Having just moved a couple months before getting engaged, Shannon and Clinton tried to bring as much New Orleans up to to Seattle as they could for their wedding day. They loved the natural beauty and chill cabin vibe that Kiana Lodge provided, and with stunning lakeside views, the lodge was a perfect place for them to say “I do.” Maris Events went above and beyond to understand their wedding vision, even helping to organize a second line complete with handkerchiefs and umbrellas to transition from the dinner to the reception area. Photographer Benj Haish got in on all the fun and captured every happy moment from Shannon and Clinton’s New Orleans inspired celebration!

Clinton surprised me with our two little dogs in tuxes. To see my three handsome guys waiting there for me after all the build up of the day, the dress, the makeup, the schedules, the EVERYTHING….it brought me right back down to Earth. I never wanted a first look, I was actually against it as long as I can remember, and it ended up being one of my favorite moments.

The back of my wedding dress is why I wore it. Period. Still obsessed. The bridesmaids wore a cream white, my dress was cream and gold and the guys were in classic tuxes. It looked awesome. Wanted to add a touch of metal to the earthiness, so there were gold accents everywhere.

Since I was a little girl, my dad has taught me to love bagpipes. It was always my dream to walk down the aisle with my dad to bagpipes. My mom had both of her parents walk her down the aisle, which was always special to her…so we had the pastor surprise my mom and she joined us at the front so they could both give me away as well.

We wanted New Orleans meets the Pacific Northwest. Not something that is done very often, I imagine. We found a 9-piece soul brass band (nearly impossible), they learned a Second Line song “Do Whatcha Wanna” for us and we transitioned from dinner to reception area with a second line procession complete with umbrellas and handkerchiefs.

I made all of our sequin/feather headbands for the reception. My parents caught a bunch of beads at Mardi Gras in New Orleans and shipped them to Seattle. Halfway through the reception, headbands, Mardi Gras beads and top hats were passed out to turn the dance party up a notch. No messing around with purchased beads. These came of the streets of the French Quarter, people!

Historical Garden Wedding at the Maitland Art Center

April 30, 2016 | editorial team

Meilynn and Peter decided to get married at the Maitland Art Center because it was the same place they had their very first date, as well as the same place Peter asked Meilynn to marry him. The couple didn’t want a grand or traditional wedding — they envisioned a small wedding in a magical setting that felt like a backyard celebration. They wanted their guests to feel as involved as possible, and from the pictures that Jessica Perez Photography took, it certainly looks like they pulled it off!

The Couple:

Meilynn and Peter

The Wedding:

Maitland Art Center, Maitland, Florida

But if I had to pick a favorite moment, it was the way Peter looked at me for the first time as he turned around for our first look photography session! Priceless and unforgettable!

This was simplest task! We knew we wanted to have the wedding at Maitland Art and History Museum because that was the place he took me on our first official date, also that is where he proposed! We now joke that we will have our kids there next.

I wanted the ladies to wear long flowy dresses of their choice in the color blush, blending in with nature was our goal! Except for my sister who was my maid of honor, she wore a rose gold sequin dress! I wore a dress I designed myself, I took various designer dress designs and pieced them together to make an original, I then handed the task to a trustworthy seamstress, the same lady who made my mother’s wedding dress!

Coldplay is our favorite band! They in some way have been part of the important parts of our relationship. We knew quite early we wanted them to be played as our processional and recessional. I walked in to “O” by Coldplay. The first time I heard the song it just tore my heart apart and I knew I would walk down the isle to this song!! It’s not necessarily a romantic song, actually quite the contrary, however, what it meant for Peter and I was pure expression of love.

We didn’t want a grand wedding, that just isn’t us. We wanted a small backyard-feel wedding in a magical looking place! It was easily themed a garden wedding because it took place in a garden. We knew we wanted simplicity with a slight touch of magic but we definitely wanted it to be as natural as possible letting mood be set by nature and ambient lighting!

Whimsical White Ojai Valley Wedding

April 30, 2016 | editorial team

Whimsical-White-Ojai-Valley-Wedding-27

Christina and Brian’s Ojai Valley wedding was a weekend full of love, laughter, and time together. Having gone through some losses in their family recently, Christina and Brian kept family at the heart of their wedding planning. They wanted there to be enough time to spend time visiting with each invited guest, so they rented out Black Walnut Ranch for four days. They agreed that the ranch set forth a very calm and homey environment, and Hanna Photography stayed the weekend and captured every moment of Christina and Brian’s rustic, natural, and whimsical wedding.

I bought the dress very early on in our engagement. I’m the type of person that hates fussing and hates trying on dresses. So when I found that dress, I was done. Fast forward two years later to our wedding, I am so glad I found that dress! I adored the beadwork and sequins, and the fact that it was so light (not heavy at all), that I was able to wear it all night.

The most memorable part of the day was waking up to a gorgeous setting! The day before our wedding, it was super windy and pouring! We all took our time driving up to the ranch, and waited for it to stop raining, to set out tables and décor. I was so worried that it would still be raining and that the grounds would be all muddy and wet the day of. However, when we woke up it was simply breathtaking!

Family was the most important thing when we were planning our wedding, and our budget. We had gone through some losses in our family recently, and decided that we really wanted to promote an environment where we can actually spend time with people.

Everything was personalized. We had so much help from family and friends, that all of our decorations were DIY. From the burlap and beans that my grandmother bought, to the mini moon cacti that my grandfather loves, the pale blue/gray mobile my cousin made, the gold and tulle garlands my sister-in-law made…..everything was handmade.
