Traditional Korean weddings can be quite involved with lots of movement, many ceremonies and multiple dress changes, but SooYoun and Kevin had complete faith that Ari Simphoukham would be up for the challenge. He creatively captured all the moments with ease, from the traditional tea ceremony, the couple’s glamorous portraits in the city, and emotional moments with family and friends.
Junebug: What three adjectives best describe your wedding?
Soo Youn and Kevin: Traditional, Elegant, Romantic
Junebug: What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day?
Soo Youn and Kevin: Luxury and Elegance. I was inspired by many of the luxurious weddings that I attended over the years. My style and personality was mostly incorporated into my wedding dress and the colors of the wedding. My style usually comes from countries outside of Korea so that’s why I decided to wear a dress from Spain. The venue was requested to create the decor around an ivory color palette which is what I view as a luxurious color.
Junebug: Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding?
Soo Youn and Kevin: One of the strongest memories from the wedding would have to be my husbands dance rendition of Gangnam Style. He had no clue that he was going to be put on the spot to perform the popular dance. The guests loved it!
One of the greatest moments during the wedding was when my mother and mother-in-law embraced each other right before the wedding without being able to communicate to each other in their respective native languages. The moments were captured in perfection by Ari Simphoukham!
Another fond moment would have to be when my father walked me down the aisle and gave my hand to my husband. My father was having a hard time keeping his tears back as he was giving his daughter away.
Junebug: What specifically drew you to Ari Simphoukham and his imagery?
Soo Youn and Kevin: Ari Simphoukham’s photography simply amazed us. His ability to capture classic moments with imagination is what specifically drew us to him. We looked at his portfolio and his previous weddings just blew us away. We love the originality that Ari brings to wedding photography. We looked at almost every single Korean photographer out there but no one compared to what Ari brought to the table. He brings a new and fresh outlook to wedding photography. Korean weddings are not the easiest things to capture because of all the moving pieces but we knew from his portfolio that this wouldn’t be too much of a challenge from him.
