Enchanting New Orleans Wedding at Besthoff Sculpture Garden

Wanting their wedding to capture the feeling of spring and new life, Cat and Brock said “I do” in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The wedding flowers were all white with green foliage, and they complimented the natural beauty of the sculpture garden. Being in New Orleans, Cat and Brock decided to organize a second line, where they paraded in the street behind a brass band and danced to the music. After that, they and their guests moved into the museum to enjoy the reception, and the historic venue gave their big day a classy and timeless vibe.

The Couple:

Cat and Brock

The Wedding:

We made gift boxes for our out of town guests and left them at their hotels. We included a brochure-style timeline for the weekend, Virginia peanuts (an homage to Brock’s upbringing – his father used to farm peanuts in Smithfield, VA), a tiny king cake (Mardi Gras tradition), Zapps potato chips (a local favorite), Mardi Gras beads, bottled water and Abita root beer (brewed in Louisiana), and Tabasco jelly beans!

My friend and makeup artist, Sara Kuhl, flew from Los Angeles to do my makeup for our wedding day. This put me totally at ease, and we even did a trial run before the wedding so Sara could be sure of the style I was looking for.

Photography is very important to us – it’s the one takeaway you’ll always have to treasure and share after the wedding. Our photographer Dorka was actually like a mini wedding planner for us. She worked with us to create a realistic timeline for our wedding day that helped cement our plans. Also, she staked out a private wooded area in City Park near our venue where we took some of our most memorable photos, just the three of us away from the crowd of guests.

All of the bridesmaids wore a different color/style dress. We set out very basic guidelines, and the girls sent photos of their dresses as they shopped and emailed about their color choices. It was important to me that everyone could pick something that fit them well and made them feel gorgeous, and maybe they’d actually want to wear it again.

My dad helped arrange a unique wedding gift: our favorite band – HoneyHoney of Los Angeles came to play our wedding ceremony. They are an awesome folk-rock duo who usually tour and don’t normally play weddings, so it was a very special treat.

Cat works as a chef in Los Angeles, so we had our florist put together themed arrangements for each table based on a food/vegetable. We had a cauliflower table, an artichoke table, a Rosemary table, and so on. They looked beautiful and were totally personal to us. The guests had a lot of fun with it and took home seed packets of their vegetable as favors.

Location was very important to us. We chose New Orleans as our wedding location. Cat used to live there, and it was the best place to host a party with family members who live all across the states. We wanted out of town guests to have a vacation as well as visit for our wedding, and New Orleans was perfect.

Hiring a local wedding planner (Kenny LaCour of Grand Events) was the most essential thing we did to help make our wedding a success. His relationship with local venues, rental companies, DJs, transportation and so much more was absolutely invaluable when working out our wedding plans.

We planned a second line (a local New Orleans tradition of parading behind a brass band and dancing to music in the street). Everyone said this was one of there favorite memories of our wedding. One of my bridesmaids hand-decorated umbrellas for us to carry during the second line parade. I remember our photographer Dorka running with us in the streets to capture everything, both of us laughing and shouting over the music. We had so much fun!

Modern Vintage Ontario Wedding at The Mill House

For Cydney and Topher, the most important part of their Ontario wedding was the ceremony itself, because while celebrating with your guests at the reception is important and fun, the marriage begins at “I do”. They see the commitment of marriage in a special light because their parents have been married a combined 79 years. They shared their vows in front of their family and friends at The Old White Chapel, and then moved the party over to The Mill House for the reception. Chelsey of With Love & Wild Photography was there to capture all the love and happiness from Cydney and Topher’s big day, from the first look to the DIY light-up LOVE sign decorating the reception.

Chelsey’s photos are stunning and she makes you feel incredibly comfortable in front of the camera. She’s totally brilliant and I’m sure will be a top photographer in the not so distant future. We feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to have her as our photographer.

We chose to give our guests gifts at our ceremony, instead of our reception. We offered blankets to everyone upon arriving since our Chapel wasn’t heated and we anticipated it would be a brisk day in mid-October. We also gave welcome gifts to all of our guests as they arrived at their hotel. These welcome bags included maps of the area, some basic toiletries guests may need over the weekend, a hangover kit and a few snacks and treats, including some of my homemade shortbread cookies.

While we loved our reception, our ceremony is what we really poured our hearts into. For readings at the ceremony we had both our Moms read a reading from their weddings. Our parents have been married a combined 79 years and are a big source of inspiration for us, so it was important to us to acknowledge their marriages and where they began as we started our married life together.

We really wanted a light-up LOVE sign, but they were SO expensive. My dad was able to make one by carving the letters out of plywood, and then we just inserted string lights from the back. It looked amazing and cost way less than buying.

We had hand-written thank you cards that we wrote to each guest which served as name placement cards at our reception. It ensured that we had an opportunity to personally thank everyone and acknowledge the role they play in our lives, even if we couldn’t see them that day. It took some work, but friends and family seemed to appreciate it.

Whimsical Baby Blue and Fuchsia Wedding at The Cooper Estate

April 10, 2016 | editorial team

Angela Winsor Photography

Abby Jo and Kayleb wanted to get married outside in December, and their wedding team worked day and night to make that dream come to life, starting with the venue. With its rustic barn, stone bridal cottage, and lush green outdoor ceremony location, The Cooper Estate quickly became the perfect place for the couple to say “I do”. Abby Jo surprised Kayleb with a small cake decorated with The University of Tennessee colors, and the duo personalized their wedding by treating their guests to a pie bar. Angela Winsor Photography followed the couple throughout the day, capturing each sweet kiss and every bit of the fun their guests had celebrating their love with them.

My wedding party wore different styled dusty blue maxi dresses by Amsale with greenery crowns in their hair. My bridesmaids were all basically models who stole the show with how beautiful they looked!

Walking down the aisle to see my groom for the first time. We did not do a first look, and chose to share that moment with all of our guests. I was so excited and nervous to walk down the aisle, and the second I saw my husbands face everything else went blank and my heart exploded! Something I will never forget!

After we kissed for the first time as husband and wife, we danced down the aisle to “All I want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. It was the best time because we just got married and were reminded that Christmas was also in two weeks!

My dress was my dream! I wanted the rustic/vintage look that went along with our venue and wedding theme. I loved the sleeves and that long train with the big bow. My headpiece was a favorite as well! Twigs and Honey makes gorgeous headpieces of all different kinds that were more affordable than other places I looked.

We love pie. So instead of serving cake, we had an adorable pie bar. Also, my husband loves The University of Tennessee, so I surprised him with a small UT polka dot cake for us to cut into and wore a matching UT garter. The little details are what make your wedding extra special to you.

We chose our venue because it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It felt like we were in another world. The rustic barn, the stone bridal cottage, and the lush green ceremony spot captured our hearts the second we walked on property. Not to mention the food was some of the best food we’ve ever had!
