Glassy, clear enough to see straight to the sand, exactly the kind of calm you’d want behind you at the altar. It was my first time on the island, and the surprises started before I’d even left the airport. The road out was lined with cacti, not palm trees, and I learned quickly that Aruba is part desert, part beach, and entirely its own thing. At the resort, I kept meeting couples and families on their third, fourth, even fifth trip back. That’s not a coincidence. Aruba becomes a habit for the people who visit, a place they return to on purpose, and it’s easy to see why it also makes such a compelling backdrop for a Caribbean destination wedding.

Aruba: One Happy Island

Let’s say you already know you want a beach wedding. The real question is still wide open: which beach, on which island, out of the hundreds claiming to be the one. If a Caribbean destination wedding is what you’re after, that decision is worth getting right. Here’s my case for Aruba.

Start with the weather. The island sits far enough south in the Caribbean, around 12 degrees north, that it falls outside the main hurricane belt, and it hasn’t taken a direct hit in decades. That means no scrambling to reschedule flights, or worse, moving a ceremony indoors because of a storm. Temperatures stay remarkably steady too, hovering between 80 and 90 degrees year-round, so there’s no real ‘off season’ to plan around.

Then there’s the detail nobody thinks to ask about: wind. Aruba’s trade winds blow almost constantly, keeping the beach comfortable even at midday, which matters a great deal if you’re planning to say your vows outside in the sun. And on the island’s south shore, that wind doesn’t translate into waves. The water stays flat and clear, closer to a lap pool than an ocean, and safe enough for guests of any swimming ability to wade in without a second thought.

Image provided by Aruba Marriott Resort

Then there’s the mood. Aruba calls itself the ‘One Happy Island,’ and after a few days there, I understood why the nickname stuck. It shows up in small ways: a cab driver offering a printed guide to the island, a server remembering your order from the day before, a local museum employee giving an unprompted, gleeful tour. A wedding, at its core, is asking a place to hold a few days of pure happiness for you and everyone you love. Aruba’s been practicing that for years.

And practically speaking, it’s an easy sell to guests. Direct flights make it simple to get there, the destination itself feels fresh rather than overdone, and it tends to be a friendlier price point than Hawaii or much of Europe, while still giving guests a completely different trip than the beaches of Mexico they may have already done.

It’s Easy to Love the Island from Aruba Marriott Resort

Picking Aruba is one decision. Picking the venue you’ll actually spend the wedding weekend is the next one, and it matters just as much. That became clear within an hour of checking in, when the Aruba Marriott Resort transported me into paradise. Fresh off a multi-million-dollar renovation, the property has 414 rooms, two pools (one of which is adults-only), and ten on-site restaurants and bars. It’s also home to the island’s largest casino and largest spa.

When I arrived, I headed straight to the lobby bar and ordered an Aloe Spritz, a fresh cocktail built around the plant that’s practically the island’s mascot. It was a fitting preview of the meals that followed. We dined at two of the resort’s standout restaurants, Mercat and Atardi, where a pistachio-crusted salmon and a macadamia-crusted grouper were my outstanding main courses.

Breakfast, though, deserves its own moment. Nana’s is a brand-new spot at the resort serving Dutch pancakes, a nod to the island’s Dutch heritage, in both sweet and savory versions. My brie and pecan pancake, plus a chocolate-covered stroopwafel on the side, made for such a fun and tasty start to my trip.

The adults-only pool quickly became my favorite, tucked just far enough from the main pool to feel like its own quiet corner. The beach itself sits right off the property, with rows of lounge chairs and umbrellas that make it easy to settle in for an entire day without a second thought. The spa deserves its own mention too. It came out of the renovation completely reimagined, with a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, hot tub, and a team of massage therapists who clearly know what they’re doing.

A Beautiful Location and a Standout Hotel Make for One Great Wedding Venue

Now, for the actual wedding. The resort is large enough that your entire guest list can stay on property, which in my experience is what actually makes a wedding weekend feel like one continuous party instead of a single night everyone commutes to. To get the process started, there is an on-site planning and events team with set packages to choose from, so you’re not left building a wedding from scratch.

My experience at the resort included a full mock rehearsal dinner and ceremony set up by the weddings and events team. It was a full design experience, down to the smallest of details, and it gave me a real sense of what a wedding here could actually look like.

On my first night, the team walked us out to a wide, sandy lawn framed by towering palms, roomy enough for a full rehearsal dinner and open on one side to the ocean. We watched the sunset from there, the sky moving through pink and orange in the time it took to finish a drink, and the trade winds I mentioned earlier meant it never once felt too warm to be outside.

The ceremony itself was the next day, set right on the beach. The florals leaned into jewel tones, a striking departure from the yellow, orange, and red arrangements you typically see at beach weddings. As we took our seats, servers offered personalized coconut drinks, each one marked with a name. It’s the kind of small touch a guest actually remembers.

Images by Demian Gibbs Photography

The team behind all of it deserves its own mention.
