually spoken by the celebrant. We hadn’t heard their speech until that very moment in the ceremony, but fully trusted them to do a wonderful job!

The photographs amongst the tall grass are a few of our absolute favourites of the whole day, and such a lovely memory.

We made our wedding favours (flavoured vodka in little old fashioned bottles), all the signage, the decorative jars for table centers, and the table center numbers. Our dads had home grew all the flowers we used to fill the jars and our mums and bridesmaids made excellent impromptu florists the day before, arranging them all so beautifully.

Modern Classic Ottawa Wedding at The Horticulture Building

March 19, 2016 | editorial team

Modern-Classic-Ottawa-Wedding-Horticulture-Building-9

The recently renovated Horticulture Building in downtown Ottawa ended up being the perfect venue for Anna and Brook’s classic wedding. The couple chose a fall color palette incorporating berry colors with soft peaches and blush tones, and their wedding planners transformed the historic building into three perfect rooms for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner and dancing afterward. Anna and Brook wanted their wedding day to be intimate and fun, and based on the pictures Joel & Justyna took throughout the day, we think they pulled that off flawlessly!

I wanted a look that was classic, minimalist and romantic. I wanted to make sure that in 20 years when I look back at my photos that my dress doesn’t look dated. I loved my Jennifer Behr gold comb, but most of all I loved my Valentino Rockstud shoes!

The ceremony was incredible, it was very intimate and personal. The officiant was a family friend who had personalized the ceremony. Brook’s close friends played the music. We had our family read poems, including one entitled “What I Learned About Love, I Learned From My Dog” in honour of our dog Maya, and to honour my Polish roots, my aunt read a poem about love in Polish. Brook and I also wrote our own vows.

The Horticulture Building is an old historical building that was recently updated. Brook and I loved the industrial feel of the venue with its big windows, concrete floors, and exposed brick. It was a huge empty space that we divided in three for the ceremony, the cocktail hour and dinner. It was absolutely perfect.
