Quirky Lakefront Savannah, GA Wedding at The Wyld Dock Bar

May 30, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Sophie and Brooks’ wedding at The Wyld Dock Bar combined laid-back, campy vibes with vintage decor for a relaxed waterfront celebration that was as pretty as it was quirky! As a graphic designer and owner of Mod Bird, Sophie was delighted to plan, design, and execute every detail. With the help of family and friends, Sophie DIYed hand-lettered invitations and table pendants, handmade candles and table runners, and antique frames filled with pictures of their families. The design was simple yet eclectic, which fit in seamlessly with the casual vibe of the waterfront venue. We love how Nicole Veldman Photography + Video captured the light-hearted quirkiness of this couple and all the love that went into creating this lovely day!

From the photographer: Brooks and Sophie are easily the most indescribably lovable people out there. Both graduated from Savannah School of Art and Design, I could not wait to photograph their wedding. As you can see, there was so much from this day to document. From their table settings to her engagement ring, every detail was completely catered to their innovative and unique personalities. Brooks has been my friend since 2009, and I was so honored to have been able to capture this day. Brooks and Sophie’s friends and family made the day truly special. From their friends sewing together the boy’s ties to the tear filled speeches, the support around them was so amazing to see and be apart of. Almost every detail of the day was created by one of their friends. It was amazing. Couple’s like the Tompkins remind me what is the most important part of your wedding day, and that is two people choosing each other for every day of forever. That should never be overlooked.

We chose our wedding vibe by identifying things we love. We love our friends, so we wanted them to be as involved as possible. We love the vibe of The Wyld Dock Bar – laid back, campy, eclectic, and their food was so good. We love our families, so we included a styled wall of pictures and mementos from both sides of our families. Sophie loves to do hand lettering, so there was lots of hand lettering. We got engaged on a lake in a canoe, so our wedding gifts (campy enamel mugs) and the cake topper featured the canoe. Sophie and her friends love to thrift, so they searched for months for vintage barware to make into candles and frames to decorate with. Basically, our style is an eclectic mix of things we love and people we love. It’s kinda got a Wes Anderson vibe!

Almost all of the decorations were DIY. All the candles were vintage barware and various colored glass that we found and handmade into candles. We thrifted for cool frames for our picture wall and to turn into hand lettered signs. Sophie‘s hand-lettered invitation design was made into a stamp and all the invites were hand stamped onto brown recycled stock paper. Sophie‘s mom sewed the paper table runners to have a cute zig zag threaded edge. Lots of love went into the decor!

Dinner was a blast! The whole bridal party and their significant others sat alone on the dock. We loved this decision because it gave us a moment in the night to sit with each other and our closest people and have time to laugh, look each other in the eyes, and just soak it up. We also loved the speeches! We felt so loved by the incredible stories and love that our family shared with us.
