Sarah and Lee spent a fun-filled, romantic weekend in the small mining town of Ouray, Colorado for their engagement session, and collaborated with Chowen Photography to create natural and elegant photographs that capture the beautiful location as well as all their memories, from sweet to goofy to perfectly classic. Absolutely darling!
Junebug: What specifically drew you to Chowen Photography and their imagery?
Lee: Chowen was one of the first wedding portfolios we had seen where we felt like they were able to capture moments, rather than simply portraits, and do them in an artful, whimsical way. It wasn’t just an engagement session we were getting from them, but a catalog of lifelong memories from one of my favorite days, with my favorite person. We stretched our wedding budget a bit to squeeze them in, but we knew that the photos last forever, and the food doesn’t. Plus, Sarah is a photographer herself, so she wanted nothing but the best for our wedding photography.
Junebug: Where did you choose to have your engagement photos taken, and why?
Sarah and Lee: We just love spending time together in the Rocky Mountains and wanted to showcase, not only our love for the outdoors, but the grand scenes of the Colorado Rockies. We knew the Telluride/Ouray, Colorado area is easily packed with some of the best scenery in the country. Chowen Photography is based just a little over an hour or more away, so we drove about 7 hours from Denver and made a fun weekend of it. Heidi said her husband, Daniel, was familiar with the area, so we left the specific locations up to their creative eye. They did so well. Instead of scooting over to Telluride, we ended up spending the whole day in Ouray, with some amazing locations to shoot photos. The conditions it takes to really help take a photo session to the next level were all there; great locations, fun attitudes, and creative minds. With those three elements in play, photographers like Chowen Photography can turn what would’ve been a great shoot, into an incredible one!
Junebug: Is there anything else you would like to share with us about your love story or your lives?
Lee: Our love story is a bit of a long one, but comes with a good ending. The abridged version is: I met Sarah while playing with a band, Luminate, on the road at Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, Illinois. I always referred to her as my “dream girl” because the night before we talked for the first time, I had a dream about a girl I was going to marry. At first, she was only as interested as one could be in someone who lived such a long distance away, so we never dated and tried remaining friends. Although, that was tough to do, because a girl like Sarah is the type you fall in love with at first glance, so I had to deal with that for a few seasons. However, I never gave up the dream of her, and as much as I tried, I couldn’t push aside the few memories I had of all those phone calls, talking late into the night. After a two year chase, and a text from her that said “don’t forget about me,” I made the move to Colorado to make one final push to try and catch the girl of my dreams. After that, we started dating, and only now does it feel like the story has actually begun. I’m working on a much longer version of this story for a novel called, “How to Snag the Girl of Your Dreams,” because it’s not everyday a guy like me catches the heart of a girl like her, so I feel like it’s worth writing about.
From the Photographers: Chowen Photography
Sarah and Lee traveled south from big city Denver to little mining town Ouray, CO with every intention of making their engagement session a memorable one. It was perfect as it was the tail end of the fall season. The colors were still around, but only in concentrated areas. We scouted some of our favorite trails and wooded area before meeting with them. The objective for the day was to bounce around Ouray, both in and out of town photographing in different locations to get the Colorado feel. They love Colorado just as much as we do.
Meeting clients for the first time for a photo-session can be a tad nerve bending for everyone involved, so it is the Chowen Photography preferred method to arrange a meeting at a local watering hole prior to taking any gear out of the bags. Our day started together at The Ouray Brewery pub and restaurant in downtown Ouray. They brew a great I.P.A and the atmosphere is non-threatening. The four of us hit it off right away. Turns out Sarah and Lee share a love of photography themselves and we had much to discuss on the topic of being in front of and behind the camera. They are both artistic minded people and obviously very in love with each other.
Thanks to the ice breaking (and cocktails), there was absolutely no apprehension on the couples part and the day went great. When clients really encourage each other weeks out from a shoot and prepare by shopping together and trying on clothes for each other, the day the shoot finally comes is so much more comfortable than one full of unknowns and unwanted surprises. These guys were dialed in on what they love and who they are and it showed. As photographers, we can not express how much we appreciate preparation. It goes a long way toward delivering a final product that is both polished and natural.
We love these two and can’t wait for their wedding in Aspen, Colorado later this year.
Thanks to Chowen Photography for sharing these beautiful photos, and thank you, Sarah and Lee, for giving us a peek into your magical day together. We can’t wait to see your wedding!
