Tropical Destination Wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – Jean and Zach

June 25, 2012 | editorial team

Jean and Zach planned a romantic destination wedding in Mexico as a relaxing vacation for all of their guests. The perfect little Monday morning vacation for all of us? Getting to peek at the beautiful Cabo San Lucas beach, the bright tropical color palette, and all of the meaningful details they created! From vibrant flowers and bright paper parasols, to thoughtful touches for their guests like a shoe concierge station, and even a performance at the reception by Zach’s cousin, SMASH star Katharine McPhee, the wedding was a beachy, tropical dream!

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Our family and friends are very important to us and we wanted to treat the wedding as more of a celebration – of our love for each other as well as our loved ones. Zach and I are big on relaxing in the sun so thats how we decided to have a beach destination wedding. We wanted our guests to look forward to the event as a mini-vacation. While we are typically laid back and casual, we both like to dress it up once in awhile – hence our decision to make the bridal and groom attire a bit more formal with the wedding and reception style more casual.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? My absolute favorite moment was our first dance to I Dont Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith. Everything leading up to the first dance – from prepping welcome bags to the first look was a blur. But the first dance was the first chance I was able to relax, let go and be in the moment with my husband.

The best decisions we made were the little details. We incorporated paper parasols and flip flops for guests during the ceremony on the beach, made DIY fan programs that detailed the story of how Zach and I met, had dragon pinatas to incorporate my Chinese heritage and Mexico, and had wooden doll cake toppers designed and painted by my sister and brother-in-law. These details made the whole experience more fun and reflected our personalities.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? I know this advice has been given over and over – but honestly, do not stress over the planning. Things will turn out the way you want them to. The journey is part of the whole experience because your wedding day is really only one day. Enjoy the ride! Also try to incorporate details that reflect you and your groom because that is what pushes a wedding to the next level. And last but not least – if you can, invest in a live band! Something about a real person singing to the crowd puts people in a dancing mood immediately. And it was a real treat to see my husband play the drums in one of the last songs!

Romantic, Rustic Real Wedding in Tagaytay, Philippines – Esel and Gelo

June 22, 2012 | editorial team

elegant outdoor wedding at Hacienda Isabella, Tagaytay, Philippines - photos by destination wedding photographers Jeff and Lisa Photography | Junebug Weddings

Esel and Gelo had imagined the perfect wedding day long before they were engaged. They dreamed of a handcrafted, intimate event filled with personal touches and decor details, and it was every bit as wonderful as they’d hoped when that dream did come true! The couple exchanged vows in a traditional Catholic ceremony at a beautiful chapel, surrounded by their wedding party in flowing goddess gowns for the ladies and traditional Filipino attire for the men. The reception that followed was filled with rustic decor details including succulents, burlap, and natural wood; and included family performances and a deeply meaningful lantern ceremony. Enjoy Esel’s account of their wedding day, with lovely images to illustrate provided by Jeff and Lisa Photography!

The Goals: Even before getting engaged, we both knew we wanted to have our wedding at an intimate location. Hacienda Isabella, an old estate with an open garden, was perfect for the elegant yet relaxed mood we wanted to set for our wedding day. Hacienda was the perfect place for us because we both: 1. love adventure and nature, 2. appreciate old and unique things, 3. love Filipiniana stuff (hence, the barong). It was just fitting to bring our guests to this faraway, romantic place to a road less traveled. We wanted everyone to focus on each other, on building new relationships and deepening friendships on our weekend affair.

Although we are both blessed with big families and great friends, we knew it was impossible to have quality conversations with everyone if we decided to invite them all. We agreed to cap our guests to a maximum of 200 people to make sure that our day would remain intimate and memorable for both of us. This was one of our best decisions because we could take our time talking to our guests and simply enjoy the day.

The Design:  We had a Catholic wedding ceremony at a small rustic chapel, San Antonio de Padua, and our reception was held in the outdoor garden at Hacienda Isabella. We didn’t choose a definitive color palette; we just used anything that fit the look we wanted – rustic. A lot of our decor was either DIY or curated antiques from Hacienda Isabella. We preferred subdued tints as an accent to the overall earthy, wooden look of the venue.

We saw our marriage as the beginning of a big adventure together, so for our invitations we used the image of a couple, in a vintage air balloon taking flight. Our invitations were very simple and we only printed invites for those guests who don’t check the web or their emails regularly, to be earth friendly.

The Look: I love wearing lace and think that nothing speaks more of romance than it does. It was really hard to find the right gown among the many out there, but the modern details on this romantic dress spoke to me. The strapless neckline and the tiered detail on the bottom of the gown added unexpected edginess to the feminine lace. My younger sister and maid of honor Risa de Sagun made all the hair accessories I wore that day. I wore a messy low bun with a sprinkling of these handmade hair pieces in gold and white. I also loved the heirloom jewelry my godmother Roselyn lent me. It was a beautiful topaz drop earring set with pave diamond details.

The Moments: Our wedding had a lot of funny moments that were so memorable! My dad, in his nervous state, mistakenly lifted my veil to the likes of “you may now kiss the bride” which brought laughter throughout the chapel. My wedding march was marked with smiles, giggles and even boisterous laughter, and I wouldn’t have wanted any other way. W also loved that both our families were feeling gutsy that night, and serenaded us with original compositions (by Gelo’s dad and mom) and artsy dance videos (by my entire clan). It was a nice feeling of family and togetherness.

One of the most romantic moments during the wedding was when my husband gave his speech at the end of the night – he told everyone about the first time we met, how our relationship progressed, and how we saw our relationship moving forward. I just felt his sincerity and happiness, and I couldn’t have been happier to have married him that day. Also, we lit sky lanterns at the end of the reception, which was amazing. It was a community event with Gelo and myself in the middle of the circle. We were all asked to make a wedding wish before releasing the lanterns. With all the lanterns up in the sky, everyone was just looking at the stars in silence and enjoying each other’s company. It was really a beautiful moment.

Slate Gray, Green and Ivory Wedding Style Inspiration Shoot

June 21, 2012 | editorial team

I adore the combination of organic textures with modern simplicity in this wedding decor inspiration shoot created by photographer Binita Patel and her talented team of collaborators. From the soft centerpieces in rock containers to the sleek shapes of the table and stemware, this is a table that calls for celebration!

From photographer and photo shoot designer, Binita Patel: This shoot was inspired completely by earth’s simplest color tones: green, slate and ivory. I really wanted to make sure that everything about this shoot felt very clean, simple and natural. Our linen supplier had a wonderful slate-colored over cloth, with a rough and almost rock-like texture, so this was the starting point of the design. From there, I enhanced the concept by choosing rectangular plates to maintain a sense of simplicity and really emphasize clean lines in the tablescape design. I went with more modern-shaped stemware and the the clear mirage chairs to add onto the modern feeling of the theme. I nearly jumped for joy when I saw that the florist had oh-so wonderfully designed the florals using an almost rock-like container. Even our hair and makeup artists stayed true to the theme by selecting natural and minimalist tones for the bride’s look. Everything came together beautifully, and the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter served as a beautiful and open backdrop for the shoot. With modern and colorful art pieces on the walls, the bright colors were the perfect compliment to the simple tones of the overall theme.
