Botanical Toronto Wedding at Spadina House

Wanting to complement the lush florals in the garden at Spadina House, Katie and Josh enlisted the help of Coriander Girl to create a botanical design for their jewel tone wedding. After an unexpected downpour just before their scheduled ceremony, Katie and Josh said “I do” with a little help from their friends and family. Katie’s mother, a pastor, officiated, while other performed heartfelt readings and shared wisdom of married life with the newlyweds. Daring Wanderer captured every emotional moment, as well as the colorful floral design that radiated throughout the day.

We chose our ceremony venue, Spadina House, because I was in love with the idea of an outdoor, garden wedding and it fit the bill perfectly. Their beautiful gardens, lawns, and the architecture made for some beautiful pictures!

Honestly, the most memorable part of the day was the deluge of rain that happened 30 minutes prior to and during our ceremony. We had cancelled our rain back up option because the day before it said it was a 0% chance of rain. It was a gamble! However, not even the rain could dampen our spirits, so all of our guests crowded into the basement of the Spadina House Museum while we waited for the rain to let up. The rain eventually slowed to a drizzle (from a torrent) and so we decided to go for it! We abbreviated the ceremony slightly because our guests were standing and getting a little bit soggy. Nevertheless, looking out at the crowd, there was nothing but beaming smiles! As we came down the aisle, the rain let up and the clouds broke for pictures. I don’t think there is a chance that either us our our guests will forget our ceremony!

I jokingly say that the theme of our ceremony was audience participation! We had a different friend or family member do each part of the ceremony, including: a reading, a bible verse, music leading, officiating (my mum is a pastor so she officiated which was amazing!), and three people sharing some words of wisdom about what love or marriage has meant to them.

The whole thing felt really personal to us, and full of so much love. Even though it was more work to design and plan everything ourselves, I think it turned out so well and we won’t ever forget how meaningful and special that time was.

I love colour! Since our theme was garden/botanical, I wanted there to not be any very defined colour palette and have a more organic (no pun intended!) feeling. Our florist, Coriander Girl, did an amazing job at creating vibrant, and wild looking floral pieces for the tables and also for the hanging arbour that we had suspended over the head table.

Our table numbers were brushed gold frames that held two pieces of glass sandwiched together. I dried and arranged flowers I collected throughout the summer into a collage to incorporate our floral and colourful theme.
