You’ve kickstarted your wedding planning journey by creating your ideal budget. You’ve begun comparing vendors, venues, and catering options…and now you’re officially overwhelmed. These hefty price tags might take you by surprise, especially if this is your first rodeo. But we’re here to remind you: you can pull off your dream celebration without breaking the bank.

Our goal is to help couples–no matter their vision or desired budget–plan the wedding of their dreams. So if you’re looking to save money, here are some simple ways you can cut costs and still get everything you’ve dreamed of.

How To Save Money On A Wedding

1. Use a Free Wedding Budget Tool

Starting your planning process by using a free wedding budget tool will make it easy to see where your money is being spent. It’ll keep you organized and allow you to keep track of your wedding finances all in one place.

2. Use A Credit Card To Score Rewards

We owe a big “thank you” to TikTok for this handy wedding planning tip. Before spending any money on your wedding day, consider getting a credit card specifically for wedding purchases. This allows you to keep track of your spending and  gives you the chance to score rewards and cash-back deals. These can be used to pay off your celebration or to book an epic honeymoon

3. Hire Local Wedding Vendors

If you hire vendors outside your surrounding area, you’ll likely be responsible for covering their travel costs. This will be added on top of their quoted prices. That’s why we recommend searching for trusted local vendors first. This will save on any additional fees you might not have accounted for in your budget. Want to start the search but not sure how? Check out our directory of wedding vendors from around the world!

4. Start Shopping Early to Score Deals

Don’t wait until the last minute to start your shopping, especially when it comes to wedding day attire. Not only will a head start eliminate any stress, it also gives you the opportunity to shop around. You’ll have time to look for the best price and hopefully score some money-saving deals.

5. Rent Your Wedding Day Attire

Rather than purchasing your wedding day attire, do some research on rental companies. There are an abundance of online and brick-and-mortar shops that help couples save money. They offer short-term rentals for wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, suits, and even accessories.

6. Host a Weekday Wedding

Weekend weddings are typically the most popular, and venue prices will reflect that. That’s why it probably comes as no surprise that hosting a weekday wedding will save you a significant amount of money.

7. Create a Wedding Website

Don’t have room in your budget for paper invitations? No problem. Don’t want to have to worry about keeping track of mailed RSVP cards? We understand. Wedding websites are your money and time-saving solution. They are a handy resource that stores all your event information in one place—your wedding timeline, registry, and even an RSVP option.

8. Trim Your Guest List

Creating a wedding guest list is a difficult task—and unfortunately it’s one of the most important. But, for those looking to save money, we recommend taking one more look. Is there anyone you feel obligated to invite? If the answer is “yes,” trim your guest list a tad bit more.

9. Limit Your Plus Ones

If you’re unable to trim your guest list, consider limiting your plus one invitations. Extend the option to those married, in long-term relationships, and to those in your wedding party. There’s no need to give one to every guest.

10. Host Your Ceremony and Reception at One Place

When finding your dream venue, there’s a lot to consider. One important detail to think about is the venue size.Is it large enough to host your ceremony and reception? This is an important question to ask before signing any contracts. Hosting both of these events in the same location will save big bucks on transportation.

11. Pick a Venue With Stunning Existing Features

When venue shopping, it’s important to find a space that has existing features you can incorporate into your overall wedding design. With a stunning foundation, you’ll be able to cut down on the amount of decor you’ll need to purchase.

12. Tie The Knot in your Backyard

Backyard weddings have become increasingly popular, and it’s a trend we don’t see going away anytime soon. It adds a sentimental touch to your celebration and saves money that can be allocated to other wedding day elements.

13. Repurpose Your Ceremony Decor

Bridesmaid bouquets can become centerpieces. Your ceremony backdrop can become the backdrop to your sweetheart table. Your ceremony seating can be pushed into your reception tables. There are a variety of ways to repurpose your ceremony decor to save money in your overall budget

Junebug Tip: Use BloomsyBox, a flower subscription company, for your wedding florals. You choose what flowers you want and get them hand-delivered to your door. They even offer dozens of pre-made bouquets. Junebug readers get 10% off with the code JUNEBUG

14. Go Thrifting For Decor

Time is money during your wedding planning season. But if you have extra time to spend hunting down unique glassware, rugs, and even furniture, you’ll save big dollars on your decor.

15. Your Jewelry Can Be Your Something Borrowed

If you’re searching for your something borrowed, you just found it. Jewelry often costs a pretty penny. That’s why you should consider wearing a family heirloom or ask special loved ones to borrow their cherished pieces.

16. Stick to Custom Cocktails

Creating custom cocktails is just one way to add personality to your reception. Rather than having a fully stocked bar, limit your alcohol options. During your cocktail hour, you can serve up your signature cocktails. And when the reception begins, you can add more options like wine and beer.

17. Purchase Your Own Alcohol

Stocking your reception bar can be a bit pricey. This is especially the case if you’re having a third party take on this responsibility. If you have time and want to save a bit of money, consider purchasing your own alcohol before the big day. Wholesalers such as Costco and Sam’s Club are lifesavers for this.

18. Skip Hors D’oeuvres During the Cocktail Hour

After the ceremony, it’s common for guests to be served drinks and hors d’oeuvres at the cocktail hour while the couple snaps photos with their photographer. During this time, focus on the drinks and skip the snacks. Being so close to dinner time, they aren’t necessary for those trying to cut costs.

19. Ditch the Formal Meal for a Buffet

Newsflash–you don’t have to drain your bank account to serve up a memorable and delicious meal at your wedding. You can actually save money on your catering by choosing a less-formal, buffet-style menu.

20. Host a Brunch Wedding

There’s a reason why everyone loves brunch. And we think bottomless mimosas and breakfast foods are underrated in the wedding world. Not only will a daytime rental save you money on your venue, but hosting a brunch celebration will also give your wedding a unique spin—much like this couple did with their cereal bar.

21. Wedding Cake Alternative

When you think of dessert at a wedding, odds are your mind immediately pictures a large tiered cake. And we understand this may be the dream for many couples out there. But, if you’re trying to save money and plan a truly unique celebration, you should consider a dessert alternative. We’re talking s’mores, donuts, an ice cream bar—the options are endless.

Wanting a creative dessert option without having to skip that oh-so-sweet cake-cutting moment? Scale down your original cake design or use a styrofoam replica. You can use that for your photos, then serve up your alternative desserts to the guests.

22. DIY Photo Booth

Any DIY project is sure to save you money while planning your wedding. You can DIY anything from bouquets to signage. But one major decor and entertainment element we recommend trying to DIY is your photo booth. In need of some ideas? Check out our favorite photo booth ideas to spark some inspiration.

23. Recruit Friends and Family

I you find yourself wondering “how to save money on a wedding,” you might just have the answer on the guest list. Have a florist in the family? Maybe a baker? If you have some talented loved ones, ask them to get involved. Not only will it save you money, but it’ll make them feel important and will give you some quality time together.

24. Skip Wedding Favors

Wedding favors are a great way to show your appreciation for your guests, but they’re not required. For couples looking to save on their wedding day budget, these might be the first to go. After your incredible celebration full of food, alcohol, and a whole lot of dancing, your guests aren’t going to be upset if there aren’t any favors. In fact, a lot of times they end up getting left behind.

25. Consider an Elopement

If the wedding planning process becomes too stressful or expensive, eloping is always an option. You can go down to the local courthouse or plan a low-key destination wedding for just the two of you. These intimate weddings make you the priority while helping you cut costs.

Talking about money isn’t always the most fun conversation to have, especially when wedding planning. It’s easy to get lost in the fun details like creating mood boards, dress shopping, and assembling your floral arrangements. That’s where we come in.

Kickstart your planning process by reading our how-to guide for creating a wedding budget fit for you and your partner. Then download and use our free wedding budget tool throughout your journey to stay on track.

7 Ways to Help Your Bridesmaids Save Money

January 25, 2023 | Junebug Weddings

Image by Saje Photography. Keep scrolling to read how to save your bridesmaids money

The day you ask your bridesmaids to stand beside you at your wedding is filled with butterflies and emotions. They’re the group you’ll count on throughout the entire wedding planning process. They will help in any way needed and spend whatever is necessary to make your big day perfect.

Before you get too far into the details, take a moment to remember one important thing: your bridesmaids are people with their own jobs, responsibilities, and budgets. Many of them may not be able to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for your wedding without making sacrifices in other parts of their lives. They also might not admit it. Rather than put anyone in an uncomfortable budget situation, consider these ways to help save your bridesmaids money.

How to Save Your Bridesmaids Money

1. Let Them Choose Their Own Dresses

The mismatched bridesmaid trend is stronger than ever and doesn’t look like it’ll be going anywhere anytime soon. Not only does this option add a fresh and modern look to your wedding, but it’s more budget-friendly than choosing one dress from one store. Plus, it removes the stress of trying to pick one style that fits different body types.

By letting them choose their own dresses, you’re empowering them to shop within their own budget, wear a designer or brand they feel confident in, and find a dress they can wear beyond the wedding. If you’re still nervous about trying this trend, take a peek at this inspiration on how to create that perfect mismatched look.

2. Be Flexible with Shoe Options

The mismatched trend doesn’t just apply to dresses—it includes shoes, too. Some of your bridal party might want to rock heels while others might feel their best wearing flats. Keep your bridesmaids comfortable for the entire day with shoes that fit their style, personality, and budget.

To create some uniformity, you can choose one color or tone in a specific finish—satin, matte, etc—and let them choose the style. That way they can find shoes in their price range, wear a pair they already own, or borrow from a friend. Not sure where to start? Nude is always a safe color option and will look great with just about any dress your girls choose.

3. Give Them Practical Gifts

The sweetest way to show your bridal party some extra love is with a thoughtful bridesmaid gift. While something purely sentimental or novel might be your first thought, consider giving your bridesmaids an item that they can wear on the wedding day and beyond. This could include a cute robe to wear when getting ready or accessories that complete their wedding day look, such as a necklace, bracelet, or wrap. This takes at least one important item off their must-buy list and will be something they cherish for years to come.

4. Don’t Require Professional Hair and Makeup

Professional hair and makeup can cost each bridesmaid anywhere from $75 -$300, which can be hard on the wallet. Most people are perfectly capable of doing their own makeup. Perhaps you even have a beauty guru friend who could help out with the rest of the party.

If you decide you want everyone to get their hair and makeup professionally done and your budget affords it, offer to pay for it. If you can afford to pay for hair/makeup and a bridesmaid gift, more power to you. But if you have to choose one or the other, consider opting to take the burden off your bridesmaids’ budgets.

5. Encourage Them to Forego Wedding Gifts

Your bridesmaids have to buy dresses and shoes, plan and pay for a bachelorette party and bridal shower, pay for necessary travel and accommodations, and volunteer a significant amount of their time for pre-wedding events. That’s a long list of pretty substantial and thoughtful gifts. Rather than expecting them to buy something off your wedding registry, assure them that their presence is the only present you need. Besides, your guests will have the registry covered.

Some of your bridesmaids might feel guilty showing up to events empty-handed, so let them know early on in the planning stages that you don’t expect a gift. Not only will they appreciate the sentiment, but it’ll open up their budget for other things—like an epic destination bachelorette party.

6. Consolidate Events to Limit Travel Expenses

Between the wedding shower, the bachelorette party, the rehearsal dinner, and the actual wedding day, travel expenses can add up quickly. Consolidate some of those events to the same weekend to cut down on the number of plane tickets, hotel rooms, or tanks of gas your bridesmaids need to buy. Ask your Maid of Honor to pick one city for both the wedding shower and the bachelorette party so they can take place on the same weekend—or even the same day.

If the events can’t line up, suggest that the bachelorette party be the night before the wedding rehearsal so your bridesmaids can simply come in a day early for the wedding weekend. Whether you’re able to consolidate events or not, it’s important to be supportive and flexible if a bridesmaid cannot attend every event. She’ll be there for the most important day, which is what really matters.

7. Find Creative Accommodations

As you look for accommodations for your out-of-town bridesmaids, keep budget-friendly options at the top of your list. If you’re going the hotel route, thoroughly research options around the city and choose the most reasonable ones. Then reach out to the hotel to negotiate a room block discount or keep an eye out for discounted rates that pop up.

If you want an even less expensive option for your guests—or just your bridal party—check out listings on Airbnb or VRBO. You and your bridesmaids can split a large rental house the night before the wedding, which would be cost-effective for everyone and give you much more space to get ready in the morning. If you want to be super generous—and have space—you could even offer your place while they’re in town for the best slumber party ever.

Digital Wedding Invitations Are an Often Overlooked Way to Save Time, Cut Costs, and Unleash Your Creativity

March 5, 2025 | justine

From the perfect venue to a meaningful guest list, couples want each element to reflect their style and vision—and invitations are no exception. They set the tone for your big day, giving guests a first glimpse of what’s to come. While traditional paper invites have long been the norm, digital wedding invitations are becoming a popular choice for their convenience, creativity, and sustainability.

One of the biggest advantages of going digital is the flexibility to make your invitations uniquely yours. Video invitations, in particular, are a growing trend, allowing couples to bring their love story to life. Whether it’s clips from your engagement shoot, a heartfelt message, or a cinematic teaser of your big day, a video invite creates an emotional connection that a static design simply can’t. Plus, with built-in RSVP tracking and guest management tools, digital invitations do more than just impress—they make planning easier.

Common Misconceptions About Digital Invitations

Despite their growing popularity, some couples hesitate to go digital due to a few common myths. Let’s clear them up:

  • “Digital invitations aren’t elegant enough.” Today’s digital invites can be just as sophisticated as printed ones, featuring high-end designs, animations, and even luxurious typography.
  • “Older guests won’t know how to use them.” Most digital invitation platforms are user-friendly, and you can always send a direct link or even assist certain guests personally.
  • “They feel less personal.” A well-designed digital invite can be just as heartfelt—especially if you incorporate video messages, personalized notes, or interactive elements.
  • “Guests will miss the invite in their inbox.” Using platforms with RSVP tracking and automated reminders ensures your invite won’t go unnoticed.

The Benefits of Digital Wedding Invitations

Switching to digital invitations isn’t just about going paperless—it’s about saving time, cutting costs, and adding a personal touch. Here’s why more couples are making the switch:

  • Saves Money – Printing and postage costs add up quickly. Digital invites help cut expenses without sacrificing style.
  • Eco-Friendly Choice – A paperless option means less waste and a smaller environmental footprint.
  • Saves Time & Effort – No need for envelope-stuffing or last-minute post office runs—send invites in just a few clicks.
  • Easy to Track & Manage – Built-in RSVP tracking and guest list tools keep everything organized in one place.
  • Endless Creative Possibilities – Add animations, videos, or interactive elements to make your invitations truly one-of-a-kind.

Beyond the Wedding Invitation: Digital Stationery for Every Milestone

Digital wedding stationery isn’t just for the main wedding invitation—couples are embracing paperless designs for every stage of their wedding journey. Whether you want to announce your engagement, keep guests informed, or express gratitude after the big day, digital options provide a stylish, convenient, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper.

  • Engagement Announcements – Let your friends and family in on the big news with a digital announcement. Whether it’s a quick message, a sweet photo, or even a short clip from the proposal, it’s an easy way to share the excitement. This is a great way to spread the word without waiting for formal invitations.
  • Save the Dates – You can send a stylish design or even a fun video from your engagement shoot—either way, it’s a great way to give guests a heads-up.
  • Rehearsal Dinner & Pre-Wedding Events – Instead of sending separate paper invites, digital invitations make it easy to inform guests about events like the rehearsal dinner, wedding shower, or welcome party.
  • Post-Wedding Thank You Notes – You can send personalized thank-you messages, include highlights from the wedding, or even share a short honeymoon recap video as a heartfelt gesture to guests.

Digital wedding invitations are a modern, stylish, and practical choice—but they don’t have to replace tradition completely. Many couples opt for a hybrid approach, using paper for formal invites and digital for save-the-dates, rehearsal dinners, and thank-you notes. For added convenience, you can include a QR code on printed invites to direct guests to your wedding website or RSVP page.

Ultimately, your wedding invitations should reflect your personality, style, and vision for your big day. Whether you go digital, stick with tradition, or find a happy medium, what matters most is that your invitations set the perfect tone for a celebration that’s uniquely you.

Where to Save and Where to Splurge on Your Wedding Day

March 28, 2024 | kailey

Image by Ariana Tennyson. See more of this real wedding here.

Visualize your wedding budget as a puzzle. Various pieces need to fit together in order to bring your dream celebration to life. That’s why it’s crucial to discuss finances with your partner beyond just setting an overall budget. You’ll need to break down the percentage allocated to each category, such as catering, florals, fashion, and more.

While there’s no shortage of advice on what to do and what not to do during wedding planning, it’s important to recognize that there are no concrete rules, especially when it comes to budgeting. Every couple’s financial situation and wedding priorities will be unique, which should give you some relief.

Fortunately, there are ways to rework your budget to pull off your dream wedding. For those who wonder where to save versus where to save, here are some Junebug vendor-approved strategies on where to save versus splurge on your wedding day.

Where to Save During Wedding Planning?

Save on Venue Costs by Choosing a Weekday or Off-Peak Date

Your venue plays an important role in our wedding theme and aesthetic. So, if you’ve found the perfect venue space but it’s a little outside your budget, skip the Saturday celebration for a weekday or Sunday wedding. Going with an off-peak time based on the local seasons will also save you the money you can allocate towards different wedding details.

Trim Your Guest List

Photographer Lynn Shapiro Photography suggests you can save money by trimming your guest list. By keeping your guest count on the smaller side, you can allocate more of your budget toward your photographer and other vendors, ensuring you have exactly what you want for your special day.

Skip Bridesmaids Proposals

Popping the question to your bridesmaids has become an internet sensation thanks to social media. With many going all out with full bridesmaid-themed boxes, this proposal isn’t cheap. But we’re here to remind you that you can skip the massive gift boxes and reallocate that money towards other wedding expenses. Saving this money at the beginning of your wedding planning journey will ensure you’re leaving room in your budget for unplanned finances down the line.

Repurpose Ceremony Decor During Your Reception

When it comes to decorating your ceremony space, there are so many details to consider. You have to think about the backdrop, seating, floral arrangements, signage, and so much more. That takes a lot of time, effort, and money. Replicating this effort for the reception just adds to the financial and planning stresses. To alleviate this, consider repurposing your ceremony decor for the reception.

For instance, your ceremony backdrop can serve as a charming sweetheart table backdrop. Bridesmaid’s bouquets can be used as centerpieces, adding a cohesive decor touch. Repurposing chairs around reception tables can reduce those rental costs. The possibilities are truly endless, and with the help of a planner, you can brainstorm more creative ways to repurpose decor.

Have a Limited Bar

Having a limited reception bar doesn’t mean resorting to a cash bar. You can still offer an open bar at your wedding, but choose to provide limited alcohol options. Consider offering beer and wine, forgoing the more expensive spirits. Additionally, some venues allow couples to purchase their own alcohol, providing another opportunity to save money. Although this may add another task to your wedding checklist, it can result in significant savings in the long run.

Alternative Dessert Options

While you may envision a grand five-tiered wedding cake to share with all your guests, it might not be the most practical choice financially. Instead, consider opting for a smaller wedding cake to enjoy with your partner and for the cake-cutting photo. For guests, offer alternative dessert options such as donuts, s’mores, or other treats. This not only saves on costs but also adds a sense of variety.

Skip Physical Wedding Favors

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on guest favors that may be left behind, consider investing that money into another must-have wedding detail. But what if you want to save this money but don’t want to skip favors? Get creative with some cost-effective ideas.

There are many special–and free–ideas to show your appreciation without breaking the bank. One of our favorites is to create a custom playlist for guests to remember your big day. This not only saves money but also provides guests with an enjoyable keepsake from your wedding.

Where to Splurge on Your Wedding Day?

Photographer and Videographer

It’s no surprise that photographers and videographers top our list of wedding splurges. Your wedding day is a special occasion filled with unforgettable moments, and hiring a top-notch photographer and videographer ensures that these moments are captured and preserved forever. By entrusting professionals, you can focus on soaking up those soon-to-be memories without the stress of trying to document every moment yourself.

Day-Of Coordinator or Wedding Planner

When it comes to recruiting planning help, you have two options: a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator. A wedding planner assists you throughout the entire planning process, from start to finish. A day-of coordinator typically steps in during the final weeks leading up to your big day to ensure everything runs smoothly. Regardless of which option you choose, do yourself a favor and splurge on this vendor.

Music and Entertainment

Music plays a crucial role in setting the tone for every aspect of a wedding day, which is why it’s on our splurge list. From the walk down the aisle to the first dance and mother-son dance, the right songs can enhance these important moments. While music will impact the overall vibe of the day, your choice of DJ or live music will also be responsible for getting your guests to hit the dance floor during the reception.

Splurge on Your Wedding Day with Food and Catering

When planning a wedding, it’s standard to provide a variety of food options for your guests. Your choice of food can impact the overall guest experience, and unfortunately, in the wedding industry, this isn’t cheap. So, whether you opt for a plated meal, buffet, or grab-and-go food truck options, it’s essential not to skimp on catering. This will save you from having a group of hungry guests hitting the dance floor with rumbling stomachs.

Setting a budget is typically one of the first wedding planning tasks you’ll take care of. Unfortunately, it’s all too common for couples to underestimate wedding costs. This can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you’re working with a tight budget.

To avoid this situation, it’s essential to have realistic budget expectations from the start. Understand where you want to save versus splurge on your wedding day. This will give you a better understanding of the wedding expenses involved and allow you to plan accordingly. So, before moving forward, check out our expected vs realistic wedding costs breakdown so there are no surprises down the line.

How To Thoughtfully Give Money As A Wedding Gift

June 13, 2023 | kailey
How To Give Money As A Wedding Gift

Image by Alexa Frankovitch. See more of this styled shoot here.

Wedding guests often struggle to find the perfect gift. Gifts that’ll not only be appreciated but also hold significance for the newlyweds. That’s why, nowadays, many people are choosing to give money as a wedding gift. It gives the couple the freedom to use it as they please, ensuring they can use it on something they really want, whether that’s an epic honeymoon or fancy new kitchen appliances. However, simply handing over an envelope of cash may seem impersonal—until now.

To help make your monetary contribution both thoughtful and memorable, we’ve rounded up some creative and meaningful ways to give money as a wedding gift.

How To Give Money As A Wedding Gift

1. Send It Virtually

Wedding websites are a new wedding trend that we don’t see going away anytime soon and for a good reason. They are fully customizable and house all the wedding information, including event details, RSVPs, and even registry lists. Many couples will reserve a section on their wedding website for guests to send money virtually, adding a touch of modern convenience to the gift-giving experience. You can also send money via Venmo, Paypal, or even Zelle.

2. Donate to the Couple’s Chosen Charity

Couples looking to give back during the wedding planning process might ask guests to donate money to a charity rather than gifting physical gifts. It’s a great way to give back, but it also takes the pressure off you, allowing you to donate whatever you’re comfortable with.

3. Give A Gift Card

You want to give a thoughtful gift without just throwing money their way, but you also don’t want to settle on one physical gift. If this is the position you find yourself in, then a gift card is the way to go. This allows you to put extra thought into where you purchase the gift card from while still giving the couple the flexibility to choose what they purchase. If you notice that many of their registered items come from a specific store, consider choosing a gift card there so they can buy whatever doesn’t get picked up once the wedding is over.

4. Contribute To Their Honeymoon

One of the most heartfelt and practical ways to show your love for a newlywed couple is by contributing to their honeymoon. You can play a part in creating an unforgettable post-wedding getaway by giving cash or covering some of their honeymoon expenses. Consider offering to pay for their hotel charges or covering specific experiences they wish to have during their honeymoon, like an adventurous excursion, a romantic dinner, or a spa day.

While this gift would take a little extra planning, it’s the ultimate gift that keeps giving, creating cherished memories that’ll last a lifetime.

5. Help Save For Big Life Events

Gifting money becomes even more meaningful when you align it with the couple’s specific life goals. If you know they’re actively saving for a house, consider contributing to their “buy a home fund.” If the couple is expecting a baby or actively trying to conceive, offer money to cover baby expenses. By tailoring your gift to the couple and acknowledging their big life goals, you transform your money gift into a truly meaningful gesture.

How Much To Give As A Wedding Gift

Now that we’ve explored some unique ways to give money as a wedding gift, it’s time to dive into the difficult question of how much to give. Determining the appropriate amount depends on your budget and the closeness of your relationship with the couple. For those you consider close friends and family members, a minimum of $100 is recommended. For acquaintances, cutting that number in half to a minimum of $50 is a thoughtful gesture.

It’s important to remember that the value of your gift isn’t solely based on the amount you give. Your loved ones will appreciate your kind gesture regardless of the amount you give.

Your loved ones just announced their engagement, and now you’re getting an early start on hunting down the perfect gift. While the wedding day is still on the horizon, you might want to start by showing your love a little sooner. And if that’s the case, check out our favorite engagement gift ideas that’ll make you the ultimate gift giver, setting the stage for the equally thoughtful, upcoming wedding day gift.

Nova 535 Saved the Day When This Couple’s Venue Cancelled the Day Before the Wedding

June 9, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

When faced with the most stressful news a bride and groom can receive the day before their wedding, Natalie and Luke rolled with the punches and pulled off an indescribably charming celebration at Nova 535! Despite the venue change, which lead to canceling vendors and having to rethink the entire design of their day, the couple had a beautiful outdoor ceremony on a patio lined with bamboo trees and a cozy, modern reception in the downtown event space. They also took full advantage of the city’s impressive murals for a fun, colorful, and quirky portrait session with Savannah Lauren Photography. This wedding is proof that, even if everything doesn’t go according to plan, your wedding day will be perfect because of the person you marry and the loved ones you have by your side!

The Couple:

Natalie and Luke

The Wedding:

Nova 535, St. Petersburg, Florida

Our original venue called the day before our wedding and said they were double-booked, even though we had booked them more than a year out, and they had our deposit. (The wedding they chose to host was double the size of ours, so they made double the money.) We had to cancel some of our vendors and abandon the booze we had purchased. Nova 535 offers their own bar, tables, chairs and staff — I wish we had booked them from the beginning.

With less than 24 hours to throw a wedding together over a holiday weekend, we thought we’d have to get married in a Target parking lot, but my cousin recommended Nova 535 and somehow they were available. I now believe in miracles! Michael, the event coordinator at the venue, was so kind and generous with us — he made us feel like everything was under control.

Our wedding vibe chose itself. We planned to rely on the outdoors vibe of the venue that ditched us, but with less than 24 hours to pull a vibe together, we relied on the venue — which is beautiful — and our friends’ and family’s vibe, which is pretty fun and weird and lovely. If you haven’t figured it out yet, the most important part of a wedding is the people. It’s about the people, people!

We walked around the streets and alleys of downtown St. Petersburg with our friends, which really cracked us up because none of us expected to be taking photos in an alley.

Savannah Lauren Photography is not just a brilliant photographer, she is an amazing human. She is so generous of heart, funny, interesting, intuitive, and colorful. She really got to know us. Now we’re friends. She’s one of a kind.

When people ask what our favorite parts of the wedding were, we always mention Savannah. Our wedding had the potential to be a disaster — and I guess technically it was. When we were with Savannah, all of the craziness melted away. She created space for us to focus on why we were there.

Let’s Talk Wedding Budget + 6 Ways to Save

January 26, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

wedding budget photo by Grant Daniels Photography

While there are definitely more fun parts of wedding planning (dress shopping! setting up your wedding website!), your wedding budget is one of the most important. We know it can be overwhelming, and even knowing where to start is a challenge. Not to worry — we’ve broken down how to set your wedding budget step by step, and even given a few tips for saving money on the big day!

these-ikea-engagement-photos-are-as-sweet-as-they-are-unique-6-600x400 photo by Savannah Lauren Photography

Setting Your Wedding Budget

Step One: Discuss your priorities. Before you start throwing out numbers, it’s important to determine what’s most important to you both on your wedding day. Different priorities have different price tags attached, but we’ll get to that in a minute. This first meeting should be realistic with a dose of idealistic — what do you envision for your dream wedding day? We recommend finding real weddings that you love and starting a list of the things you love and can’t live without. Based on these priorities, come up with an initial budget draft using our Wedding Budget Tool focusing on the most important things to you. It’s also a good idea to consider your wedding size, as this can make a big difference in your wedding budget as well. Lastly, keep in mind that a longer engagement gives you more time to make payments before the big day! Your initial budget will likely change quite a bit as you go, but it’s good to have a starting place before reaching out to wedding vendors. Which, brings us to…

Step Two: Start meeting with vendors. Once you’ve decided on your priorities, it’s time to start contacting the vendors who can bring them to life! As you collect quotes from each vendor and vendor type (which you can also track in our Wedding Budget Tool!), you can begin to adjust your initial budget. If you really connect with a certain photographer or fall in love with a particular venue that costs more than you budgeted, revise the price points for other areas of your day so that you stay under (or as close as possible) to your initial budget number.

Step Three: If necessary, consult with family. Family members often offer to “help out” with the wedding cost in the early stages of an engagement, but the offer may be vague or in passing. If there is a specific aspect of your wedding where outside funds would make a difference, follow up on those offers. However, do not expect that family is going to pay for all, some, or even a little bit of your wedding without having a conversation about it first!

Step Four: Start a miscellaneous fund. One thing most couples don’t fully expect when setting their wedding budget is the unexpected! Without a doubt, there will be unseen expenses along the way, and especially as the day draws closer. For instance, an AirBnB to get ready in before your wedding, gifts for your bridesmaids and groomsmen, second envelopes for your wedding invitations, or a gorgeous hairpiece you can’t stop thinking about. And don’t forget to tip your vendors! Whether you keep a change jar or sign up for a program like Digit that saves your spare change, starting a miscellaneous fund as early in the planning process as possible provides that extra bit of financial padding for unseen budget needs!

Ways to Save

Get married on a weekday. With only so many Saturdays in the year, many wedding vendors are eager to book weddings on alternative days of the week and are often willing to offer a significant discount if you do so! Not only do venues provide lower rates for weekdays than weekends, but your local photographers, planners, and other vendors may give a sweet incentive to show their appreciation for the opportunity to work with a great couple on a day they aren’t already booked.

Throw a stock the bar party. Alcohol can be a bit of a budget suck, and a cash bar can be a bit of a bummer for guests. Planning an engagement party? Invite guests to bring a bottles of liquor, wine, or beer to have served at your big day in lieu of a regular engagement gift. While you still need to find a licensed bartender who has insurance (serving your own liquor is a big no no!), providing the liquor yourselves can save a lot of money.

Rely on your setting. Whether you prioritized a beautiful venue into your budget or found a charming area in the woods to say “I do,” your setting can do a lot to enhance the look of your wedding. If your budget is tight, let the surroundings speak for themselves and go for a more minimal tablescape of found items.

Skip the favors, skip the paper. When it comes to aspects of a traditional wedding you can skimp on, consider what your guests really want. For most, the experience and photos to look back on are the most important things, making favors and paper menus or programs extraneous. Instead of paying to print a program and menu for every guest, utilize signs in your decor that get this information across. Hiring a calligrapher for one sign is much less of an undertaking than for every invitation envelope. Got a bridesmaid with fabulous handwriting? Even better!

A catered buffet is the way. When it comes to catering, a plated dinner can add up to a huge bill. Going buffet style used to have negative connotations, but these days wedding guests are happy to grab a plate to get fed (and even get seconds!). A catered buffet saves you a considerable amount of money per guest and even gives your favorite people a chance to mingle before hitting the dance floor.

Ditch the Plan B. This may be the most controversial of our tips, but hear us out! If you’re planning an outdoor affair, you may be encouraged to pay for a backup space in the event of rain. An additional venue charge eats up a lot of your budget that could go to other things on your priority list. While weather may be unpredictable, checking the Old Farmer’s Almanac can be a good way to take a look into the future and get an idea of conditions on and around your wedding day. Plus, we think rain is pretty darn beautiful. Just look at these gorgeous rainy wedding days: this Castleton Farms wedding, this Handsome Hollow wedding, and this Stones & Flowers Retreat wedding.

This Historical Maine Wedding Was a Love Letter to Vintage Style, Family Heritage, and Thoughtful Curation

January 13, 2025 | marissa

couple has european-style ceremony exit

Arissa and Bobby’s love story is full of serendipity, beginning in the same hospital in Portland, Maine, where they were both born. “It only made sense to have our wedding in the state where we were both born and raised.” Their journey started in high school through choir, though they weren’t high school sweethearts. After years of friendship, they began dating when Arissa graduated. “I was college-bound and academically driven above all else,” she recalls, while Bobby admired her dedication, adding, “I was too in love with her to break things off just because we would be long-distance.”

The couple endured years of long-distance during college, living together through Covid, and eventually settling in Boston. “Getting married wasn’t a given for us, but a happy mutual decision that further solidified our choice to spend the rest of our lives together.” A year before their wedding, they eloped to simplify things, allowing them to relax and save for their dream celebration with family and friends.

As a self-proclaimed type-A planner, Arissa had a clear vision for the wedding, with Bobby fully supporting her. “He knows that I am in my element when it comes to planning, details, and aesthetics…and allowed me the space to create that I craved.” Take a look at Arissa’s actual wedding Pinterest board—we’re blown away by her vision, to be honest. The couple also hired Toni of 631 Events, their day-of coordinator, to handle the logistics. “If anyone could be my trusted body double on my wedding day, it’s her.”

With a focus on sustainability and supporting local businesses, the couple carefully curated a celebration that honored their love, their roots, and their values. Keep reading to see how Arissa and Bobby brought their dream day to life, with insights you can apply to your own big day. Their wedding journey unfolds through the lens of Junebug vendor Antoinette Photography.

A Personalized Chinese Tea Ceremony

Arissa and Bobby’s wedding was not just about the big celebration—it was also about blending cultures and honoring traditions. They held a Chinese tea ceremony, a meaningful ritual in Chinese weddings that unites families. “We had a Chinese tea ceremony (not super traditional and adjusted for our needs).”

Their custom-made wedding outfits, which Bobby’s family brought from China, featured a phoenix and dragon, symbols of balance, love, and prosperity. Red, a lucky color in Chinese culture, was prominently featured in the outfits, décor, and even the guests’ attire.

During the tea ceremony, the groom’s family was served first, followed by the bride’s family. “The family members gave us well wishes as they drank the tea and wished for a happy marriage, long life, and lots of babies (because a growing family is a positive thing),” Arissa shares.

While Bobby’s grandfather has passed, it was a heartwarming moment when his grandmother and mother received their tea. “I’m also so happy that even before we were married, I’ve been referred to by his family as his ‘wife’ and have been considered a part of the family for many years,” she adds.

One of the most unique aspects of Arissa and Bobby’s story was their decision to merge their last names into a brand new one. The combined surname not only held deep personal meaning but also honored Bobby’s Chinese heritage by creating a name that could seamlessly fit within Chinese culture.

Rather than leaving the name change process to just one partner, they tackled it together—visiting the social security office, DMV, and bank side-by-side. What could have been a tedious task for one became a shared adventure, perfectly reflecting the partnership and equity that define their relationship.

A Dream Vintage Bride

As a vintage lover with a closet that’s about 85% vintage, Arissa knew a vintage wedding dress and accessories would be the perfect choice for her. However, finding a midsize vintage gown proved to be a challenge. After struggling to find a boutique that offered vintage options in her size, she discovered Coastal Bridal Boutique on Cape Cod, where the owner, Jessica, assured her that her dream dress was possible.

The ‘80s gown, featuring bold ruffles and a dramatic train, was carefully altered with ribbing, side panels, and removable puff sleeves, staying true to its vintage style while fitting Arissa beautifully.

Arissa wearing the veil from their elopement–a layered, satin-trimmed 80s veil with a pearl-covered comb–added an extra layer of meaning to the ceremony. “It felt like a lucky charm of confidence for our wedding celebration.”

“The shoes! I love John Fluevog shoes and how funky and unique they are,” Arissa shared. “Owning several pairs, I knew I wanted my wedding shoes to be made by them. I bought the last pair available in my size! Then I topped them off with vintage shoe clips that matched the organza and pearl details in my veil and dress.”

A Western Ceremony With Unforgettable Vows

The ceremony was a heartfelt and intimate affair, with a few unexpected moments that made it even more special. One of the most heartfelt moments of the day came during the couple’s vows, which turned out to be beautifully unexpected. Arissa shared how her husband, who’s typically more introverted, had told her before the wedding that he’d written his own personal vows, surprising her since they originally planned to use a pre-written draft.  “It was another moment that made me wish I could marry him all over again.”

When it was time to read his surprise vows, Bobby admitted he’d forgotten to print them in the chaos of the wedding week. “He then proceeded to recite the most beautiful and sweet vows I have ever heard from memory and from instinct, all the while holding my hand as I smiled at him, never breaking eye contact.”

Inspired, Arissa decided to abandon her hastily written vows and spoke from the heart as well, creating an intimate and spontaneous exchange that had their guests laughing and tearing up. It was a perfectly imperfect moment that reflected their deep connection and love.

The couple opted for a “European-style” exit, with rose petals thrown by guests. “This was our photographer’s idea and one of the best choices for the wedding. Guests could get involved, we got amazing photos of the action, and it allowed strategic time for chairs to be put away and for the backstage prep for the reception to start since everyone was outside.”

The Reception and Couple Portraits

To save money, Arissa thrifted 90% of the decor, including trays, candlesticks, and plates. “I saved untold amounts of money by thrifting 90% of the decor—trays, candlesticks, ribbon, plates, and more,” she shares. With the venue’s character already in place, Arissa opted for a simpler approach. “I simply did not see the need to spend thousands of dollars on greenery or installations.” The vintage-inspired details fit perfectly with the venue, creating a seamless aesthetic.

A special and sustainable detail at Arissa and Bobby’s wedding was the use of dried flower petals as table decorations. Inspired by a TikTok she had seen, Arissa decided to save and dry all the petals from the flowers Bobby had brought home for her. “After about 14 months, I had over 4 gallons of dried petals,” she recalls. Despite telling Bobby that she didn’t need any more dried roses, he continued to surprise her with more, even going so far as to pull wilting stems to hang up and dry. “He was so committed to the idea of using the dried petals for the wedding. It was a small but sweet gesture that made me appreciate him even more.”

The couple decided to allocate much of their budget toward a delayed honeymoon to Japan. “Rather than spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a wedding that only lasts a day, we would rather spend that money on a delayed honeymoon trip to Japan, somewhere we have both wanted to visit since before we started dating. Money was rather spent wisely for our special day. Our biggest area of the budget was photography. And words cannot explain how incredibly worth it it was.”

vintage-inspired wedding cake

Reflecting on their approach to the wedding, “We wouldn’t change a thing about it. Do what feels right for you. For us, having an elopement just for us, a mini honeymoon, a family holiday celebration in 2023, and a ‘proper’ wedding ceremony a year later was the perfect way to stretch our budget and enjoy the time and celebrations we needed.”

“Already being husband and wife, I didn’t feel for a second that our ‘wedding’ with our friends and family was any less special.” Celebrating their anniversary with loved ones only deepened the experience. Ultimately, their wedding was a celebration of their shared journey, reminding them that the most important thing is cherishing each other’s company, no matter the occasion.

How to Have Your Wedding Ceremony and Reception in the Same Room

December 16, 2024 | justine

Keep reading for expert advice from Junebug vendors on making the most of hosting your wedding ceremony and reception in the same space. Image by Elizabeth Salazar.

Hosting your wedding ceremony and reception in the same room can be a game-changer. Whether it’s for convenience, cost savings, or a creative twist on tradition, this option offers plenty of benefits. Guests have just one place to navigate, your timeline can flow more smoothly, and you might save on decor by repurposing elements. As with any decision, planning is required to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Here’s how to make the most of your shared space while avoiding common pitfalls with expert advice from Junebug vendors who’ve seen it all.

How to Have Your Wedding Ceremony and Reception in the Same Room

Setting The Scene

The design and layout of your venue play a huge role in making a shared space feel intentional. You’ll want a setup that transitions effortlessly from ceremony to reception.

“Hosting both ceremony and reception in the same space can make weddings more cost-effective for couples. It’s also a lot simpler to use the same decor from the ceremony to the reception, which can save money as well,” says Michigan-based photographer Catie Eovaldi.

Consider multipurpose décor like floral arrangements that can move from the aisle to the tables or an arch that doubles as a backdrop for your sweetheart table.

Preparing for the Ceremony

Start by creating a ceremony setup that feels intimate and beautiful, keeping in mind how the space will transform later.

A first look with your partner is highly recommended. According to New Jersey photographers, The Markows, “Definitely plan to do a first look! This way, you can get all of your photos done and enjoy cocktail hour. This gives you the chance to get all the group photos you want and allow your photographer enough time to come up with the unique portrait ideas you deserve.”

This simplifies your timeline and allows you to focus on your guests during cocktail hour while the space is being flipped.

Check out this stunning warehouse wedding to see how they transformed their ceremony setup—featuring acrylic chairs, a petal-lined aisle, and statement florals on geometric gold stands—into a modern, ethereal reception. A perfect showcase of flipping a space in style, all beautifully captured by Ash Gabes Photography.

Transforming for the Reception

Transforming your ceremony into a reception space requires coordination and timing, and having a solid plan is crucial.

“A planner or coordinator is invaluable when you are flipping a space. This is a great moment for a cocktail hour or entertainment for your guests. Think of it as an opportunity to be creative and offer your guests a unique experience!” Milly of The Rose Reflective suggests.

Cocktail hours or designated areas for mingling keep guests entertained and out of the way while vendors handle the transition. Without this, “you run the risk of your guests wandering around the area and potentially getting lost or hanging out in a bar/restaurant and filling up before dinner,” adds Catie.

This chic wedding was effortlessly transformed from a modern, ethereal ceremony to a minimalist chic reception. Check out all the stunning details, beautifully captured by Kapsule Co.

Timing the Day Right

A streamlined timeline is essential for keeping everything on track. With the proper preparation, you can avoid downtime or rushed transitions.

The Markows emphasize the importance of timing for photos: “Avoid cramming all of your photos into cocktail hour and avoid planning a day where your family and friends can’t enjoy the majority of cocktail hour.”

Schedule portraits to maximize the time between the ceremony and reception, taking advantage of the natural break while guests enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

Coordinating the Team

Flipping a space takes a team effort, so be sure to communicate with your vendors well in advance. Everyone, from florists to photographers, must know the plan to ensure a smooth transition.

“Have a designated team with a plan in place on how both spaces will be set up. This will ensure a smooth transition on the vendor side,” advises Catie.

This floral-filled celebration showcases the transformation of a raw space into a romantic ceremony with overhead blooms, a floral-lined aisle, and a statement backdrop, then repurposes it for the reception with lush tablescapes and taper candles. Savanna Sturkie perfectly captured every stunning detail for inspiration.

Things to Keep in Mind

While combining your ceremony and reception in the same room has its perks, it’s not without challenges.

“There are stricter time constraints on vendors to create your reception space, so you may be able to do less than if you are hosting your reception in a different space,” notes Milly.

And if a religious ceremony or avoiding a first look is a priority, The Markows suggest reconsidering: “Really, the only disadvantages are if you prefer a religious ceremony at a place of worship or you adamantly are against a first look.”

The experts agree: the key to making it work lies in having a solid plan, an experienced team, and  a venue that ticks all the right boxes—one that’s versatile, convenient, and perfect for your vision. Not only will you create a cohesive experience for your guests, but you’ll also enjoy the benefits of simplicity, cost savings, and a day that flows effortlessly. With the right foundation in place, you’ll be well on your way to creating a celebration that’s as stress-free as it is unforgettable.

This disco ball-filled wedding featured a space transformed with floral pillars, colorful candles, and antique holders for the ceremony, then flipped for the reception with metallic streamers for a playful touch. See all the amazing details, captured by Elizabeth Salazar.
