Overwhelmingly Lush Michigan Wedding at the Planterra Conservatory

November 30, 2016 | gabby

The lush greenery and luxurious details in this Planterra Conservatory wedding makes it one of the most fabulous greenhouse affairs we’ve seen! Jenny and Jason planned their Michigan wedding all the way from New York City, so they were happy to put their trust in their venue to organize and host the wedding of their dreams. Jenny wore a classic Sottero & Midgley gown for the ceremony, then got to show off her fiery personality in a show-stopping bright red ballgown for her reception! We can’t get enough of the perfectly romantic shots Dan Stewart Photography captured of Jenny and Jason’s day, including their incredibly emotional ceremony.

The Couple:

Jenny and Jason

The Wedding:

Planterra Conservatory, West Bloomfield, Michigan

We wanted the day to be fun for us and our guests. It was important to get all the little details right, of course, but more than that we wanted everyone to feel welcome and included. Most of our guests traveled from far away for our wedding, so we were just so grateful they were willing and able to make the trip to Michigan. We wanted to make it worth their while!

Our venue is extremely unique in that it’s a conservatory, which means you can feel like you’re both inside and outside at the same time. We both love nature, and loved that it was full of plants and flowers. The place is absolutely beautiful and the team there paid attention to every little detail. In addition, Planterra is a full-service venue, which means they were able to take care of the flowers, food, lighting, etc. for both the ceremony and the reception, and had infrastructure in place for everything else. That made planning from NYC so much easier!

Our officiant wrote a great personalized ceremony for us, including telling the story of how we met and how we got engaged. We also wrote our own vows.

overwhelmingly-lush-michigan-wedding-at-the-planterra-conservatory-30

overwhelmingly-lush-michigan-wedding-at-the-planterra-conservatory-31

Walking down the aisle and seeing all the people who came, feeling so blessed to have such great family and friends, and reading our vows to each other for the first time were all memorable moments.

Our advice: Know that your vendors are experts at what they do, and trust in their good judgement. We planned our Michigan wedding from New York, so had to let go of wanting to control every little detail. Our team at Planterra was fantastic, and we couldn’t be happier with our photographer, videographer, makeup artists, cake…you name it! Do your due diligence when choosing who to go with, but after that, learn to let go. Our vendors all had way more experience with weddings than we did, and fully knew exactly what they were doing. Choosing good vendors really saved us so much stress and hassle.

Choosing our photographer was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding. We asked Dan and his team to travel 4+ hours from Traverse City to West Bloomfield because we felt so strongly about his work that we had to have him shoot our wedding! On the day-of, he and Luke were on-time (early, in fact), professional, unobstrusive, and were so great at putting everyone at ease. And of course we loved the photos. They captured all the important details.

Partially Iced and Naked Cakes

What these cakes lack in icing, they sure make up for in flowers! A beautiful wedding cake doesn’t have to mean layers of frosting or fondant. Especially for forest, rustic, and whimsical weddings, a naked or partially-iced cake fits the nontraditional atmosphere while fresh flowers add a natural flair!

Friends and Family – What to Delegate When Your Loved Ones Offer to Help with Wedding Planning

July 27, 2016 | nicole

friends and family wedding planning photo by Lev Kuperman Photography

These days, weddings are a labor of love that come together with the help of a whole community. In addition to your talented photographer and videographer, attentive coordinator and skillful florist, caterer, and makeup artist, there’s another team of people who make your dream wedding a reality. The people who’ve been by your side long before you said “yes” to the dress or even “yes” to the proposal. The same people who asked “when are you getting engaged?” and “when are you setting a date?” are now asking “how can I help?”

Answering that question can be as overwhelming as wedding planning itself. Where do you even start? We know that delegating tasks can be a doozy, so we’re here to break down what to assign your loved ones, and what to leave to the pros.

Your mother-in-law who loves baking

Johnny-June-Inspired-Wedding-Melt-Your-Heart-Dan-Stewart-Photography-27-600x400-600x400 photo by Dan Stewart Photography

She’s known for baking the most delectable cakes for each and every family member’s birthday, but you may not feel comfortable having her build your six-tier wedding cake. Instead, give her control of the dessert table. Allowing her to plan the array of treats accompanying your cake is a sweet substitute that takes one more thing off of your plate, while giving her a chance to shine. Homemade pies and cupcakes are most delicious when baked with love!

Your crafty & creative bridesmaid

sidneymorgan-135 photo by Sidney Morgan

With so many DIY ideas on the Internet, Pinterest can be an endless rabbit hole of inspiration. Before you get sucked into the crafty madness, take your bridesmaid up on her offer to help. Having her make a shared Pinterest board for ideas allows you to simply scroll through a streamlined selection of projects to decide what’s right for your wedding. Once you’ve determined what to DIY and what to outsource to a professional, have your bridesmaid create a spreadsheet of each project, the materials needed, and a priority timeline. If you’ve got lots of idle hands to help, have her assign different crafts to trusted friends and family members.

Your mom’s friend who owns a really nice camera

Elegantly-Whimsical-Ojai-Valley-Wedding-Jenn-Sanchez-Floral-Design-37-600x400 photo by Wildhagen Photography

We can’t advocate enough for hiring a professional wedding photographer to capture your big day. It seems like everyone knows someone who’s tried their hand at photography — and may even be quite skilled — but that doesn’t mean they should be put in charge of documenting one of the most important days of your life. Instead of hiring your mom’s friend to take on your whole wedding or even your engagement photos, enlist their help for one of the smaller events leading up to the big day. Your engagement party, bridal shower, or rehearsal dinner are the perfect, low-pressure settings for a family friend to photograph.

Your handyman father

Gorgeous-Wedding-at-the-Orcutt-Ranch-Horticulture-Center-Emily-Magers-Photography-7318-600x900-600x900 photo by Emily Magers Photography

We know your dad would build you the venue of your dreams if it would make you happy, but perhaps a handcrafted sweetheart table or ceremony arch would do the trick. Fathers can often feel left out of the wedding planning process, so letting him build you something with his own hands helps him feel needed and included in your special day. Some of our favorite farm tables and cake stands have been thoughtfully crafted by a bride’s father, and you’ll appreciate those one-of-a-kind pieces long after you’ve said “I do.”

Your detail-oriented aunt

Neverland-Inspired-Wedding-at-Cedarwood-Weddings-25-of-39-600x900 photo by The Schultzes

Unless your aunt is a professional wedding planner by trade, it may not be the best idea to give her free reign on coordinating your big day. However, that doesn’t mean her attention to detail and stellar organizational skills have to go unused! Making her the point of contact for your hired planner or day-of coordinator ensures that no questions will come to you as you prepare to say your vows or enjoy your first dance. Entrust her with a binder full of every vendor and wedding party member’s contact information, and maybe even cc her on your email communications throughout the planning process to keep her in the loop.

It’s true what they say: it really does take a village to pull a picture-perfect wedding together! Thinking of hiring a wedding planner? Read this first!

How to Nail Your Vintage Bridal Style

July 19, 2016 | nicole

vintage bridal style

Of all the wedding fashion trends for 2016, we have to say that vintage bridal style is at the top of our list. A special kind of bride is attracted to the romantic quality and sense of nostalgia associated with vintage styling. We’re endlessly impressed with the sartorial choices of Junebug brides, who always manage to get the vintage wedding look just right. With the help of some of our favorites, we present how to nail your vintage bridal style!

The Dress

The first, most fun, and possibly most difficult step of achieving your vintage bridal style is selecting a gown to set the tone of your ensemble. Every addition to your look will be defined by the details, silhouette, and style of your wedding gown, so choose wisely!

Glamorous Beading

For an Old Hollywood or Great Gatsby-inspired look, choose a gown with intricate beading. Bridal designers like Anna Campbell and Jenny Packham are known for crafting gowns with exquisite beaded designs that wow.

Lace Long Sleeves

Popularized by Kate Middleton’s 2011 Alexander McQueen wedding gown, lace long sleeves provide a sense of vintage modesty and demure romance. While top designers like Temperley London are synonymous with the trend, wedding dresses with long lace sleeves can be found in nearly any bridal collection for a variety of price points.

Off-the-Shoulder

Is there a more romantic silhouette than the off-the-shoulder dress? The balance of baring your shoulders while covering a hint of skin is reminiscent of an old school bride’s subtle defiance of modesty. Delicate fabrics like tulle, lace, and satin hung gently across the top of your arms makes for an etheral vintage look.

Accessories

A gown is just the beginning when it comes to crafting your bridal look. Brides with unforgettable style carefully curate an outfit that complements their wedding design from head to toe. Accessories, though small, can have a big impact on your overall vintage affect.

Shoes

Whether your pair is actually-vintage or retro-inspired, the peep of shoes beneath your dress can make a major statement in your bridal style. Luckily, vintage styles can be found nearly everywhere right now, from bridal-specific shops like BHLDN to your everyday favorite spots like ASOS.

Veils and Hairpieces

One of the quickest ways to add a touch of vintage to your bridal style is with a veil or hairpiece. From crystal hair combs to birdcage veils, the options are endless! We recommend a sparkly statement for a Roaring Twenties inspired wedding ensemble, a fascinator hat for a retro ’40s inspired affair, and a short and sweet veil clipped into your curls for a celebration reminiscent of the 1960s.

Accessories to Have and to Hold

In addition to what’s on your head, the accessories you have and hold on your wedding day can contribute to the vintage affect of your bridal look. This is a great opportunity to employ your “something old” with a true-vintage pair of gloves or antique clutch. However, your “something new” could also be a vintage-inspired hat or Art Deco earrings!

Bridal Beauty

Now that your gown and accessories are in order, it’s time to style the true star of your bridal look: yourself! Put your best face forward by choosing hair and makeup styles that are consistent with the rest of your ensemble.

Winged Eyeliner

Vintage makeup can be characterized by a few words: classic, playful, romantic, and mysterious. There’s no makeup trend that encompasses these sentiments more than winged eyeliner. Bold or dainty, a flick of eyeliner extending past the lid is always dynamic.

Bold Red Lip

It’s no secret that a bold red lip is synonymous with vintage makeup, but did you know that any bride can rock this look? No matter the decade your wedding is influenced by or the color of your skin, a red lip is classic, flattering, and unbelievably romantic.

Vintage Bridal Hairstyles

With so many variations, we couldn’t choose just one vintage-inspired bridal hairstyle to share. What these ‘dos have in common are soft, voluminous curls, whether pinned high or low, or worn to one side of cascading across your shoulders.

20 Vase Alternatives You Haven’t Considered For Your Wedding Tablescape

July 13, 2016 | gabby

vase alternative feature final

Step aside, candle votives and glass vases – the easiest and most fun way to spice up your wedding tablescape is by using vase alternatives! Between roller skates and coffee cans, these vase alternatives offer tons of personality and are anything but traditional.

1. UPCYCLED MATERIALS

There’s nothing that gets our DIY-loving selves as excited as when we spot upcycled materials used in wedding décor! These weddings use embellished bottles and coffee cans for their reception tablescapes to create a timeless feel. These looks are super easy to create – just save your used veggie cans and wine bottles, strip their labels (or keep them for added color!), and stick some flowers or succulents in them! Cluster bottles and cans of different heights together for added tablescape depth, or try spray painting them for a more uniform feel.

2. PLANTERS AND POTS

Succulents, garden herbs, and wild greenery are definitely having a moment in wedding décor, so it only makes sense that their planters and pots are too! These creative weddings used clusters of terracotta pots and low, wide planters to display their green tablescapes. Accents of copper, clear glass, and white florals add a bit of depth to an otherwise earthy display. To maximize your planter and pot tablescape’s function, have guests take home a small pot of herbs as a wedding favor after the reception!

3. TERRARIUMS

These crystal clear beauties are popping up at more and more weddings, and there’s no wonder why! Terrariums are totally gorgeous, come in every shape and size, and the options of decorating their interiors are limitless. You can choose one large terrarium to be the accent piece of a tablescape, or try a cluster of smaller terrariums to create a dynamic display. For a dreamy, minimalist look, try recreating Transplants Floral‘s coral display by hanging a piece of coral or a gem from fishing line and suspending it from the top of the terrarium to create a floating illusion.

4. UNEXPECTED ITEMS

These weddings went above and beyond the call of duty by selecting totally unexpected items to display their tablescape décor and florals. We can’t get enough of the roller skate vase alternative one wedding chose – it’s the perfect combo of retro and eclectic! To achieve a quirky, playful tablescape, a couple of these weddings displayed succulents and ferns inside small dinosaur figurines. Try a fun and modern spin on a tablescape display by completely forgoing the florals and stuffing a small, antique statue from a craft store with gems and petite greenery details.

5. UNIQUE GLASSWARE

These three weddings take the traditional elements of glass vases and totally turn them upside down! From Erlenmeyer flasks to glass bowls, we can’t get enough of these unique additions to their wedding tablescapes. We love the terrarium-like design in the large glass bowl – the addition of rocks, soil, and quirky figurines create the appearance of a landscape.

6. VINTAGE DISHES AND CHINA

If you’re planning a rustic and romantic wedding reception, vintage dishes and china are the vase alternatives for you! These weddings used vintage china teapots, teacups, and large pitchers in lieu of glass vases to create a dramatic, romantic effect. Large bunches of flowers and greenery work best with these designs as they round out the fullness of the china!

You Got Served: 9 Creative Wedding Drink Stations

July 5, 2016 | gabby

drink station first image

Whether it’s an open bar, a water station, or a fresh juice bar, drink stations are one of the most crucial and anticipated features of a wedding. These nine weddings channeled their creativity with drink station set ups that range from the DIY to the modern and unexpected!

1. A DIY Hand-Lettered Chalkboard Mixed With Vintage Pieces

Oversized metallic tassels, a vintage bar, and a chalkboard commanded a major presence at Laura and Dan’s Ontario wedding! The backdrop featured the couple’s favorite love poem by e. e. cummings, “since feeling is first,” and kept it personal by emblazoning a hand-drawn version of their wedding logo in the middle of the chalkboard. Between the petite floral displays and votive candles, we love the delicate touches that pull this epic drink station’s style together.

2. A Winter-Inspired Drink Station With Burlap, Kraft Paper, and Evergreen Decor

When Kate and Nikita were planning their wedding reception, their family of artists pitched together to create this amazing winter-inspired drink station! With a coffee station on one side and a water station on the other, guests were treated to the ultimate in hydration. Hand-foraged pine, magnolia, and cypress details from a local forest were paired with burlap sacks, Kraft paper, and bright linens to create an unforgettable winter forest celebration.

3. A Quirky Pre-Ceremony Juice Station With Upcycled Bottles

We’ve all heard of a pre-ceremony cocktail hour, but have you considered a creative juice station for guests to enjoy before your ceremony? Joanna and Mitch’s Australian DIY wedding featured the cutest pre-ceremony drink station with orange and cardamom juices. This quirky station was fitted with fresh-squeezed details like striped straws and upcycled milk bottles, and a large crystal juice dispenser added a gorgeous touch of elegance.

4. A DIY Wooden Pallet Bar with Tons of Florals and Copper Accents

If you weren’t already totally charmed by Joanna and Mitch’s upcycled juice station, their DIY wooden pallet bar will knock your socks off! As an exciting twist on one of our favorite DIY trends, this very handy bride and groom fashioned not only the bar out of pallets, but also the bar’s impressive wooden backdrop. To dress it up, they added a handmade cooper hoop and a stunning hand-lettered sign to the front of the bar. Joanna and Mitch then added the final touch of a personalized floral design by attaching fresh flowers to flower foam in the shapes of their initials.

5. A Self-Serve Prosecco Cocktail Bar with Custom Recipe Cards

If you’re looking for a low cost and incredibly stylish alternative to a full open bar, you’ll love this self-serve Prosecco cocktail station! Alanna and Scott’s low-key British Columbian island wedding deserved an equally cool drink experience, so they chose a self-serve format. Custom printed cocktail recipe cards hung from twine on this drink station’s minimalist white wooden backdrop. Guests were delighted by being able to shake and stir their own Prosecco cocktails, and Alanna and Scott were able to sit back and watch the wedding fun unravel!

6. A DIY Reclaimed Wooden Pallet Bar With Greenery and Terrarium Details

There’s nothing more special than getting a family member to contribute to your wedding’s decor, and this enchanting DIY drink station is no exception! The bride’s father reclaimed, stained, and assembled old wooden pallets to create the coolest bar for his daughter’s reception. A wooden armoire backdrop with open shelves transformed the drink station into a multi-dimensional experience. Candle-lit terrariums, greenery garlands, and a classic “Bar” marquee are the cherries on top of this amazing wedding drink station!

7. A 1969 Vintage Scotty Camper Mobile Bar

We can’t get enough of the mobile campers and trailers we’ve been spotting at wedding receptions lately, and this sleek 1969 Vintage Scotty Camper is one of our absolute favorites! Sweet Water Caravan, a mobile bar service based out of Ohio, brings instant vintage glam and sophistication to any outdoor wedding reception. Two real weddings featured on Junebug have used their services, and based on how stylish and accessible this drink station is, we expect to see it many more times to come!

8. A Minimalist Drink Station with Cascading Florals and Steel Canopy

Guests couldn’t stay away from this show-stopping drink station at Samantha and Tony’s gorgeous Haiku Mill wedding, and we don’t blame them! Keeping with the couple’s cool minimalist style, a live edge marble bar sat on top of geometric steel legs and was surrounded by a massive steel beam canopy. As if that wasn’t already a stunning set-up, they took it to the next level with a huge floating garden fixture above the bar with cascading greenery, vines, and crisp white florals. Twinkle lights illuminating the space completed this drink station’s totally dreamy style.

9. A Self-Serve Scotch Bar, A Vintage Heirloom Table, and Plenty of Greenery

This Johnny Cash and June Carter inspired wedding in Michigan featured many nods to Southern hospitality, but this self-serve scotch bar takes the cake. Betsy and David set up their bar with a lush greenery garland, a DIY hand-lettered mirror sign, and classic scotch accoutrements like a crystal decanter and a silver whiskey pitcher. We love the idea of setting up a self-serve bar with the groom’s favorite liquor as a fun, boozy alternative to a groom’s cake that can be enjoyed by all!

With its rustic elegance and personalized elements, Betsy and David pulled off the sweetest Johnny and June inspired wedding. The ceremony, which took place in an open field at Uncle Frank’s Apple Town, included a reading of a love letter from Johnny Cash to June Carter. Betsy’s bridal look even gave a nod to June’s style with a flowing Reem Acra gown and her long brown hair teased in the back and adorned with a delicate crown of jewels. Dan Stewart Photography beautifully captured the swoon-worthy details designed by Smitten Events; our favorite being the killer dessert bar!

The most memorable part of the day was walking back down the aisle, after saying “I do.” We were completely overwhelmed by the smiles and happiness on the faces of our family and friends.
