Two Photographers Eloping in the Barkley Sound is the Sweetest Thing You’ll See Today

May 2, 2016 | editorial team

Brittany and Sam’s wedding day was truly their own — they ate breakfast and got ready together before taking a boat ride to an undecided island in the Barkley Sound to read their custom vows and say “I do” to each other. They are both photographers, so they knew that choosing a wedding photographer was going to be one of the most important decisions they made. Brittany and Sam loved the artistic vision that Tomasz Wagner Photo & Films provided, and the pictures from their big day perfectly captured the raw displays of emotion and sentiment from their simple and spontaneous day.

Do what you want. Don’t stick to traditions that aren’t significant to you. Eat some halibut omelettes for breakfast with rum and coke, be late to your ceremony to pick up some food cart tacos, wear things you will wear again, feel free to ugly cry your way through the ceremony, do it for yourselves.

My day to day fashion largely consist of vintage dresses so it was only natural nearly every piece had some story behind it. I was quite terrified of the concept of trying on bridal dresses so instead took to scouring Etsy, my normal hunting ground, knowing that a unique piece that could be worn again were my top two priorities. After buying my dress it became a bit of a mission to represent as many decades as I could.

We hired the boat with no destination in mind. It wasn’t until we passed the most unassuming island with a single tree in the centre of it did we all look at each other. Caleb and his crew-mate took the boat out to check its accessibility before picking us up and dropping us off by timing the waves. The spontaneity and uncertainty of it is one of our favourite things to reflect back on.

From the Groom: We loved writing personal vows for each other. The moment that hit us so hard is when we read each other our vows, I absolutely lost it. Just hearing each other’s voice and words written in their personal tone made the day so special and real.

Since both of us are photographers, choosing a photographer was obviously one of the more important decisions of the day. We knew we wanted it to be documented artistically and to be able to trust them entirely. Tomasz and Amy were just that. Their quiet presence made us feel completely at ease, and I cannot imagine anyone else there to be the sole witnesses of what was such an intimate moment in our journey.

Industrial and Wood San Diego Wedding at Luce Loft

May 1, 2016 | editorial team

With the help of their wedding coordinator, Jamie Joe Designs, Charlotte and Luke were able to transform Luce Loft into the wedding venue of their dreams. The building’s natural industrial vibe paired with rich colors and dark woods made for a completely customized ceremony and reception that felt warm and comfortable. They chose to focus a lot on the ceremony, because they both value the vows they made to each other on their big day. After closing out the ceremony with a benediction from Romans 15:13 they shared their first kiss as husband and wife, and photographer Lauren Scotti captured every single moment of the joyful event.

I wanted flower crowns on both me and my bridesmaids. I just love the look of that and it helped tie us all together, especially with all the different colored bridesmaid dresses. I let my bridesmaids chose their own dresses but assigned them colors. I wanted them all to have texture and work with their style as well as mine. I love how they all worked together.

We landed on Luce Loft because it had so much potential. We loved the industrial vibe and knew that with an open space like that we could design our wedding vibe the way we wanted it. They also were so good about letting us do our own thing. They didn’t force us use any of their vendors and were so easy to work with. So it was the perfect fit for us.

We spent time on our wedding message and focused it on the vows as the base of our commitment to each other. After we made our vows, we had our entire bridal party and our close family come and pray for us. We kept the ceremony pretty simple, but we took a long time on the things that we found important to us.

I wanted to have a dress that I was comfortable in and that felt like me. The funny thing is that I asked my fiancee the night before our wedding what he thought my dress looked like and he described it perfectly. I actually thought that he peaked or something, he didn’t. But I think that showed how perfectly my dress worked for me.

Luke made our table numbers by cutting wood blocks, staining them, and putting numbers from home depot on them. We made our table runners just by cutting lace off a super long lace bolt. I had my bridesmaids hand write all of the food identifiers and seating assignments. Then we put the table assignments on twine and hung them across a picture frame.

The other best moment was dancing the last song with my husband with all our guests around us. When I imagined my wedding when I was younger, I always imagined that moment… kind of weird, but I like dancing a lot. So when it happened, it was awesome.

New Orleans Inspired Wedding in the Pacific Northwest at Kiana Lodge

May 1, 2016 | editorial team

Having just moved a couple months before getting engaged, Shannon and Clinton tried to bring as much New Orleans up to to Seattle as they could for their wedding day. They loved the natural beauty and chill cabin vibe that Kiana Lodge provided, and with stunning lakeside views, the lodge was a perfect place for them to say “I do.” Maris Events went above and beyond to understand their wedding vision, even helping to organize a second line complete with handkerchiefs and umbrellas to transition from the dinner to the reception area. Photographer Benj Haish got in on all the fun and captured every happy moment from Shannon and Clinton’s New Orleans inspired celebration!

Clinton surprised me with our two little dogs in tuxes. To see my three handsome guys waiting there for me after all the build up of the day, the dress, the makeup, the schedules, the EVERYTHING….it brought me right back down to Earth. I never wanted a first look, I was actually against it as long as I can remember, and it ended up being one of my favorite moments.

The back of my wedding dress is why I wore it. Period. Still obsessed. The bridesmaids wore a cream white, my dress was cream and gold and the guys were in classic tuxes. It looked awesome. Wanted to add a touch of metal to the earthiness, so there were gold accents everywhere.

Since I was a little girl, my dad has taught me to love bagpipes. It was always my dream to walk down the aisle with my dad to bagpipes. My mom had both of her parents walk her down the aisle, which was always special to her…so we had the pastor surprise my mom and she joined us at the front so they could both give me away as well.

We wanted New Orleans meets the Pacific Northwest. Not something that is done very often, I imagine. We found a 9-piece soul brass band (nearly impossible), they learned a Second Line song “Do Whatcha Wanna” for us and we transitioned from dinner to reception area with a second line procession complete with umbrellas and handkerchiefs.

I made all of our sequin/feather headbands for the reception. My parents caught a bunch of beads at Mardi Gras in New Orleans and shipped them to Seattle. Halfway through the reception, headbands, Mardi Gras beads and top hats were passed out to turn the dance party up a notch. No messing around with purchased beads. These came of the streets of the French Quarter, people!
